Prioritizing Strategic Cyberspace Lethality, Andrew J. Schoka Oct 2019

Prioritizing Strategic Cyberspace Lethality, Andrew J. Schoka

Military Cyber Affairs

The primary concern of United States national security policy, as detailed in the 2018 National Defense Strategy, has shifted from asymmetrical counter-insurgency operations to countering inter-state strategic competition by rogue regimes and revisionist powers. This doctrinal shift has prompted an increased emphasis on military lethality, particularly in strategic-level cyberspace operations intended to counter open challenges to the global security environment and United States preeminence. Drawing from the theory of constraints in industrial engineering and Bayesian search theory in operations research, this paper identifies the key organizational constraints that hinder the lethality of the Department of Defense’s strategic-level cyberspace operations units …

A Meticulous Food Safety Plan Today Avoids Handcuffs Tomorrow, Kim Bousquet Jun 2019

A Meticulous Food Safety Plan Today Avoids Handcuffs Tomorrow, Kim Bousquet

Journal of Food Law & Policy

In August 2010, thousands of people across the United States were poisoned by eating eggs unknowingly tainted with Salmonella enteritidis bacteria. Following a lengthy investigation, the owners of the facility where the outbreak began were sentenced to three months in prison. This is not a one-off case; poor food safety practices are responsible for several outbreaks and often end in incarceration. Filthy hen houses, diseased fruit storage, and negligent food processing may be the last thing we want to imagine, but these practices have much to teach today's food producers. This article first examines how poor food production practices can …

The Yin And Yang Of Business Strategy, Edward Dennehy Jan 2019

The Yin And Yang Of Business Strategy, Edward Dennehy

Irish Business Journal

The purpose of this paper is to provide a ‘grounded’ approach to business strategy formulation on the basis that the generic strategy approach lacks contextual sensitivity. Today’s strategists need to constantly assess the degree to which their businesses are achieving both market effectiveness and organisational efficiency. Drawing on primary and secondary research the paper examines business strategy formulation as a balancing act between achieving organisational effectiveness and efficiency and provides a matrix that can help identify where a business lies in this process.

Yeats’S Legacy And Literary Tourism: A Study Of The Yeats Winter School In Sligo, Mary Mcguckin

Irish Business Journal

Literary tourism is of increasing importance within the field of cultural and heritage tourism yet remains under-represented in academic literature. Smith, et al. (2010, p. 108) define it as a “tourism activity motivated by interest in an author, a literary creation or setting, or the literary heritage of a destination”. The typical profile of a literary tourist is that of a well- educated holidaymaker who is seeking an authentic experience, may have heard about the place’s linkage with a writer but may not have high levels of knowledge about the actual work of the writer. The socio-economic characteristics of literary …

How To Apply A Strategic Approach To Deliver Legacies From Hosting Mega Sport Events, Tracey J. Dickson Jan 2019

How To Apply A Strategic Approach To Deliver Legacies From Hosting Mega Sport Events, Tracey J. Dickson

ICHRIE Research Reports

In the process of bidding for and organizing mega sport events (e.g., Olympics, Paralympics, and FIFA World Cups), there are many opportunities to leave a legacy for the host communities. The more obvious legacies are new stadiums, better transport, and urban redevelopment. Less obvious legacies are increased sport participation and enhanced volunteering activity. There is little research after the events that demonstrate these legacies. This Research Report is informed by recent research that highlights the lack of strategic planning for legacies. To outline how a host community could increase their chances of delivering legacies after hosting mega sport events this …
