Analytics On Service Quality In Spectator Sports, Ahmet Ozkul, Gazi Duman Dec 2022

Analytics On Service Quality In Spectator Sports, Ahmet Ozkul, Gazi Duman

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Spectator sport events are made possible by the contributions of many different participants ranging from fans and players to coaches, managers and sponsors. Through the lens of co-creation of value in the spectator sports, we discuss how sport analytics can relate to spectator sport service quality by collecting and analyzing data from each participating actor.

Hospital-Physician Integration And Physician Collaboration: Implications For Care Efficiency And Outcomes, Hui Jia Aug 2022

Hospital-Physician Integration And Physician Collaboration: Implications For Care Efficiency And Outcomes, Hui Jia

Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis focuses on healthcare operations management and consists of two essays that investigate empirically how the relationship between physicians and hospitals and the relationship between peer physicians, respectively, affect clinical care outcomes and care efficiency.

In the first essay, I study hospital-physician integration as a type of organization-service provider relationship. Many prior studies have provided insights into the benefits of a tight collaboration between hospitals and physicians. However, neutral and even negative effects of this relationship on healthcare performance have been observed and discussed in the literature. This mixed evidence points to a need for further study to elucidate …

Sparse Model Selection Using Information Complexity, Yaojin Sun May 2022

Sparse Model Selection Using Information Complexity, Yaojin Sun

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation studies and uses the application of information complexity to statistical model selection through three different projects. Specifically, we design statistical models that incorporate sparsity features to make the models more explanatory and computationally efficient.

In the first project, we propose a Sparse Bridge Regression model for variable selection when the number of variables is much greater than the number of observations if model misspecification occurs. The model is demonstrated to have excellent explanatory power in high-dimensional data analysis through numerical simulations and real-world data analysis.

The second project proposes a novel hybrid modeling method that utilizes a mixture …

The Cost Of Big Data: Evaluating The Effects Of The European Union’S General Data Protection Regulation, Kara Rebecca White Sep 2021

The Cost Of Big Data: Evaluating The Effects Of The European Union’S General Data Protection Regulation, Kara Rebecca White

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

In the 1990’s the World Wide Web was created, drastically changing the way we do business, communicate, and live our lives. Ten years later in the early 2000’s the dot com boom happened, and several years later, new technology giants emerged—like Amazon, Google, and Facebook. From this, we now face “big data” that promises to solve world problems, but has the potential to create turmoil and malfeasance. My research examines the impact of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) enacted in the EU in 2016 on firm value using Tobin’s Q and CARs. Using regression analyses, I observe that Tobin’s …

Understanding Collegiate Football Ticket Prices, Ken Miller

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

The goal of this research is to build, develop, and refine a pricing model to most accurately match the actual value of the seat and section of a college’s home football games so that the revenue of the stadium is capitalized without sacrificing the end customer’s satisfaction. We started our work by reviewing literature to develop an understanding of how to measure customer value in a sports capacity while also looking at different pricing strategies across sports. Our research will build off these studies using ticketing data from the past five seasons (2015-2019) for our college’s football program. The data …

An Overview And Analysis Of The Impacts Of Extreme Heat On The Aviation Industry, Brandon T. Carpenter Jul 2019

An Overview And Analysis Of The Impacts Of Extreme Heat On The Aviation Industry, Brandon T. Carpenter

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

Weather is a common cause of flight delays and cancellations. However, the vast majority of the time when thinking about weather and its effect on aviation, winter conditions such as snow come to mind. Heat is usually one of the last types of weather we associate with airline challenges. Recently, a bomb cyclone made headlines for the disruptions it caused with travel, especially at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Interestingly, the exact opposite of winter weather conditions can cause just as many challenges. During the summer of 2017, a number of flights at various airports such as Phoenix Sky Harbor …

Supply Chain Sustainability: Understanding The Financial Impact, Matthew J. Guinn

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a differential impact on the financial performance of a company between environmental and social events.

This study uses a randomization of publicly traded companies within specific, pre-determined SIC codes, which is a collection of 66 companies, split between manufacturing and retail, to get the most accurate representation.

This study utilizes multiple regression models via STATA to analyze data compiled from the Wharton Research Database Services (WRDS) utilizing the MSCI ESG KLD, and Bloomberg, to analyze the percent increase in stock price which is the overarching models independent variable. Then, …
