Retail Investor Attention And The Limit Order Book: Intraday Analysis Of Attention-Based Trading, Artem Meshcheryakov, Drew B. Winters Apr 2022

Retail Investor Attention And The Limit Order Book: Intraday Analysis Of Attention-Based Trading, Artem Meshcheryakov, Drew B. Winters

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We are the first to examine how intraday changes in retail investor attention, measured by hourly Google searches, affect trading activity and informativeness of trades. High levels of Google search activity are followed in the next hour by more intensive trading in all stocks. The increased trading activity is initiated by retail investors as evidenced by the reduced size of new orders. After googling a company, retail investors do not become informed in the traditional sense; rather, they act as noise traders, who mistake noise for information, as their orders are picked off by truly informed traders.

PurposeThe aim of this study is to examine real estate investment trust exchange-traded funds (REIT ETFs) and test for the existence of the “asymmetric beta puzzle” phenomenon in these financial instruments that are relatively new and are gaining popularity. The “asymmetric beta puzzle” phenomenon is used to identify the hedging and diversification benefits of a financial instrument. “Asymmetric beta puzzle” exists when betas in declining markets are higher than betas in advancing markets.Design/methodology/approachTo study 14 REIT ETFs by using monthly and daily Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP) data. Capital asset pricing model (CAPM) and Fama–French three-factor model were …

Analysis Of The Relation Between The Spiders Spot And Option Implied Volatility., Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2014

Analysis Of The Relation Between The Spiders Spot And Option Implied Volatility., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study we use spectral analysis on SPY (Spiders) options to examine the relation between option spot and implied volatility for this exchange trade fund. We attempt to address the question is there a relation between the option spot and implied volatility or option implied volatility has no relation with the spot exchange trade fund volatility. We find that this relation does exist for SPY at-the-money call and put options and the in-the-money call and out-of-the-money put options. Using two spectral statistics – the coherence and the phase statistics, we find that the SPY option implied volatility and spot …

An Empirical Examination Of Negative Economic Value Added Firms., Stoyu Ivanov, Kenneth Leong, Janis Zaima Jan 2014

An Empirical Examination Of Negative Economic Value Added Firms., Stoyu Ivanov, Kenneth Leong, Janis Zaima

Faculty Publications

Economic value-added or EVA is a common metric that quantifies the value of the firm. However, recent studies that examine portfolio investment strategies using EVA suggest that portfolios formed with negative EVA earn relatively higher returns compared to some positive EVA firms. This study investigates whether firms with current negative EVAs perform well in the future. A sample of firms with negative EVAs in 2003 is identified, then four portfolios are formed by ranking firms from the most negative to the least negative EVAs. The returns of the four portfolios are tracked from 2004 through 2009 and correlated to four …

Analysis Of Reits And Reit Etfs Cointegration During The Flash Crash., Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2013

Analysis Of Reits And Reit Etfs Cointegration During The Flash Crash., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study I revisit the “disintegration hypothesis” of financial assets around a major crisis event. I examine whether the Vanguard Real Estate Investment Trust and iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate Index Fund exchange traded funds disintegrate from the ten largest Real Estate Investment Trusts during the 14:45 Flash Crash on May 6, 2010. I find that six of the ten largest REITs are not cointegrated with the Vanguard Real Estate Investment Trust prior to the Flash Crash and that five of the ten largest REITs are not cointegrated with iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate Index Fund prior …

Analysis Of The Effects Of Pre-Announcement Of S&P 500 Index Changes., Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2013

Analysis Of The Effects Of Pre-Announcement Of S&P 500 Index Changes., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study we attempt to answer the question – does the start of pre-announcing of S&P 500 index changes in October 1989 have an effect on the trading pattern of added or deleted firms? We document that prior to October 1989 the excess returns of added or deleted firms follow a white noise process around the event, whereas after the start of pre-announcing the excess returns can be described as nonstationary. This indicates significant excess profits to be captured around the addition or deletion event after S&P started pre-announcing changes in October 1989 but not prior to that date.

Analysis Of Bank Performance In California And The Rest Of The Twelfth Federal Reserve District, Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2012

Analysis Of Bank Performance In California And The Rest Of The Twelfth Federal Reserve District, Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study I examine the performance and sensitivity of performance to macro factors of banks headquartered in California and banks headquartered in the rest of the states in the Twelfth Federal Reserve District. I find that prior to the financial crisis which started in the fourth quarter of 2007 the non-California banks outperformed California banks; however, towards the end of the financial crisis California banks outperformed non-California banks. I also find higher macro factor sensitivities of non-California banks indicating more macro risk carried by these institutions. The higher risk explains the superior performance in expansions and underperformance in recessions …

Analysis Of Firm Risk Around S&P 500 Index Changes., Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2012

Analysis Of Firm Risk Around S&P 500 Index Changes., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study we extend the work of Vijh (1994), barberis, Schleifer and Wurgler (2005), Denis, McConnell, Ovtchinnikov and Yu (2003) and Geppert, Ivanov and Karel (2011) by examining the effect of the addition to or deletion from the S&P 500 Index on the firm's Fama - French four factor model loadings before and after the event. We find that added to and deleted from the S&p 500 Index firms experience unique sensitivity to the small cap minus Big cap (SMB) and momentum (UMD) factors. this finding and robustness tests indicate that addition to and deletion from the S&P 500 …

Reit Etfs Performance During The Financial Crisis., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study the “disintegration hypothesis” is tested. It is examined whether the Vanguard Real Estate Investment Trust and iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate Index Fund exchange traded funds disintegrate from their underlying indexes during the recent financial crisis. Failure to support the “disintegration hypothesis” of the exchange traded fund and underlying index is found. It is also found that the Vanguard Real Estate Investment Trust exchange traded fund is consistently cointegrated with its underlying index the MSCI US REITs Index, before, during and after the financial crisis. It is also found that the iShares Dow Jones US Real …

Etf Volatility Around The New York Stock Exchange Close., Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2011

Etf Volatility Around The New York Stock Exchange Close., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study we extend the work of Chang, Jain and Locke (1995) who study the Standard and Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) Index futures contract volatility around NYSE close by examining three ETFs, the Spider, the Diamonds and the Cubes price volatilities after market close. Similar to the S&P 500 Index futures contract ETFs continue trading until 16:15, which is 15 minutes after their underlying indexes are reported. This is the first study to the best of our knowledge to examine the volatility of ETFs around the NYSE close. We document that similar to the findings of Chang, Jain and …

The Implied Volatility Of Etf And Index Options., Stoyu Ivanov, Jeff Whitworth, Yi Zhang Jan 2011

The Implied Volatility Of Etf And Index Options., Stoyu Ivanov, Jeff Whitworth, Yi Zhang

Faculty Publications

We examine the option-implied volatility of the three most liquid ETFs (Diamonds, Spiders, and Cubes) and their respective tracking indices (Dow 30, S&P 500, and NASDAQ 100). We find that volatility smiles for ETF options are more pronounced than for index options, primarily because deep-in-the money ETF options have considerably higher implied volatility than deep-in-the-money index options. The observed difference in implied volatility is not due to a difference between the realized return distributions of the underlying ETFs and indices. Differences in implied volatility for ETF and index options also do not appear to be explained by discrepancies in net …

Cross-Sectional Analysis Of Index And Commodity Markets Price Discovery., Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2011

Cross-Sectional Analysis Of Index And Commodity Markets Price Discovery., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

This study examines the determinants of relative price discovery between the futures and cash prices in 30 index and commodity markets based on the Gonzalo and Granger (1995) permanent-transitory decomposition methodology. Twenty-eight indexes and commodities have proportional futures market information shares greater than 60%. Two commodities are the only exception: Feeders Cattle and Wheat-Minneapolis have price discovery occurring predominantly in the cash markets with information shares of their futures contracts of 33% and 40%, respectively. The research documents a significant cross-sectional variability of the information shares across the 30 indexes and commodities and finds that the information shares of the …

Moving Towards A Culturally Diverse Accounting Profession, Elizabeth K. Jenkins, M. Calegari Jan 2010

Moving Towards A Culturally Diverse Accounting Profession, Elizabeth K. Jenkins, M. Calegari

Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the increasing diversity in the accounting profession. Evidence is presented substantiating that over one third of recent accounting graduates are from ethnic minority backgrounds, the majority of whom are Asian/Pacific Islanders. In our university specific data, we find an even higher percentage (71%) of ethnic minorities receiving accounting degrees, with Asian/Pacific Islanders as the majority group. We also show that over one fourth of new accounting graduates hired by accounting firms are ethnic minorities of which fifty percent are Asian/Pacific Islanders.

Corporate Social Responsibility And Earnings Reporting, Mary F. Calegari, T. Chotigeat, M. A. Harjoto Jan 2010

Corporate Social Responsibility And Earnings Reporting, Mary F. Calegari, T. Chotigeat, M. A. Harjoto

Faculty Publications

Despite increasing interests on corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities among managers, the relationship between CSR and firm value through earnings reporting quality is still unclear. Absence of a strong positive effect of CSR on firm value has led researchers to believe that CSR is a res ult of a principal-agent issue between shareholders and managers. This study argues CSR represents a corporate culture that influences how a corporation reports its earnings. CSR influ ences earnings reporting ·instead ofearnings reporting drives CSR to delude shareholders. CSR induces better earnings reporting quality, therefore, CSR has an indirect but positive effect on firm …

Analysis Of The Relation Of Corn And Soybeans Futures And Etf Prices., Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2010

Analysis Of The Relation Of Corn And Soybeans Futures And Etf Prices., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study I examine the relation between corn and soybeans exchange traded funds and their respective futures contracts. Considering that the exchange traded funds for these commodities track an index based on a basket of the futures instruments a natural link exists between exchange traded funds and futures contracts. This is the first study, to the best of my knowledge, to examine this relation by using cointegration methodology and provide a Vector Error Correction Model of the relation between these two prices.

Discretionary Deletions From The S&P 500 Index: Evidence On Forecasted And Realized Earnings., Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2010

Discretionary Deletions From The S&P 500 Index: Evidence On Forecasted And Realized Earnings., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

The literature in the area of index changes finds evidence that index changes are information free events. However, Denis, McConnell, Ovtchinnikov and Yu (2003) find evidence contrary to this theory. This study extends the work of Denis, McConnell, Ovtchinnikov and Yu (2003) in an attempt to complete the assessment of the information hypothesis of index changes. Denis, McConnell, Ovtchinnikov and Yu (2003) address only index additions and do not examine index deletions in their study. Our contribution is in filling this void in the literature by examining forecasted and realized earnings of firms discretionary deleted from the S&P 500 index …

Esops And Corporate Officers' Compensation., Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2010

Esops And Corporate Officers' Compensation., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In the literature two major hypotheses have been developed for Employee Stock Ownership Plans used as a takeover defense, the management entrenchment and shareholder interest hypotheses, with the existing research not finding conclusive evidence for either one. In this paper we provide evidence that the entrenchmenthypothesis is not supported by finding that Employee Stock Ownership Plan firms pay less to their managers than non-Employee Stock Ownership Plan firms. If managers were truly entrenched they would have been able to expropriate wealth from the existing shareholders, which appears not to be the case for Employee Stock Ownership Plan firms.

Using Peer Grading And Proofreading To Ratchet Student Expectations In Preparing Accounting Cases, Laura R. Ingraham, B. A. Chaney Jan 2009

Using Peer Grading And Proofreading To Ratchet Student Expectations In Preparing Accounting Cases, Laura R. Ingraham, B. A. Chaney

Faculty Publications

Accounting educators struggle with ways to incorporate the development of critical thinking and communication skills into the curriculum. Case analysis is one tool for developing these skills. We examine whether students’ case analysis scores improve as a result of participation in peer grading and peer review. We find that students improve their ability to perform case analyses after both evaluating and being evaluated by student peers. Students initially experience an Expectation Ratcheting learning effect after evaluating the case of a peer. Subsequently, students experience an Enhanced Feedback learning effect from the comments and suggestions made by the peers who evaluated …

Was The Accounting Profession Really That Bad?, Elizabeth K. Jenkins, W. Donnelly, T. Black

Faculty Publications

To gain insight into the extent of malpractice in the State of California prior to the Passage of Sarbanes-Oxley, we examined the nature and magnitude of complains filed with the California Board of Accountancy (CBA) against both licensed and unlicensed accountants during the fiscal years 2000, 2001, and 2002. The CBA currently licenses and regulates over 73,000 licenses, with 1,431 complaints filed during the period reviewed. Disciplinary actions were taken against 283 different licensees for the three fiscal years reviewed. SEC issues were involved in 19 cases, theft or embezzlement 46 cases, public accounting malpractice 146 cases, improper retention of …

Do Bulls And Bears Listen To Whispers?, Janis K. Zaima, M. A. Harjoto Jan 2007

Do Bulls And Bears Listen To Whispers?, Janis K. Zaima, M. A. Harjoto

Faculty Publications

A post-earnings announcement drift associated with the market reaction to analyst forecasts errors remains a puzzle. This study suggests that whispers help to explain part of the puzzle. The study examines the market reaction to whispers and analysts in bull and bear markets, and finds that investors listen to whispers in the bull market and whispers help explain the post-announcement drift. In a bear market, reaction to whispers is significantly positive prior to announcement despite a down market, indicating optimism by investors who follow whispers. However, in the bear market, both whispers and analysts contribute to the post-announcement drift.

The Persistence Of Earnings And Corporate Governance In Ipo Firms, Mary F. Calegari, H. A. Maretno Jan 2005

The Persistence Of Earnings And Corporate Governance In Ipo Firms, Mary F. Calegari, H. A. Maretno

Faculty Publications

In this study, we investigate the earnings persistence in IPO firms by examining the two components of earnings: accruals and cash flows. We also analyze the impact of corporate governance on earnings and the two earnings components. In our comparison of the top and bottom quartiles based on the firms' earnings at the IPO year, we find that although the top quartile firms have a significantly positive accrual component in the IPO year, they eventually have the same negative accrual component of earnings as the bottom quartile firms in the second year after the IPO. In contrast, we find that …

Use Tax Collections, Laura R. Ingraham, K. R. Nunez, L. M. Wright Jan 2005

Use Tax Collections, Laura R. Ingraham, K. R. Nunez, L. M. Wright

Faculty Publications

The article reports on a study which investigated the level of compliance with U.S. state use tax laws and the techniques employed by the states in order to enforce use tax. Most states utilize either of two forms of tax reporting and collection. These are: the introduction of a separate use tax form/return; or the use of a separate line on the state income tax return. It was observed that utilizing a separate line item on the state income tax return might cause a rise in the number of taxpayers.

Tax Professionals' Perceptions Of Small Business Tax Law Complexity, Laura R. Ingraham, S. S. Karlinsky Jan 2005

Tax Professionals' Perceptions Of Small Business Tax Law Complexity, Laura R. Ingraham, S. S. Karlinsky

Faculty Publications

The author’s report in this article on their study in questionnaire format that tested the perception of 89 small-business tax practitioners regarding the com- plexity of 37 tax provisions. They found overwhelming consistency on the five most complex and five least complex small-business tax provisions with partner- ships, estate and gift valuations, tax-deferred ex- changes, frequency of law changes, and retirement plans topping the hit parade. Progressive tax rates, estimated taxes, Social Security/self-employment taxes, corporate capital gain provisions, and cash ver- sus accrual method were uniformly and consistently perceived as the least complex. These results have tax policy implications. According …

Tax Complexity And Small Business: A Comparison Of The Perceptions Of Tax Agents In The United States And Australia, Laura R. Ingraham, S. Karlinsky, M. Mckerchar

Faculty Publications

There is ongoing pressure in both the United States and Australia to simplify their respective tax systems, particularly in regard to small business taxpayers. In the case of both regimes, if substantial progress is to be made towards simplification, the areas of greatest need and the necessary reforms will require careful evaluation. The views of tax agents (practitioners) are highly relevant to the implementation of successful reform in that both regimes rely on self-assessment. It was considered that by undertaking a cross-jurisdictional comparison a greater understanding of complexity, from the perspective of tax agents, could be gained and that, the …
