Optimal Design And Operation Of Integrated Hydrogen Generation And Utilization Plants, Ijiwole Solomon Ijiyinka Jan 2023

Optimal Design And Operation Of Integrated Hydrogen Generation And Utilization Plants, Ijiwole Solomon Ijiyinka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

There are considerable efforts worldwide for reducing the use of fossil fuel for energy production. While renewable energy sources are being increasingly used, fossil fuel still contribute about 80% of the energy used worldwide. As a result, the level of CO2 is still increasing fast in the atmosphere currently exceeding about 410 parts per million (ppm). For reducing CO2 build up in the atmosphere, various approaches are being investigated. For the electric power generation sector, two key approaches are post-combustion CO2 capture and use of hydrogen as a fuel for power generation. These two solutions can also …

Commodities Are Not Industries! A Value Chain Example, Randall W. Jackson, Patricio Aroca

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Leontief and Stone both received Nobel Prizes in Economics for development and extension of input-output (IO) analysis, a framework that has gained little traction in mainstream U.S. economics. Although IO modeling has gained renewed focus in several problem domains, many contemporary economists eschew Stone's enhancements, resulting in inconsistent analytics, even in top economics journals. In this paper, we use an increasingly common approach to value chain analysis as one example that demonstrates such conceptual misunderstandings and by presenting properly formulated alternatives, we demonstrate the extent of the consequences of neglecting the Stone enhancements and important role of reproducing results.

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Project FORESIGHT is a business-guided self-evaluation of forensic science laboratories across the globe. The participating laboratories represent metro, regional, state, and national agencies. Economics, accounting, finance, and forensic faculty provide assistance, guidance, and analysis. Laboratories participating in Project FORESIGHT have developed standardized definitions for metrics to evaluate work processes, linking financial information to work tasks, and functions. Laboratory managers can then assess resource allocations, efficiencies, and value of services—the mission of Project FORESIGHT is to measure, preserve what works, and change what does not.

The benchmark data for the 2018-2019 performance period includes laboratory submissions for a variety of fiscal …

Three Essays On Health Economics And Policy Evaluation, Shishir Shakya Jan 2020

Three Essays On Health Economics And Policy Evaluation, Shishir Shakya

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This dissertation consists of three essays on the U.S. Health care policy. Each paragraph below refers to the three abstracts for the three chapters in this dissertation, respectively. I provide quantitative evidence on how much Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) affects the retail opioid prescribing behaviors. Using the American Community Survey (ACS), I retrieve county-level high dimensional panel data set from 2010 to 2017. I employ three separate identification strategies: difference-in-difference, double selection post-LASSO, and spatial difference-in-difference. I compare how the retail opioid prescribing behaviors of counties, that are mandatory for prescribers to check the PDMP before prescribing controlled substances …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Self-reported height and weight, if accurate, provide a simple and economical method to track changes in body weight over time. Literature suggests adults tend to under-report their own weight and that the gap between self-reported weight and actual weight increases with obesity. This study investigates the extent of discrepancy in self-reported height, weight, and subsequent Body Mass Index (BMI) versus actual measurements in young adults. Physically measured and self-reported height and weight were taken from 1562 students. Male students marginally overestimated height, while females were closer to target. Males, on average, closely self-reported weight. Self-reported anthropometrics remained statistically correlated to …

This study assessed food choice priorities (FCP) and associations with consumption of fruits and vegetables (FV), fiber, added sugars from non-beverage sources, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) among college students. Freshmen from eight U.S. universities (N = 1149) completed the Food Choice Priorities Survey, designed for college students to provide a way to determine the factors of greatest importance regarding food choices, and the NCI Dietary Screener Questionnaire. Changes in FCP and dietary intake from fall 2015 to spring 2016 were assessed. Multiple regression models examined associations between FCP and log-transformed dietary intake, controlling for sex, age, race, and BMI. Participant …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between neck circumference (NC) and other anthropometric measures and examine cut-off points for males and females according to existing waist circumference cut-off levels in this age group. Across 8 universities, 1562 students underwent a physical assessment. Spearman rho correlations (ρ) were calculated to determine associations between NC and other continuous variables of health. Receiving operating characteristic curves were constructed to assess the optimal cut-off levels of NC of males and females with central obesity. Participants were predominantly Caucasian (67%), female (70%), and outside of Appalachia 2 (82%). Forty-one percent of …

An Analysis Of United States Commodity Freight Shipments, Karen R. Polenske Aug 1972

An Analysis Of United States Commodity Freight Shipments, Karen R. Polenske

Applications

The concern of the present paper is to present a discussion of the application of a new analytical tool, the multiregional input-output model, to investigate the transportation requirements in different regions of the United States.

Simulating Regional Interindustry Models For Western States, William A. Schaffer, Kong Chu Jan 1969

Simulating Regional Interindustry Models For Western States, William A. Schaffer, Kong Chu

Applications

Although regional input-output models are now most frequently constructed on the basis of reasonably adequate surveys, simulation (estimating) techniques not based on original survey data are still in use by many regional scientists for quick and less costly results. We will modify our original aggregation procedures, examine our results through several statistical tests of tables constructed for three Western states, and discuss a possible correction procedure for improving raw estimates of interindustry transactions.

Industry Reports: Manufacturing Methodology The 1947 Interindustry Relations Study, United States Department Of Labor, Bureau Of Labor Statistics

Accounts and Data

The study of Interindustry Relations for 1947 is a comprehensive analysis of the transactions relationships among the separate industries of the United States in that year. For purposes of this study, the United States economy was subdivided into about 500 separate sectors or activities, the majority of which correspond with conventional industry classifications. A detailed statistical analysis was carried out for each sector of the purchases from and sales to all sectors in 1947, and the results were reconciled within a general framework of national production and. consumption data.
