Pilgrimages and pilgrimage centres are a subject of research often undertaken from the perspective of geographic sciences. Geographical research on pilgrimage movement and sanctuaries is important due to its focus on the spatial aspect. This article analyses the current state of research on pilgrimage centres. Pilgrimage is defined as a journey to the Holy but more specifically as an inner journey to one’s deepest religious feelings.
