How Ecommerce Is On The Rise, Kayla Smith
How Ecommerce Is On The Rise, Kayla Smith
Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal
In this paper I will observe how the development of new technologies (that have seen extreme changes) has led to a lot of changes in the way products are manufactured, services are offered, and money is transacted and the products delivered. Due to changes in consumer demands in the market, technology has been manipulated over the years, giving rise to multinational billion dollar organizations that keep adapting overtime to keep up with the rapidly changing consumer needs. In particular, with communication, the rise of the mobile phone network and the Internet have particularly revolutionized the way business is done entirely. …

The aim of this study was to present new mediating and moderating variables in the relationship between online advertising and purchase intention as well as visiting the store. Therefore, a qualitative study of 17 Tunisian Internet users was conducted (semi-structured interview). Results showed that the lifestyle change and the disposition to visit the store are the mediating variables between these consequences and electronic advertising (purchase intention and visiting the store). Furthermore, the involvement with the product is the moderating variable between e-advertising and lifestyle change, including disposition to visit the store.

The use of social media and social networking (SM&N) is prevalent in health care. Through social media, individuals can access information to enhance their overall health and well-being. Given that prevention is crucial to a long healthy life, as well as restraining escalating health care costs, this study offers insights into the types of social media and networking platforms that health care consumers consider most important, especially with regard to obtaining Preventive Health Care Information (PHCI). Further, it goes on to identify the demographics of persons who consider social media and social networking platforms as most important. This research used …

The History And Evolution Of The Market For ‘Delebs’ (Dead Celebrities), Denver D'Rozario, Guang Yang
Atlantic Marketing Journal
In this paper, we survey the history behind the growing market for dead celebrities (‘Delebs’) in their role of creating secondary brand associations. According to some estimates, this market is now worth $2.25 billion in annual licensing and royalty revenues (CBC 2013). We begin, by defining key terms that are used in this market. Next, we do a survey and analysis of the major events that have given rise (intentionally or unintentionally) to this market. For ease of discussion, we discuss these historical events grouped by era. We follow this with a summary of the major events and trends that …

Ecosystem-Specific Advantages In International Digital Commerce, Jiatao Li, Liang Chen, Jingtao Yi, Jiye Mao, Jianwen Liao
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We consider the applicability to digital platforms of extant international business scholarship. The organization of digital platforms has been seen to such an extent as predicated upon the bundling of external resources for collective value creation that their expansion may follow the logic of externalization. We further that literature contrasting the governance of network multinationals with that of platform-centric ecosystems. Building on and extending the theory of the ecosystem, we propose the concept of ecosystem-specific advantages. We identify costs and difficulties in the transfer of such advantages to new markets, emphasizing in particular the idea of bottlenecks. We then propose …
Optimal Design And Ownership Structures Of Innovative Retail Payment Systems, Zhiling Guo, Dan Ma
Optimal Design And Ownership Structures Of Innovative Retail Payment Systems, Zhiling Guo, Dan Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In response to the Fintech trend, an ongoing debate in the banking industry is how to design the new-generation interbank retail payment and settlement system. We propose a two-stage analytical model that takes into account the value-risk tradeoff in the new payment system design, as well as banks’ participation incentives and adoption timing decisions. We find that, as the system base value increases, banks tend to synchronize their investment and adoption decisions. When the system base value is low and banks are heterogeneous, bank association ownership maximizes social welfare. When both the system base value and bank heterogeneity are moderate, …

Online Content Consumption: Social Endorsements, Observational Learning And Word-Of-Mouth, Qian Tang, Tingting Song, Liangfei Qiu, Ashish Agarwal
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The consumption of online content can occur through observational learning (OL) whereby consumers follow previous consumers’ choices or social endorsement (SE) wherein consumers receive content sharing from their social ties. As users consume content, they also generate post-consumption word-of-mouth (WOM) signals. OL, SE and WOM together shape the diffusion of the content. This study examines the drivers of SE and the effect of SE on content consumption and post-consumption WOM. In particular, we compare SE with OL. Using a random sample of 8,945 new videos posted on YouTube, we collected a multi-platform dataset consisting of data on video consumption and …
Online Payment Systems: Are We On The Same Page?, Patrizia Roeckert, Dong-Young Kim, Marco Lorenz
Online Payment Systems: Are We On The Same Page?, Patrizia Roeckert, Dong-Young Kim, Marco Lorenz
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
Although scholars have enhanced our understanding of online payment systems (OPSs), our literature review shows that extant research has not fully addressed the way in which scholars have conceptualized OPSs and what roles organizations have played in establishing the OPSs. This study reviews the literature on OPSs and synthesizes the definitions of OPSs. This study also discusses the theoretical and practical implications of the roles of regulators, service providers, and technologies. Using the literature review method, we analyze the definitions of online payment systems from perspectives of academics, regulators, and practitioners. This study deepens our understanding of the concepts of …

Three Essays On Firm Behaviors In Online Market Platforms, Erfan Rezvani
Three Essays On Firm Behaviors In Online Market Platforms, Erfan Rezvani
Doctoral Dissertations
Across many online market platforms, customer reviews have become a prevailing mechanism to evaluate firms and disseminate information about the quality of their products/services. While prior research has well-documented the impact of such customer-generated information on firm performance such as sales (e.g. Chevalier & Mayzlin 2006, Liu, 2006), understanding how firms react to customer evaluations generates an interesting yet an underexplored topic for research. This dissertation, through three studies, aims to investigate how customer reviews tat are posted on online platforms shape how firms learn, communicate, and compete. Chapter 1 shows that learning from own experience follows an inverted U-shaped …

A Common Approach For Consumer And Provider Fairness In Recommendations, Dimitris Sacharidis, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Dimitrios Kleftogiannis
A Common Approach For Consumer And Provider Fairness In Recommendations, Dimitris Sacharidis, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Dimitrios Kleftogiannis
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present a common approach for handling consumer and provider fairness in recommendations. Our solution requires defining two key components, a classification of items and a target distribution, which together define the case of perfect fairness. This formulation allows distinct fairness concepts to be specified in a common framework. We further propose a novel reranking algorithm that optimizes for a desired trade-off between utility and fairness of a recommendation list.

Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Publications
This study uses data from an online HIV/AIDS health support virtual community to examine whether users’ emotional states and the social support they receive influence their continued usage. We adopt grief theory to conceptualize the negative emotions that people living with HIV/AIDS could experience. Linguistic analysis is used to measure the emotional states of the users and the informational and emotional support that they receive. Results show that users showing a higher level of disbelief and yearning are more likely to leave the community while those with a high level of anger and depression are more likely to stay on. …

Evaluating The Knowledge Of Conversational Agents, Mina Park, Milam Aiken, Mahesh Vanjani
Southwestern Business Administration Journal
Several studies have tested chatbots for their abilities to emulate human conversation, but few have evaluated the systems’ general knowledge. In this study, we asked two chatbots (Mitsuku and Tutor) and a digital assistant (Cortana) several questions and compared their answers to 67 humans’ answers. Results showed that while Tutor and Cortana performed poorly, the accuracies of Mitsuku and the humans were not significantly different. As expected, the chatbots and Cortana answered factual questions more accurately than abstract questions.

The last twenty years has seen phenomenal growth of social media, with companies such as Facebook, Linked In, and Twitter seeing their registered users growing into the hundreds of millions worldwide (and, in the case of Facebook, over a billion). The advantages of using social media have been touted by many, and fortunes have been made by savvy practitioners with a deft hand at using social media to their advantage. However, as with any new technology unintended consequences have begun to unfold. These consequences have been thrust to the forefront as several high-profile corporate executives and celebrities have sabotaged their …

The Flipped Class: Experiential Learning Manifested, Johnnie Williams, Olusegun Felix Ayadi, Carlton Perkins, Ladelle M. Hyman
Southwestern Business Administration Journal
Through the “flipped class,” students are introduced to new material outside the classroom before the traditional in-class lecture occurs. Ideally, flipping the class challenges students to engage in the lower levels cognitive work (remembering and understanding) outside of class. Students, then, are free to focus on higher order cognitive work (application, analysis, synthesis, and/or evaluation) in class, where they have the support of their peers and the instructor. To drive the requisite higher order cognitive work inside the classroom, it is important that in-class teaching and learning methodologies extend beyond simple information dissemination. Experiential learning, the process of transforming information …

Internet access continues to increase among the youth in developing countries, like South Africa, due to the exponential growth of mobile penetration and the higher education system’s reliance on Information and Communication Technologies. Higher education graduates are expected to be digital citizens in the workplace, which is characterised by socio-economic inclusion and academic capability. However, this increased exposure to the Internet does present information privacy challenges. This paper investigates young adults’ perceptions and concomitant behaviours to protect their information privacy when using Internet sites. The paper further aims to unpack young adults’ understanding of the potential problems and their preparedness …
