Mergers And Acquisitions - The Directors' View, Mark E. Pickering Nov 2002

Mergers And Acquisitions - The Directors' View, Mark E. Pickering

Mark E Pickering

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) can be an extremely valuable tool to transform organisations and to accelerate growth strategies. However, poorly conceived and implemented acquisitions can result in significant distraction, substantial financial write-offs and, in extreme cases, put the acquirer’s future in jeopardy. Directors play an important role in the M&A decision process and should delve into key components of proposed acquisitions to improve M&A outcomes.

Nigeria’S Transformation Agenda: The Management And Leadership Challenges, Prof Ben C Osisioma Nov 2002

Nigeria’S Transformation Agenda: The Management And Leadership Challenges, Prof Ben C Osisioma

Prof Ben Chuka Osisioma

Nigeria’s President won the 2011 Federal Government elections on the grounds well of popular support, and the promise of a transformation agenda. Transformation is a strong word that portends a radical, structural and fundamental reappraisal of the basic assumptions that underlie our reforms and developmental efforts. The challenge before government is how to move the nation away from an oil-dominated economy, institute the basics for a private-sector driven economy, build the local economy on international best practices, transform a passive oil industry to a more proactive one, and restructure the country along the lines of a more decentralized federalism. But …

Hrm As Chameleon: Is Soft Hrm Rhetoric Used To Disguise An Increase In Managment Control?, Carol Gill Jul 2002

Hrm As Chameleon: Is Soft Hrm Rhetoric Used To Disguise An Increase In Managment Control?, Carol Gill

Carol Gill

The Critical Perspective proposes that HRM is ineffective, suggesting that only a name change differentiates HRM and its precursor Personnel. Simultaneously, it presents HRM as a predator that uses rhetoric to disguise an increase in management control. This research examines these propositions from the Critical Perspective through a survey sent to Human Resource Managers in 896 large, Australian organizations. The results challenge the propositions of the Critical Perspective indicating that HRM has been implemented in rhetoric and reality. The results also show that HRM does not manipulate the workforce to increase management control by using soft rhetoric to obscure hard …

The Sa Guide To Tax-Efficient Cars: A Study On How To Drive More For Less, David Cattell Jan 2002

The Sa Guide To Tax-Efficient Cars: A Study On How To Drive More For Less, David Cattell

David Cattell

This book delves deeply into the issues surrounding company cars and car allowances. It is a specialist publication that looks to give perspective and insight by contemplating the recent history of the legislation governing the taxes in this area, how they've evolved and where we can imagine them to be headed. It looks at a quantitative assessment of the current laws, and by doing it highlights the opportunities and pitfalls that arise, whether they've been created by those who write the laws by way of their intent or (more likely) by their neglect.

Innovations In Competitive Manufacturing, Paul Swamidass

Paul Swamidass

Competitive manufacturing in the US was made possible by the progress made in a number of areas. For example, progress in competitive manufacturing is attributable to advances in the strategic use if manufacturing, cellular manufacturing, lean manufacturing, flexible automation, total quality management, supply chain management, design for manufacturing, mass customization, improved costing, and so on.

Pressured by competition, US manufacturers began the journey to competitive manufacturing in the late seventies; their success brought revolutionary changes to US manufacturing.

The book is arranged in 13 different chapters, each covering a major subject within manufacturing management. Each chapter consists of one or …

African Americans’ Perceptions Of Workplace Equity: A Starting Point, Dan K. Hibbler Ph.D. Dec 2001

African Americans’ Perceptions Of Workplace Equity: A Starting Point, Dan K. Hibbler Ph.D.

Dan K Hibbler Ph.D.

For the past several decades, leisure researchers have investigated the impact that race has on leisure behavior and preferences, but there remains a paucity of research that addresses the issue of race in the leisure services workplace. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of inequity, discrimination, and promotion opportunities among African Americans in the field of public parks and recreation. The study was conducted in multiple phases, and all included African Americans who were working for public recreation agencies in a midwestern state. First, telephone interviews were conducted with 11 African American middle managers. A …

Scholar Or Baller In American Higher Education? A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment Of The Studentathlete's Mindset, Keith Harrison Dec 2001

Scholar Or Baller In American Higher Education? A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment Of The Studentathlete's Mindset, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

Eminent scholar Harry Edwards (2000) has articulated three major realities of African American males in sports: a) The presumption of innate, race-linked black athletic superiority and intellectual deficiency; b) media propaganda portraying sports as a broadly accessible route to African American social and economic mobility; and c) a lack of comparably visible, high-prestige African American role models beyond the sports arena. Driven by labeling theory (Becker, 1963; Goffman, 1959), eight African American male student athletes were surveyed and interviewed. The last two points of Edwards' scholarship were investigated. "We have pretty good historical data and quantitative data about African American …
