More Than Fun And Games: Reconsidering The Virtues Of Strategic Management Simulations, Ken E. Zantow, Dave S. Knowlton, David C. Sharp

Faculty Publications

We look at the relationship between business simulations and the educational theory of generative learning using the framework developed by Wittrock (1974, 1990, 1992). Our findings reveal opportunities for generative learning that occur at all phases of the simulation process. Awareness of these opportunities prepares faculty to get the most from the strategic decision-making simulations. and may assist them in defining the contribution associated with their use. We suggest areas for additional research.

Corporate Change Management In Asian Business - A Comparison Between Chinese-Educated And English-Educated Chinese Entrepreneurs In Singapore, Thomas Menkhoff, Ulrike Badibanga, Yue Wah Chay

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Against the background of a rapidly changing business environment, the article examines the organizational change management behavior of the owner-managers of small and medium-sized enterprises in Singapore. The analysis of survey data is aimed at ascertaining whether there are any differences between Chinese and English-educated small (Chinese) businessmen in terms of Change Management (CM), a dichotomy that is of great historical and politico-cultural significance in Singapore. The survey data show that there are indeed differences between the subgroups (e. g. with regard to the initiation of a more participatory people management style) but these variations turned out to be far …

One might not expect a non- Christian to take an even-handed approach to evaluating something as potentially controversial as integrating faith at work. But Lewis Solomon, an ordained rabbi, interfaith minister, and professor of business law at George Washington University Law School does just this.

The Impact Of Project Portfolio Management On Information Technology Projects, Bert De Reyck, Yael Grushka-Cockayne, Martin Lockett, Sergio Ricardo Calderini, Marcio Moura, Andrew Sloper Oct 2005

The Impact Of Project Portfolio Management On Information Technology Projects, Bert De Reyck, Yael Grushka-Cockayne, Martin Lockett, Sergio Ricardo Calderini, Marcio Moura, Andrew Sloper

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The ever-increasing penetration of projects as a way to organise work in many organisations necessitates effective management of multiple projects. This has resulted in a greater interest in the processes of project portfolio management (PPM), with more and more software tools being developed to assist and automate the process. Much of the early work on PPM concentrated on the management of IT projects, largely from the perspective of the management of resources and risk. Many of the recent articles have been by vendors of the software, promoting the value of the PPM process. However, the claims made in those articles …

Experiential Learning Process: Exploring Teaching And Learning Of Strategic Management Framework Through The Winter Survival Exercise, Maheshkumar P. Joshi, Elizabeth B. Davis, Ravi Kathuria, C. Ken Weidner Ii

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This article examines an attempt to introduce experiential learning methods in a business strategy course. In organizational behavior and industrial/organizational psychology, experiential teaching methods have been so widely adopted that some authors have suggested dropping the distinction between experiential and traditional teaching. Although intuitively appealing, experiential methods have not yet become popular among professors teaching strategy to traditional-age undergraduate students. It seems that heavy reliance on case-based teaching has resulted in a lack of emphasis on experiential learning tools for strategic management. In this study, the Winter Survival Exercise was used to introduce, concisely and effectively, the strategic management framework …

Proposals For Community Discussion : A Quality Future For The Recreational Marron Fishery : A Five-Year Draft Strategy To Ensure The Long-Term Sustainability Of The Marron Fishery, Recreational Freshwater Fisheries Stakeholder Sub-Committee

Fisheries management papers

While some of the factors threatening the future of the marron fishery can be managed via traditional fisheries controls, many fall outside of the Department of Fisheries’ jurisdiction and require a ‘whole of Government’ approach to management. To help ensure a quality future for the recreational marron fishery, the Recreational Freshwater Fisheries Stakeholder Sub-committee (RFFSS) has now developed a set of draft management proposals designed to form the basis of a five-year management plan for the fishery.

Outsourcing: A Theoretical Viewpoint, Aoife O'Riordan, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth Sep 2005

Outsourcing: A Theoretical Viewpoint, Aoife O'Riordan, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth

Conference papers

Outsourcing or offshoring as it is now known has been around for many decades. In the
beginning, it was only very peripheral activities that were outsourced, i.e. blue-collar (lower skilled)
work but this is now all changing with the outsourcing of white-collar jobs. The digital revolution, the falling costs of transport and telecom costs and the opening up of the global economy helped the outsourcing market. For companies going down or contemplating the road of outsourcing there are both potential benefits and challenges, for example, the type of outsourcing they want to get involved in, and the country they want …

An Exploratory Study Of Ict Usage In Small Logistics Service Providers, Pietro Evangelista, Laura Cioffi, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

Information and communication technology (ICT) developments have strongly affected supply chain management (SCM) in recent years. ICT has had a great impact on all supply chain processes including planning, purchasing, production management, stock management, physical distribution and related integration management. Technology has become an important dimension of third party logistics (3PL) service supply as competitive advantage increasingly depends on the ability to create value for customers through the effective application of ICT. Within this process, while large 3PLs are gaining substantial benefits from technology usage and implementation, the magnitude of changes spurred by ICT dissemination in small logistics service providers …

Outsourcing: A Way To Improve The Responsiveness And Agility Within The Organisation, Aoife O'Riordan, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth Sep 2005

Outsourcing: A Way To Improve The Responsiveness And Agility Within The Organisation, Aoife O'Riordan, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth

Conference papers

Outsourcing or offshoring as it is now known has been around for many decades. In the beginning it
was only very peripheral activities that were outsourced, blue collar (lower skilled) work but this is now all changing with the outsourcing of white-collar jobs. Historically, outsourcing was used when
organisation could not perform to world-class excellence in all sectors of the organisation due to
incompetence of staff and/or management, lack of capacity, financial pressures, and/or technological
pressure. The research currently underway is initially focusing on a literature review of current outsourcing applications in the market place. From the literature review, a …

A Five Year Management Strategy For Recreational Fishing On The South Coast. The Minister For Fisheries' Decision In Response To The Final Report Of The South Coast Recreational Fishing Working Group., Jon Ford (Minister For Fisheries; The Kimberley, Pilbara And Gascoyne)

Fisheries management papers

After careful consideration of the South Coast Recreational Fishing Working Group’s recommendations and the wide range of issues raised in submissions, I have made my decisions in respect to the future management arrangements for recreational fishing in South Coast Region. I believe the new management arrangements which will be implemented in 1 January 2006 will go a long way to protecting recreational fishing quality and meeting the long term needs for the sustainable management of recreational fishing. I did note that some of the most pressing concerns raised during public meetings, and in submissions, related to the interaction between the …

Strategic Predictors Of Successful Enterprise Systems Deployment, John E. Ettlie, Victor J. Perotti, David A. Joseph, Mark Cotteleer

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose The delivered wisdom to date has enterprise system purchase and implementation as one of the most hazardous projects any organization can undertake. The aim was to reduce this risk by both theoretically and empirically finding those key predictors of a successful enterprise system deployment.

Design/methodology/approach A representative sample of 60 firms drawn from the Fortune 1000 that had recently (1999-2000) adopted enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems was used to test a model of adoption performance with significant results.

Findings Leadership (social learning theory), business process re-engineering (change the company not the technology) and acquisition strategy (buy, do not make) …

Tools To Keep Projects On The Rails - The Completion Of Projects On Time And To Budget Often Seems An Elusive Goal, But Success Rates Can Be Improved With The Application Of Risk Management Techniques, Bert De Reyck Sep 2005

Tools To Keep Projects On The Rails - The Completion Of Projects On Time And To Budget Often Seems An Elusive Goal, But Success Rates Can Be Improved With The Application Of Risk Management Techniques, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In 2004 the Standish group, a research company that produces annual reports on IT projects carried out in the US, reported that only 29 per cent of these projects were considered a success, with the vast majority running over time and over budget. Cost overruns averaged 56 per cent of original budgets, and projects took on average 84 per cent longer than originally anticipated. Anecdotal evidence suggests that things are not much better elsewhere. The construction of the new Wembley Stadium in London is two months behind schedule and Pounds 45m over budget. And the West Coast Mainline project, which …

The Development Of Double Entry Bookkeeping And Its Relevance In Today's Business Environment, Regina Libina Aug 2005

The Development Of Double Entry Bookkeeping And Its Relevance In Today's Business Environment, Regina Libina

Honors College Theses

Many civilizations developed accounting theories based on the specific needs in their societies. One of those developments was the double entry bookkeeping system. Some of the factors that contributed to the creation of double entry bookkeeping were techniques in math, the invention of coins and money as a medium of exchange, the introduction of paper, the development of a banking system, and various economic conditions that required a system of proper recording. This thesis will analyze the double entry bookkeeping system and its benefits. It will also discuss the differences between the complex capitalistic structure we operate in today with …

Management Of The Proposed South Coast Trawl Fishery. A Discussion Paper., Department Of Fisheries. Aug 2005

Management Of The Proposed South Coast Trawl Fishery. A Discussion Paper., Department Of Fisheries.

Fisheries management papers

In late 1987, the Minister approved a development plan for the South Coast Inshore Trawl Fishery (Fisheries Management Paper No. 13) and made a number of notices regulating trawling activities in the Recherche Archipelago. Fishing Boat Licences were subsequently ‘endorsed’ by reference to those notices. The development plan was declared to be for a period ending 31 December 1989, subject to extension for a further year if necessary. Despite the considerable interest in the fishery during 1986 to 1989, fishing results demonstrated that the economic returns were marginal and a number of operators withdrew from participation in the fishery (at …

A Five-Year Management Strategy For Recreational Fishing In The Pilbara/Kimberley. The Minister For Fisheries' Decisions In Response To The Final Report Of The Pilbara Kimberley Recreational Fishing Working Group, Jon Ford (Minister For Fisheries; The Kimberley, Pilbara And Gascoyne)

Fisheries management papers

The regional review for the Pilbara/Kimberley Region is now complete and I would like to thank all members of the review working group for their efforts in what has been a challenging task. I would also like to thank those members of the community who attended public meetings and made submissions on the draft discussion paper. After careful consideration of the Pilbara/Kimberley Recreational Fishing Working Group’s recommendations and the wide range of issues raised in submissions, I have made my decisions in respect to the future management arrangements for recreational fishing in Pilbara/Kimberley Region. I believe the new management arrangements, …

Introducing The Balanced Scorecard: Creating Metrics To Measure Performance, Andra Gumbus Aug 2005

Introducing The Balanced Scorecard: Creating Metrics To Measure Performance, Andra Gumbus

WCBT Faculty Publications

This experiential exercise presents the concept of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and applies it in a university setting. The Balanced Scorecard was developed 12 years ago and has grown in popularity and is used by more than 50% of the Fortune 500 companies as a performance measurement and strategic management tool. The BSC expands the traditional financial measures into three other dimensions to capture a balanced approach to measure performance in an organization. These additional dimensions are as follows: Customer Focus, Competence/Employee Learning and Growth, and Operational Efficiency. The exercise uses an analogy of a race car driver who relies …
