Application Of Probabilistic Model By Rasch Measurement To Establish A Performance Index: A Case Study In Audits On Malaysian Institutions Of Higher Learning, Razimah Abdullah, Rosmawati Abd Halim, Azami Zaharim, Rozeha A Rashid, Mohd Saidfudin Masodi

Razimah Abdullah

Performance measurement has traditionally been determined using historical data to establish the ‘best fit line’. Measuring performance in an appropriate way is vital to ensure valid quality information can be generated for meaningful use. A matter of prime concern in organisational excellence is internal audit, a control mechanism against systems failures. This paper promulgate the attempt of a new approach in establishing a performance measurement based on the Plan-Execute-Report-Monitor (PERM) model, in this case the Audit Performance index; APi. Fakulti Kejuruteraan Elektrik, UTM (FKE) is certified to ISO9001:2000 and is subjected to audit of their engineering program effectiveness at planned …

Sample Selection And Theory Development: Implications Of Firms' Varying Abilities To Appropriately Select New Ventures, Arthurs Kalnins Oct 2007

Sample Selection And Theory Development: Implications Of Firms' Varying Abilities To Appropriately Select New Ventures, Arthurs Kalnins

Arturs Kalnins

I highlight the need to consider sample selection when developing theory. When a sample is the result of a selection process, the process may be (1) generating empirical relationships consistent with a theoretical explanation that plays no causal role or (2) canceling out an empirical relationship actually generated by a causal process associated with a proposed theory. I argue that firms' varying abilities to appropriately select new ventures and select in or out of samples of such investments can lead to empirical misinterpretation and inappropriate theoretical conclusions.

The Economic Pay-Offs To Informal Training: Evidence From Routine Service Work, Rosemary Batt Sep 2007

The Economic Pay-Offs To Informal Training: Evidence From Routine Service Work, Rosemary Batt

Rosemary Batt

This study examines the relationship between informal training and job performance among 2,803 telephone operators in a large unionized U.S. telecommunications company. The authors analyze individual-level data on monthly training hours and job performance over a five-month period in 2001 as provided by the company's electronic monitoring system. The results indicate that the receipt of informal training was associated with higher productivity over time, when unobserved individual heterogeneity is taken into account. Workers with lower pre-training proficiency showed greater improvements over time than did those with higher pre-training proficiency. Finally, whether the trainer was a supervisor or a peer also …

Mainstreaming And Integrating The Substance And Spectacle Of Scholar-Baller: A New Game Plan For The Ncaa, Higher Education And Society, Keith Harrison Aug 2007

Mainstreaming And Integrating The Substance And Spectacle Of Scholar-Baller: A New Game Plan For The Ncaa, Higher Education And Society, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

The purpose of this chapter is to theoretically and empirically capture the cultural divide between education and sport and entertainment in American society. The NCAA Academic Reform Movement has evolved from holding individuals accountable to presently monitoring institutions and their retention and graduation success of college student athletes. This movement will require a deeper examination of how culture influences academic attitudes and lifelong learning. Based on empirical data from different methodologies, this chapter proposes that student athletes; especially African American males, are often stereotyped with few strategies to empower their academic and athletic identities. The Scholar-Baller Paradigm is designed to …

An Empirical Investigation Of The Antecedents, Behaviors, And Outcomes Of Bad Leadership, Anthony Erickson, James Shaw, Zha Agabe Jul 2007

An Empirical Investigation Of The Antecedents, Behaviors, And Outcomes Of Bad Leadership, Anthony Erickson, James Shaw, Zha Agabe

James B Shaw

This exploratory study identifies actions and behaviours which subordinates attribute to ‘bad leadership’ and explores the implications these factors have for organizations. Data was obtained through a web-based survey that generated 335 respondents who completed at least some of the questions. Results identified the prevalence of bad leaders; behaviours causing a leader to be perceived as bad; the impact of bad leaders on the employee and organisation; whether these bad leaders had always been bad; and what happened to the bad leader. An interesting discovery was that the majority of bad leaders were either promoted or rewarded by the organization.

Faculty And Male Student Athletes In Higher Education: Racial Differences In The Environmental Predictors Of Academic Achievement, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

Studies have examined the impact of environmental variables on academic achievement among student athletes in the revenue-generating sports of men’s basketball and football. However, while evidence concerning the positive impact of male student athlete and faculty interaction is virtually unequivocal, we are not certain whether the benefits accruing from particular types of interaction vary across different racial/ethnic groups. This study explores the relationship between male Black and White student athletes and faculty as well as the impact of specific forms of student athlete– faculty interaction on academic achievement. Data are drawn from the Cooperative Institutional Research Program’s 2000 Freshman Survey …

Globalization Of R&D And Developing Countries, Arash Golnam, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Ali Ghazizadeh

Nader Ale Ebrahim

Reflecting a broader trend towards the off shoring of services, a number of developing countries are attracting foreign direct investment in research and development. Transnational corporations, including the ones headquartered in developed countries, are selecting developing countries as locations for such activities. With the off shoring of research and development, firms aim to access the skills of new locations, adapting products to local markets and reducing their costs, in response to competitive pressures, technological changes and a more liberal trade and investment environment. In particular, information and communication technologies have had a profound effect on the way economic activities, including …

R&D Management In Iran, Opportunities And Threats, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Ali Ghazizadeh, Arash Golnam, Hamid Tahbaz Tavakoli

Nader Ale Ebrahim

Research and Development (R&D) management in Iran has faced many barriers and obstacles, in which R&D units are considered as the basic core of the product development and innovation. Due to structural shortcomings, a great number of organizations and industries have not yet been able to position themselves in the market. There are about 1141 R&D units throughout Iran, due to the geographical decentralization of these units this paper considers and analyzes the R&D case study in one of the provinces located in the north part of Iran, and the findings can be generalized to the other industrialized areas and …

Quality systems audit is classified as Value for Money audit. Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (FKE) Skudai subscribed to ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System (QMS) since 2004. Effective internal audit is required to be carried out at planned intervals to determine whether the teaching-learning process is effectively implemented and maintained. This paper describes the use of Plan-Execute-Report-Monitor (PERM) model to ensure the effectiveness of such audits. It has been observed that the attrition rate among engineering students is higher during the first three years of five years undergraduate electrical engineering program. Initiatives taken to improve the teaching-learning process …

The Challenges Of Inter-Organizational Business Process Design – A Research Agenda, Christine Legner, Kristin Wende Feb 2007

The Challenges Of Inter-Organizational Business Process Design – A Research Agenda, Christine Legner, Kristin Wende

Hubert Oesterle

Given the increasing importance of value chain collaboration, business processes need to be more closely aligned across organizational boundaries. Hence, business process modeling and design have to be enhanced and extended to cope with inter-organizational business relationships. Among the challenges that arise are interdependencies between internal and external processes, different process logic and terminology, missing clarification of responsibilities and confidentiality issues. This paper analyzes existing approaches to business process modeling, workflow management and B2B standardization with regard to the specific requirements concerning inter-organizational business process design. It extracts the relevant concepts addressing these requirements and draws up an agenda for …

Soa Adoption In Practice - Findings From Early Soa Implementations, Christine Legner, Roger Heutschi Feb 2007

Soa Adoption In Practice - Findings From Early Soa Implementations, Christine Legner, Roger Heutschi

Hubert Oesterle

Despite the wide range of advantages which many authors associate with the introduction of a service-oriented architecture (SOA), comprehensive SOA implementations continue to be scarce in practice. Consequently, questions arise as to how the concept is adapted in practice. This paper compares the scientific view of SOA concepts with initial practical experience from first SOA implementations. Based on an SOA model which is derived from recent SOA publications it examines SOA realization in four case studies. From the cross-case analysis, the authors derive three focus areas of SOA adoption, a prioritization of SOA design principles as well as typical steps …

Board Interlocking Strategies In Emerging Markets: The Case Of Chile, Alfredo Enrione, Fernanzdo Zerboni

Alfredo Enrione

Interlocking directorates is a widely studied, applied measure of governance practice. Most of the research has been limited to data from developed countries and studies interlocking as an explanatory variable of other governance constructs. This work conceptualizes interlocking as a rational decision of the owner/controller of a company, as a dependent variable of board’s design, and applies the concepts in an emerging market business environment. We found significant associations between interlocking and firm characteristics such as ownership structure, industry and regulation. We finally draw some conclusions on the direct application of corporate governance theories in developing countries.
