Partnering For Value Perfection And Business Sustainability In The Cloud Services Brokerage Market, Richard Shang, Robert John Kauffman Jan 2022

Partnering For Value Perfection And Business Sustainability In The Cloud Services Brokerage Market, Richard Shang, Robert John Kauffman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The cloud computing and services market has advanced in the past ten years. They now include most IT services from fundamental computing to cutting-edge AI capabilities. With the widespread adoption of cloud services, clients are facing the fact that they are utilizing cloud resources at a sub-optimal level. Cloud services brokers (CSBs) grew from the market to fill the needs for cloud resource management and risk mitigation. Based on analysis of the cloud market and the case of cloud services brokerage and related activities in North America, we offer theoretical analysis for how value creation works, its impacts on the …

A 2020 Perspective On "Client Risk Informedness In Brokered Cloud Services: An Experimental Pricing Study", Di Shang, Robert J. Kauffman May 2020

Cloud computing and the cloud services market have advanced in the past ten years. Cloud services now include most information technology (IT) services from fundamental computing services to more cutting- edge artificial intelligence (AI) services. Accordingly, opportunities have emerged for research on the design of new market features to improve the cloud services market to benefit providers and users. Based on our observation of the recent development of cloud services, in this short research commentary, we share our agenda for future studies of this important sector of IT services.

A Strategic Value Appropriation Path For Cloud Computing, Abhishek Kathuria, Arti Mann, Jiban Khuntia, Robert J. Kauffman Sep 2018

A Strategic Value Appropriation Path For Cloud Computing, Abhishek Kathuria, Arti Mann, Jiban Khuntia, Robert J. Kauffman

Cloud-based information management is one of the leading competitive differentiation strategies for firms. With the increasing criticality of information management in value creation and process support, establishing an integrated capability with cloud computing is vital for organizational success in the changing landscape of business competition. These issues have received scant attention, however. We draw on the resource-based view, dynamic capability hierarchy concepts, and the perspective of operand and operant resources to suggest a cloud value appropriation model for firms. We argue that, to appropriate business value from cloud computing, the firm needs to effectively deploy cloud computing and leverage cloud …

A Metrics Suite Of Cloud Computing Adoption Readiness, Robert J. Kauffman, Dan Ma, Martin Yu Feb 2018

A Metrics Suite Of Cloud Computing Adoption Readiness, Robert J. Kauffman, Dan Ma, Martin Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent research on cloud computing adoption suggests the lack of a deep understanding of its benefits by managers and organizations. We present a firm-level cloud computing readiness metrics suite and assess its applicability for various cloud computing service types. We propose four relevant categories for firm-level adoption readiness, including technology and performance, organization and strategy, economic and valuation, and regulatory and environmental dimensions. We further define sub-categories and measures for each. Our evidence of the appropriateness of the metrics suite is derived based on a series of empirical cases developed from our project work, which encompasses input from field interviews, …

The advent of big data has created opportunities for firms to customize their products and services to unprecedented levels of granularity. Using big data to personalize an offering in real time, however, remains a major challenge. In the mobile advertising industry, once a customer enters the network, an ad-serving decision must be made in a matter of milliseconds. In this work, we describe the design and implementation of an ad-serving algorithm that incorporates machine-learning methods to make personalized ad-serving decisions within milliseconds. We developed this algorithm for Vungle Inc., one of the largest global mobile ad networks. Our approach also …

Joint Optimization Of Resource Provisioning In Cloud Computing, Jonathan David Chase, Dusit Niyato May 2017

Joint Optimization Of Resource Provisioning In Cloud Computing, Jonathan David Chase, Dusit Niyato

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cloud computing exploits virtualization to provision resources efficiently. Increasingly, Virtual Machines (VMs) have high bandwidth requirements; however, previous research does not fully address the challenge of both VM and bandwidth provisioning. To efficiently provision resources, a joint approach that combines VMs and bandwidth allocation is required. Furthermore, in practice, demand is uncertain. Service providers allow the reservation of resources. However, due to the dangers of over-and under-provisioning, we employ stochastic programming to account for this risk. To improve the efficiency of the stochastic optimization, we reduce the problem space with a scenario tree reduction algorithm, that significantly increases tractability, whilst …

A Metrics Suite Of Cloud Computing Adoption Readiness, Robert J. Kauffman, Dan Ma, Martin Yu Dec 2014

A Metrics Suite Of Cloud Computing Adoption Readiness, Robert J. Kauffman, Dan Ma, Martin Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent research on cloud computing adoption indicates that there has been a lack of deep understanding of its benefits by managers and organizations. This has been an obstacle for adoption. We report on an initial design for a firm-level cloud computing readiness metrics suite. We propose categories and measures to form a set of metrics to measure adoption readiness and assess the required adjustments in strategy and management, technology and operations, and business policies. We reviewed the relevant interdisciplinary literature and interviewed industry professionals to ground our metrics based on theory and practice knowledge. We identified four relevant categories for …

Pricing Strategy For Cloud Computing Services, Jianhui Huang Feb 2014

Pricing Strategy For Cloud Computing Services, Jianhui Huang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The cloud computing services market exhibits unique characteristics such as instant accessibility, fluctuating demand and supply, and interruptible service provision. Various pricing mechanisms exist in current industry practice. None of these pricing mechanisms, however, is comprehensive enough to capture all these features in a way that allows the vendors to optimize resource allocation. This dissertation identifies key factors related to cloud computing pricing, and examines their interplays. This research uses multiple approaches, including a market survey, game theory modeling, simulation, lab experiments and econometric modeling, to analyze the pricing strategy of cloud services vendors. A field study of a representative …

Architectural Control And Value Migration In Layered Ecosystems: The Case Of Open-Source Cloud Management Platforms, Richard Tee, C. Jason Woodard Jun 2013

Architectural Control And Value Migration In Layered Ecosystems: The Case Of Open-Source Cloud Management Platforms, Richard Tee, C. Jason Woodard

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Our paper focuses on strategic decision making in layered business ecosystems, highlighting the role of cross-layer interactions in shaping choices about product design and platform governance. Based on evidence from the cloud computing ecosystem, we analyze how concerns about architectural control and expectations regarding future value migration influence the design of product interfaces and the degree of openness to external contributions. We draw on qualitative longitudinal data to trace the development of two open-source platforms for managing cloudbased computing resources. We focus in particular on the emergence of a layered "stack" in which these platforms must compete with both vertically …

Cloud Services From A Consumer Perspective, Philip Koehler, Arun Anandasivam, Dan Ma Aug 2010

Cloud Services From A Consumer Perspective, Philip Koehler, Arun Anandasivam, Dan Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although there is an increased attention on Cloud Computing in the academic literature in the recent years, most research work focus on technical aspects of cloud computing. Research on consumers’ preferences for cloud services is limited to studies from consulting and industry companies. This paper fills the gap by empirically identifying consumer preferences for cloud service attributes. Using conjoint methods we reveal the relative importance of different attributes of cloud services. The results help both practitioners and academic researchers to better understand the prerequisites of a successful market introduction of cloud services and to design appropriate services. Moreover, the derived …
