Three Essays On Climate Finance And Machine Learning In Financial Studies, Huan Kuang

This dissertation focuses on climate finance and explore how to incorporate machine learning techniques into financial research. In the first chapter, we focus on climate innovation. Through a novel design to link climate risk and the U.S. firm patents related to climate change mitigation technologies (CCMTs), we find that CCMT innovations generate significant economic value. These innovations are effective in mitigating firms’ carbon risk. We also find that adoption of a new patent classification scheme has promoted more CCMT innovations in the United States. However, we find mixed evidence on firms’ carbon risk and their CCMT innovation activities. Our work …

My dissertation explores how and why firms facing the same exogenous threats react differently, leading to different business model innovation (BMI) processes. I examine BMI in a context that has been hard-hit by COVID-19 pandemic restrictions—the restaurant industry. Employing a mixed-method research design, I conducted a longitudinal, inductive comparative case study of 17 restaurateurs in the same geographic region to explore how they have responded to the pandemic and how their BMI unfolded over time. This dissertation explores emerging innovation phenomena in two domains: pipeline and platform innovation domains, which are distinguishable because innovations are very much different under them. This study uses the Computers Are Social Actors (CASA) and domestication theories as the underlying framework of an acceptance model of retail service robots (RSRs). The model illustrates the relationships among facilitators, attitudes toward Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), anxiety toward robots, anticipated service quality, and the acceptance of RSRs. Specifically, the researcher investigates the extent to which the facilitators of usefulness, social capability, the appearance of RSRs, and the attitudes toward HRI affect acceptance and increase the anticipation of service quality. The purpose of this study was to investigate how training and professional development effected university-level instructors’ perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, behavioral intent to use, perception of self-efficacy, and frequency of use of audio-, video-, and speech-to-text-recognition-based technologies associated with the feedback and assessment process in college-level teaching. Innovation Outside Firm Boundaries: A Real Options Perspective On Appropriability, Commercialization Strategies And Firm Performance, Mary Beth Rousseau

This dissertation focuses on the conditions under which innovating firms may employ external commercialization strategies to appropriate value from their innovations and enhance firm performance. Specifically I examine the relationship between appropriability conditions of intellectual property protection, complementary assets and uncertainty, and the firm’s decision to commercialize innovations externally. Applying real options theory to a firm’s innovation strategy, I hypothesize that external commercialization strategies mediate the effect of appropriability conditions on firm performance. Hypotheses tests are conducted on a sample of more than 1600 firms and 300 external commercialization agreements in the manufacturing sector. Notwithstanding the overall lack of support …

This exploratory study identified generational preferences for receiving information from management through different communication channels and determined if age predicted productivity for productive and unproductive information received through different communication channels. This is the first study to empirically examine the relationship between age cohorts, communication channel preferences, information categories, and productivity. Sample participants worked as Extension agents at a major land-grant university. The four generations represented in the sample utilized multiple communication channels and were geographically dispersed throughout the state. The survey was administered electronically and completed by 204 (74%) of the eligible 275 employees in the organization. Independent Samples …
