Business Process Management: Helping Organizations Remain Competitive, Kevin P. Duffy, Jeremy Humble
ISSCM Faculty Publications
Business process management involves the examination of business processes in organizations, in order to make them more effective and efficient. BPM changes the focus of analysis from the organization as a whole to the organizational process. A process is a series of steps that lead to an outcome and may be simple or complex, depending on the type and number of steps involved. A process within an organization by which the company either introduces new products or refreshes old ones with new features, thus providing the market with new product offerings.

Moreover, employee’s participation in decision making process is predicated to positively influence his/her perception of justice.
Public Comprehension Of Published Data - Technology To The Rescue?, Paul Lorton Jr
Public Comprehension Of Published Data - Technology To The Rescue?, Paul Lorton Jr
Business Analytics and Information Systems
There is a need for the public to monitor the efficacy of what the public funds. This certainly was the view in 1989 when the voters of California passed Proposition 98 – the Classroom Instructional Improvement and Accountability Act.
Since the passage of Proposition 98, every public K-12 school in California has published and distributed a School Accountability Report Card (SARC) as hard copy sent home to the parents and, as the revised law compelled, made available on the internet.
Did the use of this technology (i.e., the internet and the infrastructure it requires) realize its purpose – to inform? …
Developing A Culturally Responsive Classroom Collaborative Of Faculty, Students, And Institution, Paul J. Colbert
Developing A Culturally Responsive Classroom Collaborative Of Faculty, Students, And Institution, Paul J. Colbert
MBA Faculty Conference Papers & Journal Articles
Culture is integral to the learning process. It is the organization and way of life within the community of students and teachers and directs the way they communicate, interact, and approach teaching and learning. Although founded in particular values and principles, the academy, like most organizations, is impacted day-to-day by its culture. Yet, the traditional higher education institution has not been designed to operate within a racially or ethnically diverse student population. The social, political, economic, and cultural forces that support the institution influence the teaching and learning environments. To better address cultural diversity in the classroom, faculty must first …

ISSCM Faculty Publications
Computational Thinking (CT) has been described as a universally applicable ability such as reading and writing. In this paper, we describe an innovative pedagogy using Rapid Digital Game Creation (RDGC) for learning CT skills. RDGC involves the rapid building of digital games with high-level software that requires little or no programming knowledge. We analyze how RDGC supports various CT concepts and how it may be mapped to equivalent Java concepts by building the same game using both RDGC and Java. We discuss the potential benefits of this approach for attracting computing majors, as a precursor to learning formal programming languages, …

MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications
Given declining management information systems (MIS) enrollments at our university, we seek to understand our students‘ selection of a major. Prior studies have found that students choose a major based on a number of factors, with subject matter interest consistently being most important. We contribute to the literature by developing a deeper understanding of what is meant by subject matter interest, which we refer to as smiFactors, for MIS as a major and career. Based on a qualitative analysis of open-ended survey questions completed by undergraduate business students, we confirm a number of smiFactors for MIS gleaned from recent studies …

Do Auditors Adjust Their Audit Plans Accordingly When They Encounter Material Automated Control Weaknesses?, Daniel D. Selby
Do Auditors Adjust Their Audit Plans Accordingly When They Encounter Material Automated Control Weaknesses?, Daniel D. Selby
Accounting Faculty Publications
Automated control weaknesses are associated with defects in computer hardware or computer applications. AU 319 does not require auditors to add professionals with specialized skills in automated controls (or IT audit specialists) to the audit engagement. Auditors may encounter a material automated control weakness and adjust their audit plan without the assistance of an IT audit specialist. Thus, auditors may not adjust their audit plan enough to gain an understanding of the material automated control weakness. This is an important problem for auditors because this problem may result in misstated financial statements and incorrect internal control opinions if auditors fail …
Re-Solving Stochastic Programming Models For Airline Revenue Management, Lijian Chen, Tito Homem-De-Mello
Re-Solving Stochastic Programming Models For Airline Revenue Management, Lijian Chen, Tito Homem-De-Mello
MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications
We study some mathematical programming formulations for the origin-destination model in airline revenue management. In particular, we focus on the traditional probabilistic model proposed in the literature. The approach we study consists of solving a sequence of two-stage stochastic programs with simple recourse, which can be viewed as an approximation to a multi-stage stochastic programming formulation to the seat allocation problem. Our theoretical results show that the proposed approximation is robust, in the sense that solving more successive two-stage programs can never worsen the expected revenue obtained with the corresponding allocation policy. Although intuitive, such a property is known not …
Information Risk And Underwriter Switching In Seos: Evidence From China, Wei Luo, Pingui Rao, Heng Yue
Information Risk And Underwriter Switching In Seos: Evidence From China, Wei Luo, Pingui Rao, Heng Yue
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
In this paper we examine whether information risk affects underwriter switching in a seasoned equity offering (SEO) process. Building on previous research, we hypothesize that SEO firms and underwriters associate with one another by mutual choice, and firms with a low degree of information risk tend to match up with prestigious underwriters. Using a sample of SEO firms in China and employing accruals quality as a proxy of information risk, we find evidence consistent with our hypothesis: the information risk and the initial public offering (IPO) underwriters’ reputation at the time of the SEO jointly determine the probability that the …

The Impact Of Mobile Technology On The Viewing Experience Of The Avid Sports Fan, Kimberley Hansen
The Impact Of Mobile Technology On The Viewing Experience Of The Avid Sports Fan, Kimberley Hansen
Honors Scholar Theses
Viewing sports on television is a very different experience than viewing a game in-person. Sports commentators on television are seemingly able to pull up random statistics as soon as something unexpected happens during a game. Because these statistics are discussed on television, any sports fan who wants to watch a game in-person misses out on the opportunity to hear them during the game. This study identifies what statistics, both common and uncommon, are considered important or interesting by avid sports fans who watch a particular sport at least two times per week. In addition, it considers the rise of mobile …
Capacity-Driven Pricing Mechanism In Special Service Industries, Lijian Chen, Suraj M. Alexander
Capacity-Driven Pricing Mechanism In Special Service Industries, Lijian Chen, Suraj M. Alexander
MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications
We propose a capacity driven pricing mechanism for several service industries in which the customer behavior, the price demand relationship, and the competition are significantly distinct from other industries. According our observation, we found that the price demand relationship in these industries cannot be modeled by fitted curves; the customers would neither plan in advance nor purchase the service strategically; and the competition would be largely local. We analyze both risk neutral and risk aversion pricing models and conclude the proposed capacity driven model would be the optimal solution under mild assumptions. The resulting pricing mechanism has been implemented at …

Usage-Based Pricing Of Software Services Under Competition, Ram Bala, Scott Carr
Usage-Based Pricing Of Software Services Under Competition, Ram Bala, Scott Carr
Information Systems and Analytics
With the emergence of high speed networks, software firms have the ability to deploy ‘software as a service' and measure resource usage at the level of individual customers. This enables the implementation of usage-based pricing. We study both fixed and usage-based pricing schemes in a competitive setting where the firm incurs a transaction cost of monitoring usage if it implements usage-based pricing. Offering different pricing schemes helps to differentiate the firms and relax price competition, particularly at higher monitoring costs, even when competing firms offer the same service quality. However, the low usage customers acquired by offering usage-based pricing are …

Differentiating Knowledge Processes In Organisational Learning: A Case Of “Two Solitudes”, Siu Loon Hoe, Steven Mcshane
Differentiating Knowledge Processes In Organisational Learning: A Case Of “Two Solitudes”, Siu Loon Hoe, Steven Mcshane
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The fields of organizational behavior (OB)/strategy and marketing have taken different paths over the past two decades to understanding organizational learning. OB/strategy has been pre-occupied with theory development and case study illustrations, whereas marketing has taken a highly quantitative path. Although relying on essentially the same foundation theory, the two disciplines have had minimal crossfertilization. Furthermore, both fields tend to blur or usually ignore the distinction between structural and informal knowledge processes. The purpose of the paper is to highlight the distinction between informal and structural knowledge acquisition and dissemination processes and propose new definitions to differentiate them. Future research …
Channel Selection And Coordination In Dual-Channel Supply Chains, Gangshu (George) Cai
Channel Selection And Coordination In Dual-Channel Supply Chains, Gangshu (George) Cai
Information Systems and Analytics
This paper investigates the influence of channel structures and channel coordination on the supplier, the retailer, and the entire supply chain in the context of two single-channel and two dual-channel supply chains. We extensively study two Pareto zone concepts: channel-adding Pareto zone and contract-implementing Pareto zone. In the channel-adding Pareto zone, both the supplier and the retailer benefit from adding a new channel to the traditional single-channel supply chain. In the contract-implementing Pareto zone, it is mutually beneficial for the supplier and the retailer to utilize the proposed contract coordination policy. The analysis suggests the preference lists of the supplier …

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)
While geographic information systems (GIS) can provide information on the static locations of critical infrastructure and evacuation routes, they do not provide the dynamically changing locations of things and people on the move. In contrast, radio frequency identification (RFID) wireless network technology can automatically identify and track the movement of assets (i.e., fire engines, ambulances, and rescue workers) and vulnerable citizens on the move (i.e., the elderly and the disabled), and hence providing local governments and communities with real-time information and enhanced decision-making capabilities, during chaotic disaster response operations (i.e., evacuation). Although the potential high impact and strategic value of …
