Numerous studies in the hospitality field have focused on the importance of the convention industry to the economic well being of the local tourism industry. Because of intense competition between convention centers, destinations are practicing strategies of expanding their convention facilities and related infrastructure. Unfortunately, many of these expansions appear to have been based on feasibility studies that failed to present rigorous reviews and examinations regarding alleged claims of positive impacts and over-optimistic operational pro-forma statements. Harrison Price Company (HPC) isolated factors which appear to have contributed to the success of the River Walk as well as factors that delayed success. HPC conducted a search of historical literature on key development events relating to the San Antonio River Walk. The 30-year period covered was 1962 through 1994. This report served as a conceptual rendering of a Waikiki convention center in response to Waikiki people's concerns of a proposal to construct an immense convention center in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii. Sponsored by The Queen Emma Foundation, the concept outlined in this report was offered as a potential alternative, a possible compromise with a different location, different combination of uses, with more for the community, and a different and practical financing mechanism.
