Implementing A Short-Term Field-Based Experiential Learning Activity: The Retail Scavenger Hunt, Pam Richardson, Rebeca Perren

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This article introduces the Retail Scavenger Hunt (RSH)—a short-term field-based experiential learning activity. This flexible pedagogical tool enables students to experience first-hand what is commonly referred to in the consumer-packaged goods industry as “the store check.” Although initially designed as an instructor-led activity, the authors adapted the exercise during the pandemic to be executed as a self-directed, app-based field activity. As a result, this research can compare student impressions across implementation modes.

Within the last decade, large U.S. supermarkets, like Kroger, Walmart, and Safeway have rolled out online stores (Perez, 2015). However, in 2017, when the Internet-based giant, Amazon, acquired Whole Foods and developed the Amazon Go concept store, the march toward online-only sales came into question. The purpose of this research is to attempt to understand the preferences associated with Millennials regarding online versus in-store grocery shopping preferences. This paper provides the following contributions. First, it extends …

Exploring The Relationship Between Customer Loyalty And Electronic Loyalty Schemes: An Organisational Perspective, Edmund O'Callaghan, Joan Keegan

Metaheuristics With Local Search Techniques For Retail Shelf-Space Optimization, Andrew Lim, Brian Rodrigues, Xingwen Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Efficient shelf-space allocation can provide retailers with a competitive edge. While there has been little study on this subject, there is great interest in improving product allocation in the retail industry. This paper examines a practicable linear allocation model for optimizing shelf-space allocation. It extends the model to address other requirements such as product groupings and nonlinear profit functions. Besides providing a network flow solution, we put forward a strategy that combines a strong local search with a metaheuristic approach to space allocation. This strategy is flexible and efficient, as it can address both linear and nonlinear problems of realistic …

The Impact Of Change On The Irish Retail Environment, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox Aug 1998

The Impact Of Change On The Irish Retail Environment, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox

Conference proceedings

The turbulence of environmental change is a constant challenge for the modern retailer. It acts as a Jeckyl and Hyde change agent in that it presents opportunities for the entrepreneurial firm or is ever threatening for the reactive enterprise. The law of natural selection which dictates that firms ‘adapt to this turbulence or die’, is a reality. The firm must work within parameters of ever increasing environmental change and its ability to anticipate this change becomes a prerequisite for survival. Mathur argues that markets are not a given, that it is firms which dictate the market environment through their generic …
