Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: An Update On The Cost And Length Of Stay Associated With Treatment During The Hospital Stay, Kimberly Stanfield, Kylie Day, Sarah M. Clemente, Alberto Coustasse

Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) has been costly for the healthcare system; every 19 minutes, a newborn was diagnosed in 2021. Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT)) for expecting mothers has been shown to decrease costs and length of stay for newborns NAS. This study utilized a literature review and a semi-structured interview. The research showed that medically assisted treatment with methadone or buprenorphine during pregnancy decreased costs, LOS, and severity of symptoms for newborns diagnosed with NAS. Introduction: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) has been costly for the healthcare system, for every 24 minutes a baby was diagnosed in 2020. Uniform programs to diagnosis, track and prevent NAS have not been implemented previously. The NCBDDD worked with 6 states to implement a uniform surveillance program. By tracking the NAS incidence rate, the Apgar scores of infants with NAS, the length of stay for those infants, the cost of care for those infants and the percentage of mothers of infants with NAS were participating in Medication Assisted Treatment the effectiveness of the surveillance programs may be assessed.

Introduction: As of 2017, 54 out of every 1,000 children born in West Virginia were affected by opioid use. NAS Centers provided care to infants who have been diagnosed with, or have been vulnerable to develop, NAS. The purpose of this research study reviewed the Pediatric Opioid Endemic happening in West Virginia and determined if NAS programs and prenatal opioid maintenance therapy would increase access to NAS patients and decrease the cost of treatments.

Introduction: West Virginia’s opioid epidemic has been the cause of about 1,000 deaths each year. Opioid abuse has become an issue among pregnant mothers and has increased the effects of NAS in infants. The purpose of this research study was to evaluate the participation of prenatal opioid maintenance to determine if it has decreased the amount of treatment needed for NAS in infants in WV.
