Emerging Research lnstitutions (ERls) can benefit from patent licensing revenues from the transfer f patented technologies into the commercial marketplace because th se added revenues can help research institutions become more sustainable financially. However, many ERls struggle to succeed in technology transfer. This study describes the development of a university technolo􀁱y transfer supply chain network sustainability tool that private and pu􀁲lic ERls can use to become more self-reliant financially. Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are ERls and are used as a case study. HBCUs lag behind their peer non-HBCUs because historically they have been under-served and were originally established …

Forensic Disciplines For Objective Global Strategic Analysis, Dale H. Shao, Lawrence P. Shao, Ralph E. Mckinney Jr.

Dale H Shao

The global nature of investing requires a thorough analysis of the firm to determine the strategic viability of the firm for investment purposes. In addition, businesses are being held more accountable for the statements they make and the actions they take concerning their business. Several forensic disciplines have recently emerged that may supply subjective and objective data that can assist investors in making their final investment decisions and determining if ongoing businesses are truly doing what is in the best interest of their shareholders. Another factor influencing the increase forensic analyses of national and multinational corporations is the increase in …

This study describes the development of a university technology transfer supply chain network sustainability tool that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) can use to become more self-reliant financially. HBCUs lag behind their peer non-HBCUs because historically they have been under-served and were originally established largely as teaching and blue collar trade schools. Increased involvement in research oriented activities such as technology transfer will likely enable HBCUs to grow into new or stronger research institutions. The literature review revealed several problem areas with non-HBCUs university technology transfer include a resource planning issues. These problem areas for non-HBCUs would be challenging …

Male Breadwinner Ideology And The Inclination To Establish Market Relationships: Model Development Using Data From Germany And A Mixed-Methods Research Strategy, Michaela Haase, Ingrid Becker, Alexander Nill, Clifford J. Shultz Ii, James W. Gentry Sep 2017

Male Breadwinner Ideology And The Inclination To Establish Market Relationships: Model Development Using Data From Germany And A Mixed-Methods Research Strategy, Michaela Haase, Ingrid Becker, Alexander Nill, Clifford J. Shultz Ii, James W. Gentry

Clifford J Shultz

A pattern found in many marketing systems, “male breadwinning,” is contingent upon overlapping and shared ideologies, which influence the economic organization and thus the type and number of relationships in those systems. Implementing a mixed-methods research methodology, this article continues and extends previous work in macromarketing on the interplay of markets, ideology, socio-economic organization, and family. A qualitative study illuminated the main ideologies behind male breadwinning and a model was developed to advance the theoretical analysis of the phenomenon of male breadwinning. An experiment in the form of a vignette study was subsequently designed and administered. The qualitative study and …

Effects Of International Study Tours On Attitude Toward Doing Business Globally: Assurance Of Learning In Executive Mba Programs, Uday S. Tate, Kamal Fatehi, Basanna Patagundi

Uday S. Tate

The past two decades have experienced and realized the wave of globalization as pervasive and impactful imperative in the world of academia, and not just in the corporate world. This realization is reflected in the 2011-13 Report by AACSB Task Force on Globalization of Management Education (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business - International, June 2011-13). The AACSB report highlights broad globalization trends in management education that have drawn the attention of institutions, corporations and business schools alike, that are striving to prepare their key stakeholders (managers and students) to face today’s complex global challenges. Today’s increasingly integrated …

Development Of The Referee Retention Scale, Lynn Ridinger, Kyungun R. Kim, Stacy Warner, Jacob K. Tingle Jul 2017

Development Of The Referee Retention Scale, Lynn Ridinger, Kyungun R. Kim, Stacy Warner, Jacob K. Tingle

Jacob K Tingle

Building upon the current sport officiating research, this study puts forth the Referee Retention Scale (RRS). Through a three-phase process, the researchers developed a valid and reliable scale to predict sport officials’ job satisfaction and intention to continue. The first phase consisted of instrument development, while the second phase included field testing of referees (n=253). After EFA and Rasch analysis, the resultant refined scale from phase 1 and 2 was then administered to 979 referees in phase 3. Phase 3 results using CFA indicated that the 7-factor, 28-item RRS was a valid and reliable tool for measuring and predicting referee …

Work-Unit Absenteeism: Effects Of Satisfaction, Commitment, Labor Market Conditions, And Time, John Hausknecht, Nathan J. Hiller, Robert J. Vance Jun 2017

Work-Unit Absenteeism: Effects Of Satisfaction, Commitment, Labor Market Conditions, And Time, John Hausknecht, Nathan J. Hiller, Robert J. Vance

John Hausknecht

Prior research is limited in explaining absenteeism at the unit level and over time. We developed and tested a model of unit-level absenteeism using five waves of data collected over six years from 115 work units in a large state agency. Unit-level job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and local unemployment were modeled as time-varying predictors of absenteeism. Shared satisfaction and commitment interacted in predicting absenteeism but were not related to the rate of change in absenteeism over time. Unit-level satisfaction and commitment were more strongly related to absenteeism when units were located in areas with plentiful job alternatives.

Seniority_List: A Tool To Address The Challenge Of Airline Mergers And Labor Integration, Robert Davison, Sean Edmund Rogers Ph.D. Jun 2017

Seniority_List: A Tool To Address The Challenge Of Airline Mergers And Labor Integration, Robert Davison, Sean Edmund Rogers Ph.D.

Sean Edmund Rogers

Integrating employee groups from separate firms into a combined, well-functioning workforce presents one of the most difficult challenges in a corporate merger. This has particularly been the case in the recent airline mergers in the U.S. that have left three large legacy airlines, namely, American, Delta, and United. Carriers in these mergers have, in some cases, seen years of arbitration and litigation, employee turmoil and labor union decertification, and delays in operational integration and the realization of anticipated merger synergies. In response to this situation, this report introduces seniority_list, a computer-based tool that can be used by unions, employee groups, …

Effectuation As Ineffectual? Applying The 3e Theory-Assessment Framework To A Proposed New Theory Of Entrepreneurship, Richard J. Arend, Hessam Sarooghi, Andrew C. Burkemper Mar 2017

Effectuation As Ineffectual? Applying The 3e Theory-Assessment Framework To A Proposed New Theory Of Entrepreneurship, Richard J. Arend, Hessam Sarooghi, Andrew C. Burkemper

Hessam Sarooghi

Effectuation is a proposed new theory of entrepreneurship, with insufficient empirical testing and critical analysis. Drawing on a new, comprehensive set of theory-building criteria—sourced from and complementing those of Robert Dubin and others—we provide the first formal assessment of effectuation as a theory. We highlight its strengths and weaknesses, leveraging the former to address the latter in five different directions that would build on the existing work to improve this theory. The assessment exercise also displays the value of our assessment framework in guiding the evaluation and development of other existing and future theories in entrepreneurship and management.

Effectuation, Not Being Pragmatic Or Process Theorizing, Remains Ineffectual: Responding To The Commentaries, Richard J. Arend, Hessam Sarooghi, Andrew C. Burkemper

Hessam Sarooghi

We appreciate the opportunity to respond to the provocative Dialogue pieces of Read, Sarasvathy, Dew, and Wiltbank (2016; henceforth, “RSDW”); Reuber, Fischer, and Coviello (2016; henceforth, “RFC”); Gupta, Chiles, and McMullen (2016; henceforth, “GCM”); and Garud and Gehman (2016; henceforth, “GG”), each of which makes several claims in defense of effectuation, as well as describes several ways forward in entrepreneurship- and process-related theorizing. We respond in a manner consistent with the traditional perspective in management theorizing that “good theory is practical” (Lewin, 1945), where “theory is theory” (Simon, 1967; Van de Ven, 1989) based on our discipline’s collective commitment to …

The Influence Of National Stereotypes On Country Image And Product Country Image: A Social Identity And Consumer Culture Theory Approach, Terence Motsi Jan 2017

The Influence Of National Stereotypes On Country Image And Product Country Image: A Social Identity And Consumer Culture Theory Approach, Terence Motsi

Terence Motsi

Multinational companies often make use of country stereotypes in their marketing efforts. Volkswagen used the tagline “That’s the power of German engineering” to utilize the positive stereotype of German efficiency as well as its positive country image. Academic research has recognized the importance of the country of origin cue (COO) in consumer decision making but research addressing the use national stereotypes as an antecedent to COO evaluation is relatively sparse. The stereotype content model (SCM) contends that national stereotypes describe traits associated with a group of people through the dimensions of competence and warmth. Existing research on the antecedents of …

Most successful firms have an abundance of new and old knowledge in their research and development laboratories, and only a fraction is being put into use in new product development. This knowledge is left over from projects that have been killed at different development stages and may actually carry considerable value. In this article, we propose a knowledge bank as a possible solution to preserve and possibly grow this knowledge. It is a self-sustaining institute with minimal or no ongoing effort from the donor company, yet manages the knowledge in a way that protects proprietary interests and actively fosters communication …
