The Impact Of Technology, Katina Michael
The Impact Of Technology, Katina Michael

Consumer electronics have revolutionized the way we live and work. Most students that I know would rather forgo expensive clothing labels than do without their branded smartphone. In fact, some of them would forgo food altogether if it meant their phone could be “always on” and “always with them”, clipped onto the belt buckle, strapped into a pants or jacket sleeve or increasingly into the open palm of their hand. Something happens when our basic needs as humans are overtaken by some other need that was once a distant want at best- plainly confusion in our ability to rightly determine …
The Role Of The Design Coach - A Novel Approach To Achieving 360 Collaboration Between Industry And Higher Education, Lee Styger, Ian Ellis
The Role Of The Design Coach - A Novel Approach To Achieving 360 Collaboration Between Industry And Higher Education, Lee Styger, Ian Ellis
Lee Styger
There is significant latent design talent within the broader business community, however, much of the design potential is isolated, and, lacks the necessary focus to manifest positive commercial outcomes. Research has indicated that this situation is due to a myopic design development process that is typically caused by the lack of larger team dynamics, reporting structures, and more formal review and feedback processes. The role of the coach is well established in business environments, where, a specialist practitioner enables an environment that supports personal and operational development. Unfortunately the concept of the design coach is not as well established because, …
The Design Of Teaching Protocols That Develop Creativity, Innovation And Innovative Thinking Within Higher Education Business Schools - A Transfer Of Best Practice From Design And Engineering Education Principles, Lee Styger
Lee Styger
Typically, the construct of innovation within business education has focused around the concept of developing innovative and creative leaders of business. This is particularly so in the higher educational fields and specifically so within the context of the global market positioning of many MBA programs currently. However, in many cases, it would appear that business schools are typically embarking on a journey of curriculum development from the point of the core teaching of business methodologies (i.e. silo thinking), rather than incorporating best practice from other disciplines such as those found in leading design and engineering education, where, for example, applied …
Authentic Assessment And Feedback In A Masters Program, Grace Mccarthy, Julia Ahrens
Authentic Assessment And Feedback In A Masters Program, Grace Mccarthy, Julia Ahrens

This paper will focus on the use of authentic assessment (Meyers and Nulty 2009) in a post-graduate program, examining graduates' perceptions of assessment and feedback. The aim of the research is to identify whether authentic assessments address the students' need for relevance, one of the key principles of adult learning (Knowles et al. 2006). Anonymous post-graduation surveys allow graduates to give us the benefit of their wisdom as practitioners, an important perspective in evaluating the relevance of assessment tasks. Authentic assessments motivate students because they are seen to be relevant to the students' professional lives rather than something that must …

Risk-Based Critical Infrastructure Protection Priorities For Emp And Solar Storms, George H. Baker Iii
Risk-Based Critical Infrastructure Protection Priorities For Emp And Solar Storms, George H. Baker Iii
George H Baker
The Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse Attack has provided a compelling case for protecting civilian infrastructure against the effects of EMP. As with protecting infrastructure against any hazard, it will be important to take a risk-based priority approach for EMP, recognizing that it is fiscally impracticable to protect everything. In this regard, EMP is particularly challenging in that it interferes with electrical and electronic data, control, transmission, and communication systems organic to nearly all infrastructures in a simultaneous and wide-scale manner. And, for nuclear burst altitudes of 100s of kilometers, the exposed geography …
A Framework For Leadership Development, George Hrivnak, Rebecca Reichard, Ronald Riggio
A Framework For Leadership Development, George Hrivnak, Rebecca Reichard, Ronald Riggio
George Hrivnak
Despite the tremendous amount of time, money, and energy spent by practitioners and scholars alike to understand, promote, and facilitate effective leadership development, the field is still far from fully understanding what is often regarded as both art and science. That is not to suggest, however, that the field's efforts have failed to result in substantial progress. Indeed, after defining some salient concepts and the overall scope of this chapter, we review some of the major theoretical and empirical advances in leadership development. Furthermore, the trends and 'best practices' dominant in today's organizations in leadership development are then summarized and …
Business Sustainability And Undergraduate Management Education In Australia, Josie Fisher, Ingrid Bonn
Business Sustainability And Undergraduate Management Education In Australia, Josie Fisher, Ingrid Bonn
Ingrid Bonn
There is a large and rapidly expanding academic literature arguing that there is an urgent requirement for businesses to become more sustainable. There is also a demonstrated need for managers to develop a better understanding of sustainability and the appropriate strategies required to improve business sustainability. In addition, there are international calls for educators to address sustainability in their programs. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which business sustainability is being incorporated into undergraduate business and management courses in Australian universities. The high percentage of international students enrolled in these courses suggests our findings have …
Entrepreneurship Education: Towards A Discipline-Based Framework, Debra Johnson, Justin Craig, Ryan Hildebrand
Entrepreneurship Education: Towards A Discipline-Based Framework, Debra Johnson, Justin Craig, Ryan Hildebrand
Justin B. Craig
Purpose – The purpose of this exploratory research was to investigate whether: entrepreneurship in the higher education context can be distinguished by disciplined-based needs; and curricula can be developed around these needs. Design/methodology/approach – The authors reviewed the literature related to the development of professions in order to establish a sound theoretical base to distinguish disciplines that require stringent criteria, and which potentially would challenge the introduction of a more flexible curriculum that includes contemporary concepts such as entrepreneurship. The research then focused on two other groups of disciplines which lead to entrepreneurial opportunities with distinct needs in (principally) people …
