At the request of the City of Phoenix, the Harrison Price Company (HPC) evaluated the proposal to develop a commercial aquarium attraction known as Undersea World in downtown Phoenix. The Stanford Research Institute (SRI) evaluated a feasibility study conducted by MCA Recreation Service of a proposed Universal Studios attraction in Orlando, Florida. In their report, SRI employed its attendance and financial models using information on tourism constraints, energy outlook and its impact, and other attendance-related data to generate the possible profitability and financial risks of Universal Studios proposed attraction. Until the late 1960's, the Red River Gorge was just one of the more beautiful parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest. At this time, the Army Corps of Engineers proposed to dam the river for flood control, water supply, and recreation purposes. Intense opposition to the project generated considerable publicity and the Gorge area experienced substantial increases in visitation. The result has been not only severe environmental degradation but extensive overcrowding as well. These trends are presently overtaxing management capabilities of the United States Forest Service. Algemeen Burgerlijk Pensioenfonds (ABP) in Heerlen, The Netherlands retained the Harrison Price Company (HPC) to evaluate acquisition and development options at the Beekse Bergen park of Tilburg in Brabant. At the time Beekse Bergen was owned jointly by the cities of Tilburg (15/16th ownership), and was acquirable due to the cities’ apparent reluctance to fund operating losses, which the park had sustained in recent years. The four quarter ahead forecasts of out-of-state domestic visitor arrivals for the third quarter of 1983 through the second quarter of 1984 are presented in the graph below and also in the table on the following page. Although official first quarter air and auto arrivals, as well as second quarter air and auto arrivals are not yet available, preliminary figures generated by the BAROMETER suggest that total out-of-state arrivals for the first half of 1983 were approximately 10 percent ahead of 1982.

In 1980, prior to the completion of EPCOT, a major study was conducted to measure potential interest in visiting both, Universal Studios Tour in Orlando and EPCOT, and how these parks would impact existing attractions. The 1980 study was conducted over several months amongst 1,021 overnight visitors to Orlando, and utilized verbal descriptions and audio tapes to describe both the Universal concept and that of EPCOT. The results of the 1980 study indicated extremely high interest in both Universal and EPCOT, and strong opportunity for both attractions. The four-quarter ahead forecasts of out-of-state domestic visitor arrivals for the second quarter of 1983 through the first quarter of 1984 are presented in the graph below and also in the Table on the following page.
