The author looks at the essence of corporate philanthropy, analyzing the drivers of why corporations give and how these organizations assemble themselves within the face of crises. While there is significant research on the different types of corporate philanthropy and its drivers, there is very little known about the way decisions are reached by committee members and executives who oversee allocating these funds. We will explore how large-scale exogenous crises impact venture capital firms’ investment scope decisions during and after a crisis. We will analyze a population of 11,564 funding rounds announced between 2005Q1 until 2012Q4 in the US. Analysis shows that the 2008 Financial Crisis caused a short-term change in the geographical areas where VCs invest, and after the crisis firms tend to look further afield to locate viable investment targets. This study will contribute to entrepreneurial finance research by offering theoretical and empirical insights on how major crises affect venture capital investment and entrepreneurial activities.

The impact of COVID-19 on the hotel industry has been catastrophic and like elsewhere, the Chicago hotel market has faced steep declines in occupancy, revenues and profitability, resulting in severe staff cuts and drastic operating changes. Yet many hotels continued operating, albeit at a reduced level. What factors made it possible for hotels to adapt to these conditions? The purpose of this study was to determine how organizations communicate on Facebook during a crisis, from a relationship management perspective, and how their interactivity, responsiveness, and transparency affect their Fan page's relevance, importance, and appeal. This paper focuses on the Tylenol poisonings and the actions J & J employed to recover from this existence-threatening situation. The paper reviews the 1982 case in which Johnson & Johnson literally rewrote the book on crisis management in handling unexpected, catastrophic consumer issues. It demonstrated a high degree of integrity and moral responsibility in its handling of the poisonings. CEO Burke demonstrated decisive leadership at a time when the company needed it the most.
