Do Mlb Hitters Boost Performance In Their Contract Year?, Heather M. O'Neill
Do Mlb Hitters Boost Performance In Their Contract Year?, Heather M. O'Neill
Business and Economics Faculty Publications
This study focuses on 256 MLB free agent hitters playing under the 2006-2011 CBA to determine whether they boost their offensive performance in their contract year. Prior studies’ results are mixed, depending on the econometric technique used and the choice of the offensive performance measure.
Having multiple year observations per player, one can incorporate the unobserved traits of the players (ability, risk aversion, work ethic, etc.) by using Fixed Effects (FE) estimation. Since these unmeasured player traits are likely to be correlated with observed predictors of performance (games played, playoff contention, age, etc.), traditionally used Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and …
Rhody's Run For Dana Farber 5k, Mark Albanese, Bryan Poston
Rhody's Run For Dana Farber 5k, Mark Albanese, Bryan Poston
Senior Honors Projects
The event itself was designed to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. In the early stages of the project, it was clear that a charity event would have the largest impact both on our experiential learning as well as the community as a whole. Dana-Farber was selected as the events beneficiary due to their impressive contributions to cancer research worldwide. While the success of the project isn't solely determined by charitable contributions we collected, it provided a form of measurement of progress throughout the semester. With the goal of simultaneously promoting student health, the event was organized …
Virginia Woolf & Michel Foucault: Methods Of Justice, Elizabeth K. Doré
Virginia Woolf & Michel Foucault: Methods Of Justice, Elizabeth K. Doré
Senior Honors Projects
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is primarily known today as a central British modernist novelist. In addition, she was also an important theorist of power, subjectivity, and ethics, especially as she turned her attention in the 1930s--as fascism spread and intensified across Europe--toward the public sphere in which European women were still then more or less without (easy) access. I read her late novels and essays alongside her diary in order to excavate the theoretical/political/ethical premises of her thought. I contend that she shares with the late thought of French philosopher Michel Foucault (1926-1984) an original conception of ethics. Woolf and Foucault’s …
Accessing International Markets: How Professional Service Firms Internationalise, Deirdre Mcquillan, Pamela Sharkey Scott, Vincent Mangematin
Accessing International Markets: How Professional Service Firms Internationalise, Deirdre Mcquillan, Pamela Sharkey Scott, Vincent Mangematin
Conference papers
Professional service firms (“PSFs”) increasingly rely on internationalisation to drive their growth strategy. Their professional reputation and networks of relationships are critical due to the high knowledge complexity of their services. Yet international business process theory, while identifying learning as the critical tool for addressing foreign market risk, provides little insight into how PSFs build relationships and reputation for internationalisation. Our qualitative multiple case research study of the PSF internationalisation process identifies phases of interplay between learning, relationship and reputation building. These findings extend international business process theory by revealing the role of reputation and relationship building during the internationalisation …

Patron-Driven Acquisition Optimization At Liberty University, Erin Crane, Lori Snyder
Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 2010 Liberty University began a Patron-Driven Acquisition pilot program with ebrary. Since then, the program has grown dramatically. The presenters describe how the library uses past usage data to create a predictive formula for ebook use. New ebook titles were added to the program based on formula selections. Success of the formula was evaluated, and overall the results are positive. The presenters also explain how the library handles the purchasing and cataloging of the ebooks.
