The Everett Massacre serves not only as an example of harassment of organized labor but also as an example of the violence which typified the I. W.W. movement in its attempt to win concessions from an unwilling industry. In order to understand the historical significance of this event and to place it in perspective, it is necessary to understand the growth of the I. In order to discuss the effect o unions, I feel we should first discuss the growth of unions; for at first they had very little power. Although there were unions of some sort or another existing in America since colonial days, it was late in the eighteenth century when they really began to have an influence. This influence began with the rise of the American Federation of Labor.
