Downtown Malls: A Means To An End, Chester Smolski
Smolski Texts
"It has been a trying year for downtown Providence merchants. Roads that too long have been neglected are being repaired and a Westminster Mall is in the process of getting a new facelift. Dirt, dust, noise, hazardous walking and a general inconvenience have deterred potential shoppers from using downtown shops, and this is reflected in reduced sales."

'Down City' Has Gone Downhill, Chester Smolski
'Down City' Has Gone Downhill, Chester Smolski
Smolski Texts
"There is essentially only one downtown in this city-state of Rhode Island, and it is accessible to the entire state in less than one hour's driving time. Yet over the past 10 years the Providence downtown has been in a steady decline, with a limited selection and lowered quality of goods offered from fewer shops. The familiar names of a few years ago, such as Shepards, Gladdings, City Hall Hardware and others, no longer serve as retail focal points in the captial city's central business district (CBD)."

Food Animals Are Suffering: Hsus Intensifies Campaign To Eliminate Cruelty On 'Factory Farms'
Close Up Reports
Annually, our food delivery system processes more than 4 billion animals through a chain of events fraught with cruelty. As consumers, we first meet the cattle, chickens, pigs, sheep, and dairy . products at our local supermarkets. The meat is wrapped in clear plastic. The eggs are attractively displayed. The butter comes in cubes. And the veal is already breaded for our quick consumption. The animals that suffered for our daily meals are anonymous creatures we'll never meet.
Our food delivery system is one of the most efficient in the world. The large corporate farms that produce most of our …

The Politics Of Aging And Rural Social Services: An Exploratory Analysis, Roger A. Lohmann
The Politics Of Aging And Rural Social Services: An Exploratory Analysis, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The advent of federal funding for rural social services during the late 1960s and 1970s brought about changes in the political organization of rural America. A host of new organizational actors, like Area Agencies on Aging and various local aging agencies were created in rural communities across the country, in the wake of Baker v. Carr with its “one man/one vote” principle and funding through programs like the Economic Opportunity Act and the Older Americans Act. This article details a leadership succession model suggesting that local leadership of aging interests went through at least four distinct phases during this time: …

"His firm was the first to build the enclosed shopping malls that we find scattered throughout the suburbs today. It brought symphony orchestras and art museums into these malls. It was the first to provide extensive landscaping to these regional shopping centers, and which the company strives to make into community centers as well as centers of retail activity. An Exploratory Study Into The Financial Situations Of Elderly Wards Of The Public Guardian And Conservator Of Multnomah County, Ruth D. Hudson
Dissertations and Theses
It has been the practice of the Public Guardian and Conservator (PG and C*) of Multnomah County to collect fees for service to elderly wards on an annual basis usually at the time of the annual accounting. The purpose of this study is to determine the profitability of deferring the assessment and collection of fees until the termination of conservatorship. The assumption is that such a policy would provide an immediate benefit to the ward who would enjoy more spendable income while he is alive and at the same time the Public Guardian and Conservator could still collect his fee, …
