Perceived Context Typicality And Beliefs In The Generalizability Of Management Research Findings, Przemyslaw Hensel, Adam Tatarynowicz
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Despite growing calls for a greater internationalization of management research, the discipline still struggles with the challenge of integrating diverse national contexts. While recent decades have seen a change toward a more equitable treatment of all national contexts, the belief that research conducted outside the United States is less generalizable remains strong. In this research note, we explore the general perceptions of what is considered a “typical” study context by associating them with authors' variable tendencies to report threats to external validity. Using a sample of 400 papers from seven top-tier management journals, we find that research based on non-US …

A Tale Of Two Signals: Partner Csr Versus Csi And Alliance Formation, Qiwen Yu, Ilya R. P. Cuypers, Heli Wang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study outlines two signaling mechanisms—trust and spillover—through which a potential partner’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate social irresponsibility (CSI) affect alliance formation. Extending a key insight in signaling theory that positive and negative signals are conceptually distinct, we propose that which mechanism is dominant in explaining alliance formation varies between CSR and CSI. Specifically, we argue that the dominant signaling mechanism for CSR is the trust mechanism, through which CSR signals the moral character of a potential partner, which is used by the focal firm to infer the partner’s trustworthiness. In contrast, CSI negatively affects alliance formation primarily …

The COVID-19 pandemic provided an opportunity for management scholars to address large-scale and complex societal problems and strive for greater practical and policy impact. A brief overview of the most-cited work on COVID-19 reveals that, compared with their counterparts in other disciplines, leading management journals and professional associations lagged in providing a platform for high-impact research on COVID-19. To help management research play a more active role in responding to similar global challenges in the future, we propose an integrative framework that emphasizes a phenomenon’s impact, the conditions that the phenomenon creates at multiple levels, and the responses of actors …

In June 2008, the U.S.-based website Glassdoor.com began posting anonymous company reviews and salary data from current and former employees of various organizations. Doing so not only brought to the world information that had hitherto been restricted to private circles, it spontaneously prompted some organizations to alter their workplace practices (Dineen & Allen, 2016; Dube & Zhu, 2021). At the same time, Glassdoor’s very activities gave rise to a completely new source of data for exploring a wealth of management and organizational phenomena (e.g., Bermiss & McDonald, 2018; Rhee, 2024). As this example illustrates, new data sources can not only …

The Dance Of Longevity: Rhythms Of Maturity In Mnes Subsidiary Management, Mehdi Rasouli Ghahroudi, Sundar Balakrishnan
Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Proceedings 2024
We investigate the factors influencing the sustainability of subsidiaries and their effective management in host countries over the long term. We explore the impact of subsidiary mandates on longstanding subsidiaries in comparison to younger counterparts, validating our hypotheses through the analysis of data from 1,463 Japanese subsidiaries operating in 26 developing and developed countries. Our findings reveal that efficiency and strategic asset-seeking subsidiaries are more likely to maintain longer operations in the host market. Additionally, we contribute to the literature by applying the resource-based view and institutional theory to promote the longevity of subsidiaries. Our results underscore the necessity of …

Networking Fast And Slow: The Role Of Speed In Tie Formation, Julia Brennecke, Gokhan Ertug, Tom Elfring
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Growing interest in network dynamics has led to insights about patterns of network change, drivers of tie formation, and the temporal unfolding of the consequences of networks. To this area of inquiry, we introduce networking speed – the time it takes for individuals to form a network tie – as an important but so far largely overlooked aspect. We develop a theory of networking speed that explains how different catalysts enable professionals to introduce variation into the speed with which they form interpersonal network ties. We discuss how such variation in the speed with which ties have been formed influences …

The Status Of Status Research: A Review Of The Types, Functions, Levels And Audiences, Matteo Prato, Gokhan Ertug, Fabrizio Castellucci, Tengjian Zou
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Our review of 154 articles published over the last decade portrays an evolution of status research. This body of literature has transitioned from viewing status as a monolithic construct to appreciating its inherently multidimensional nature, characterized by diverse types, functions, levels, and audience structures. Although this shift has expanded our knowledge, it has also introduced increased complexity and fragmentation. To systematize this scattered work on a multifaceted view of status, we develop a comprehensive framework that integrates the diverse research findings. For each constituent part of this framework, we review key themes and insights in the literature and outline future …

Twenty Years Of The Application Of Rooney Rule And Diversity Practices In The Nfl Workplace, David M. Savino
Journal of the North American Management Society
While the inception of the Rooney Rule has been generally applauded in its intention, the results achieved have been less than noteworthy. In the 20 years since its inception and application in team searches for head coaches of the National Football League, the outcome may be a true sign of the difficulty associated with creating fair and equitable job opportunities in any workplace. Also, there has been a long-standing and deeply entrenched system that has been in place, especially in the sports world, to ensure little change in the overall system. This has not only been true for the sports …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Conscious Capitalism Effects On Gross Profit Margin Over Time, Alyssa Newsom, Arlene Ramkissoon, Douglas Ruml, Edward Lukco
Journal of the North American Management Society
Business is a vital part of American society, and the decisions made by businesses affect more than just the economy. Conscious Capitalism (CC) recognizes this important role, and it challenges businesses to operate in a responsible manner. CC recognizes the need to make a profit in order to succeed in a competitive market, and seeks to encourage profit by following four tenets of conscious business—conscious leadership, conscious culture, stakeholder orientation, and higher purpose— so that businesses attract customers and will experience increased profits over time. This study found that, while the gross profit margins of companies who practice CC were …

Working Remotely And Corporate Culture Wars In The Post-Pandemic Era, David M. Savino, Danielle C. Foster
Journal of the North American Management Society
Organizational culture is a sacred element of any organization. It is the lifeblood and the guiding force that makes each organization unique in its ability to navigate day-to-day and longer-term perspectives of corporate operations. Strong cultures help identify direction and philosophy and provide confidence in how to proceed to pursue innovative ideas and solve problems. Since 2020, the core value and the strength of many organizational cultures have been tested as a result of the increased reliance on working remotely and the adoption of a hybrid model of business operations not previously utilized to a great degree. While many survived …

Examining Employees Under Stress By Pandemic, Hurricane, And Bridge Closure, Hilmi A. Atadil, Alison J. Green, Nestor M. Arguea
Journal of Global Business Insights
As researchers, recognizing and capturing once-in-a-lifetime events in real-time is essential. The researchers felt compelled to document the impacts of the natural disasters, pandemics, and bridge closures that directly affected the geographical area in which they lived. These sequential crises touched countless lives in the region. Most critically, disseminating and recording these rapid developments has been vital so that others may learn from this time when faced with similar situations. It is the duty of researchers immersed in such extraordinary circumstances to acknowledge and examine the implications in the moment, given the singularity of living through consecutive disasters of this …

This paper investigated the nexus between sustainability-oriented innovation (SOI) initiatives and exceptional profitability in high-performing companies. To this aim, employing a multiple comparative case study methodology, we analyzed 10 cases that excel in both return-on-sales (ROS) compared to industry medians and are actively engaged in SOI initiatives with public evidence. The findings of the study are categorized into internal and external factors affecting company performance, shedding light on managerial practices, organizational culture, and industry-specific variables. From a managerial standpoint, this paper offers valuable insights for managers seeking to balance between sustainable practices, encompassing multiple social and environmental aspects of corporate …
The Influence Of Societal Nationalist Sentiment On Trade Flows, Douglas Dow, Ilya Cuypers
The Influence Of Societal Nationalist Sentiment On Trade Flows, Douglas Dow, Ilya Cuypers
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In recent years, the world has witnessed a backlash against globalization and a rise in populist and nationalist movements around the world. However, there appears to be little empirical research concerning how these movements, and especially nationalist sentiment, actually influence trade. Therefore, we explore how and when nationalist sentiment within a country influences trade. Our results indicate that the effect of nationalist sentiment on imports is mediated by lower participation in free trade agreements (FTAs) but not via tariffs. Furthermore, we are unable to confirm support for a direct effect of nationalist sentiment on imports, as predicted by the consumer …

Demand Pull Versus Resource Push Training Approaches To Entrepreneurship: A Field Experiment, Simone Santamaria, Niloofar Abolfathi, Ishtiag Pasha Mahmood
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We compare the efficacy of two broad approaches to entrepreneurship training: a training prioritizing demand-side activities versus a training prioritizing resource-side activities. We do so by running a field experiment inside a 6-month entrepreneurship program involving 236 early-stage entrepreneurs. Inspired by our training, the first group invested more time interacting with potential customers and developing a deep understanding of customer needs and problems. The other group, in contrast, spent more time identifying and exploiting their core resources such as their network. Our results reveal that the training prioritizing demand-side activities is substantially more effective. At the end of the program, …

This study is the systematic review of literature on the resilience of tourism businesses. Following the various crises and disasters that shook the World between 2000 and 2020, the interest of researchers in tourism resilience has increased significantly. Despite the interest felt by these scientists, the notion of resilience has remained fragmented in terms of its definition and dimensions. This review presents an overview of the literature on the resilience of tourism businesses from 2013 to June 2023. The study revealed that there is a lack of cohesion in the literature on resilience from the definition to its influencing factors. …

How Deep-Level And Surface-Level Board Diversity, Formal And Informal Social Structures Affect Innovation, Guoli Chen, Po-Hsuan Hsu, Yen Teik Lee, Daniel Z. Mack
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Despite a growing interest in understanding how board diversity shapes firms’ innovation, findings about the impact of board diversity have remained mixed. In this paper, we conceptualize board diversity as two forms – deep-level and surface-level – and find that these two forms of board diversity have opposing effects on a firm's innovation. We also theorize how formal and informal social structures can strengthen the positive effect of deep-level diversity yet simultaneously weaken the negative impact of surface-level diversity. We test our hypotheses with a panel of 42,432 firm-year observations from 2000 to 2019. Our paper contributes to the literature …

Attentional Engagement And Strategic Responses To Discontinuous Environmental Change: Evidence From The Us Banking Industry, Daniel Z. Mack, Theresa S. Cho, Andrew C. Yi
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
While prior research has established a link between the attention an organization allocates to the external environment and its adaptations to environmental change, the nature of the cognitive processes that underlie this link remains underexamined. In this study, we explore how patterns of attentional engagement—that is, the extent to which attention allocation is focused and/or consistent over time—influence the organization’s formulation of strategic responses to discontinuous change. We advance a situated perspective on attentional engagement by suggesting how the type of learning and cognitive processes are situated in different attentional-engagement structures, and can, in turn, lead to heterogeneous strategic responses …

Innovation In Dynamic Knowledge Landscapes: Using Topic Modelling To Map Inventive Activity And Its Implications For Financial Performance, Simon J.D. Schillebeeckx, Yimin Lin, Gerard George
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We examine the relationship between innovation and performance in the agricultural industry by studying how a firm's patent portfolio position in the knowledge landscape moderates the relationship between three firm search dimensions (scope, specialisation, and commitment) and the firm's financial performance. To represent dynamism in the knowledge landscape, we apply topic modelling to 67,120 patent texts of 571 firms and introduce two complementary perspectives on how knowledge can be dynamically categorised. This allows us to create two representations of the knowledge structure to identify contested (scarce) clusters of high (low) recent inventive activity and emergent clusters where knowledge ambiguity has …

Heterogeneous Adaptability: Learning, Cash Resources, And The Fine-Grained Adjustment Of Misaligned Governance, Xavier Martin, Ilya Cuypers
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Research Summary: When can a firm make fine-grained adjustments to misaligned subsidiary governance? We examine whether and under what conditions a firm will adapt the equity stake it owns in a subsidiary, enabling improved alignment of the stake with the uncertainty in the local environment. We predict that the rate of adaptation of misaligned equity stakes depends on the experiential and vicarious learning from which the firm can draw, and that these learning effects are contingent on possessing fungible slack resources, specifically cash. Using a sample of 726 Japanese-foreign subsidiaries established in 38 host countries over a 21-year period, we …
