An Automated Diagnostic Test And Tutorial Package For Basic Skills Of Mathematics In Post Secondary Vocational Education Of Kentucky: Construction And Validation, Odell D. Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research study was to determine characteristics of entering vocational students in Kentucky Area/State vocational schools and to develop a computerized diagnostic instrument and tutorial package for assisting students in the mastery of necessary basic skills in mathematics. After specific math skills were identified in which proficiency is required of vocational education students, item pools were constructed for each skill. The skill item pools were validated using approximately 500 public school students throughout the grades of four through eight in public schools of Harlan County, Kentucky, Lee County, Virginia, and Washington County, Tennessee. The items within each …

Measuring Job Satisfaction: A Note On The Within And Between Problem, Steven E. Markham, Dow Scott
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
An analysis of within-group and between-group sources of covariation was applied to a seven item job satisfaction measure adapted from the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. Data were collected from 159 chemical workers. Results indicated that some satisfaction items were strongly influenced by the structure of the supervisor groups. This issue of between-versus within-group variation offers a possible explanation for low correlations in past research using job satisfaction measures.

Identification Of Training Needs: A Focus Group Interview/Q-Sort Methodology, Michele Erb
Identification Of Training Needs: A Focus Group Interview/Q-Sort Methodology, Michele Erb
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In light of research that suggests that formal needs analysis leads to efficient and productive training programs, managers and a sampling of non-management employees from a mid-size manufacturing company participated in a needs assessment to determine future training needs for the company's mangers. The information was collected through focus group interviews and a Q-sort technique was developed to categorize the issues raised in the interviews. The categories of training issues and related concerns identified as a result of the focus group interview process were compared to a list of training topics generated by managers through an informal survey prior to …

An Evaluation Of The Orientation And Training Programs Of A Fast Food Franchise, Cheryl M. Donahey
An Evaluation Of The Orientation And Training Programs Of A Fast Food Franchise, Cheryl M. Donahey
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Very few attempts have been made to adequately evaluate training programs. The research reported here is an attempt to evaluate the effects of the revised orientation and training programs of a fast food franchise. Subjects consisted of 676 hourly employees of a Central Florida fast food franchise who completed questionnaires soliciting measures of the following perceptions: managements' consideration and structure levels and the effectiveness of the revised orientation and training programs. Modest support was found for the prediction that the revised programs would increase the employees' perception of managements' consideration. No evidence was found to support the hypotheses that employees …

A survey of 222 transit directors on the use of financial incentive programs (FIPs) showed that merit pay was the most widely used FIP, followed closely by noncash incentives. Concerning performance measures, 97% of the merit pay programs utilized a supervisory performance evaluation, with attendance being the 2nd most important job behavior cited. Increased employee motivation was the most frequently cited benefit of merit pay programs, with reduced absenteeism and tardiness also seen as major improvements. 88% of the merit pay programs were judged to be effective

Merit Pay: Just Or Unjust Desserts, F S. Hills, Dow Scott, S E. Markham, M J. Vest

Investigated a merit pay system within the context of a large transit organization on the West Coast. More then 800 employees (aged 26–67 yrs) completed a survey questionnaire; they had an average length of service of 13.5 yrs, ranging from 1 to 44 yrs. One finding of the study was that an employee's performance score was significantly related to the job worth score, as measured by the job grade for each employee's position. This finding suggests a form of systematic bias in performance evaluation scores. The present authors suggest a general procedure (consisting of 4 delineated steps) for evaluating any …
