How The Usage Of It Is Effecting Academic Libraries, Mohammed J. Sarwar Dec 2014

How The Usage Of It Is Effecting Academic Libraries, Mohammed J. Sarwar

Mohammed J Sarwar

The purpose of this treatise is to determine how information technology is affecting the usage of services in the academic library. Various studies suggest that there has been a decline in usage of traditional face-to-face reference services. The majority of the college students prefer to use the Web instead of frequenting the library. Librarians and educators are concerned that these students are developing poor research skills if they only use the internet for research. Many of them are not familiar with the best electronic resources. Librarians may have less reference work but they will need to offer instruction on using …

There is a need for more development programs that increase diversity in top leadership so that leadership at the highest levels of these organizations better reflect the demographics of the United States. There are numerous studies that demonstrate many professionals of color do not advance in their careers as quickly as their counterparts. This paper discusses how leadership development strategies tailored for …

Tripping And Falling Into The Future: An Eolithic Perspective, Keri Schwab

Keri Schwab

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Thirty years ago, Dustin and McAvoy (1984) published an essay in Environmental Ethics titled “Toward Environmental Eolithism.” The article compared and contrasted two distinct orientations to environmental planning and management: the design mentality and the eolithic mentality. The authors concluded that the more popular design mentality lacked obscure eolithic mentality was a superior orientation to environmental planning and management. Critical And Creative Thinking And Structured Analytic Methodologies: From “Think Flow” To “Work Flow”, James L. Harper

James L Harper

Training prepares for the “known.” Education prepares us for the “unknown.” That unknown should spark greater analytic dialogue within the intelligence enterprise regarding what our analyst training and education baseline should encompass as well as address the training strategies necessary to drive the Army intelligence community to a more refined analytic point. Before delving into what those analytic swing mechanics consist of, let us first review the premium placed on our analysis today and the operational and intelligence processes in order to better understand how and when our analytics come into play.

Public Accounts Committees In Eastern And Southern Africa. A Comparative Analysis, Riccardo Pelizzo, Abel Kinyondo

riccardo pelizzo

This article provides the first and most comprehensive analysis of Public Accounts Committees (PACs) from Eastern and Southern Africa building on the work of McGee, Jacobs, Stapenhurst, and Staddon. By analyzing an original set of data, this article shows that PACs in these two regions are bigger, have more staff members, and are more likely to be chaired by opposition Members of Parliament than they have in other countries and regions. Furthermore, the data show that Eastern and Southern African PACs are more active than their counterparts elsewhere. However, lack of political will and limits to the range of powers …

Modele Biznesowe A Kapitał Intelektualny Przedsiębiorstwa, Anna Ujwary-Gil Jan 2014

Modele Biznesowe A Kapitał Intelektualny Przedsiębiorstwa, Anna Ujwary-Gil

Anna Ujwary-Gil

Bryane Michael

Patent Overlay Mapping: Visualizing Technological Distance, Luciano Kay, Nils Newman, Jan Youtie, Alan L. Porter, Ismael Rafols

Jan Youtie

This paper presents a new global patent map that represents all technological categories and a method to locate patent data of individual organizations and technological fields on the global map. This overlay map technique may support competitive intelligence and policy decision making. The global patent map is based on similarities in citing-to-cited relationships between categories of the International Patent Classification (IPC) of European Patent Office (EPO) patents from 2000 to 2006. This patent data set, extracted from the PATSTAT database, includes 760,000 patent records in 466 IPC-based categories. We compare the global patent maps derived from this categorization to related …

Compound Interest And The Power Of Saving, Richard H. Serlin Jan 2014

Compound Interest And The Power Of Saving, Richard H. Serlin

Richard H. Serlin

This is an article with an included assignment that I give to my personal finance 1 students. The first part talks about the power of compound interest. I go into depth about the intuition why it's so powerful, why it takes off, and has been called the eighth wonder of the world. I've haven't seen anywhere else an extensive explanation of the intuition like I have here.

In the second part I give the students a nice assignment to see how much their savings can grow if they invest even a modest amount consistently, month in and month out, in …

Timing Is Everything? An Empirical Analysis Of The Determinants Of Service Quality Provision, Olivier Chatain, Alon Eizenberg Jan 2014

Timing Is Everything? An Empirical Analysis Of The Determinants Of Service Quality Provision, Olivier Chatain, Alon Eizenberg

Olivier Chatain

We utilize a unique database from a large legal services provider to examine how service quality responds to the firm's available capacity, and to the nature of the firm-client relationship. We develop empirical measures of both the (internal) level of resources available to the firm at different points in time, and of the (external) value creation for customers. Our results indicate that service quality increases in the amount of the firm's available resources, suggesting that quality adjustment can be used as a means of tackling capacity constraints. We also find that service quality increases in the number of previous successful …

Regional Institutional Development, Political Connections, And Entrepreneurial Performance In China's Transition Economy, Wubiao Zhou Jan 2014

Regional Institutional Development, Political Connections, And Entrepreneurial Performance In China's Transition Economy, Wubiao Zhou

Wubiao Zhou

While previous research has emphasized the role of political connections in facilitating entrepreneurial performance in China’ early reform period (1978 – 1999), this study argues that regional institutions had been increasingly conducive to entrepreneurial activities and, thus, also played a key role in China’s entrepreneurial success during that period. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, it aims to demonstrate how regional institutional development facilitated entrepreneurial performance in China. Second, it aims to understand how formal institutional development among Chinese regions affected the role of political connections. Using a two-level hierarchical dataset on Chinese private enterprises, this study finds …
