[Excerpt] People migrate and areas gain or lose population for a variety of reasons: differences in potential earnings, in job availability, in schooling opportunities, in quality of life, proximity to friends and relatives, and so on. The economic model of migration holds that the central factor determining individual migration decisions is the perceived opportunity to attain higher economic status. Area populations are expected to change differentially according to the economic opportunities offered. As sustainability is linked to social responsibility, sustainable development is inherently linked to human rights. The social, economic, cultural and environmental struggles among indigenous communities of Chiapas, Mexico, speak of the centrality of human rights in achieving sustainable development. This paper addresses the theoretical and practical implication that human rights have if placed at the center of sustainable development models. En este artículo se asume implícitamente la hipótesis de que el nivel de competitividad en su forma territorial (en este caso municipal) determina al nivel de desarrollo humano, no obstante, tratar de corroborar esta relación implica realizar un trabajo de naturaleza confirmatoria (por ejemplo, un modelo econométrico espacial) mismo que no forma parte de los objetivos de este trabajo, ya que se considera necesario tener un primer acercamiento al fenómeno de estudio y para ello resulta muy útil el Análisis Exploratorio de Datos Espaciales (AEDE). The December 22, 1997 massacre of indigenous Maya people in town of Acteal in the Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico is an unsolved justice and indigenous rights case. Although some paramilitary associated people were imprisoned and liberated by a decision of the Mexican Supreme Court, the sense of justice and proper reparation is nothing but a frustrated reality for various indigenous groups, especially for the family members of the victims, members of Las Abejas (The Bees) civil society organization.

Within the context of the United Nations's mission to promote peace, development and human rights, this presentation illustrated how Chiapas and the involvement of universities can promote dialogue, conflict resolution and systemic change. The case of DePaul University international engagement stimulated dialogues and inspired other universities to collaborate with the UN and promote international engagement with NGOs and civil society organizations.

Doing research in dangerous and post-conflict areas require specific methodologies and techniques. This article explores the cross-cultural collective interviews and focus groups methods developed and adapted during the a fieldwork among Maya indigenous communities in Chiapas, Mexico. The author reviews the challenges and advantages of adopting such culturally intelligent methods focusing on the promotion of justice and reconciliation among indigenous communities in conflict.

Las Abejas came to be known by the international community as the civil counterpart to the neozapatista movements and as a Christian pacifist movement. This book presents the voices of Las Abejas and of numerous collaborators alongside an innovative theoretical analysis of the dynamics of identity construction. The uniqueness of this study is the analysis of the role of international human rights observers in relation to indigenous communities in resistance.
