The Funding Structure Of The Norwegian Sport And Physical Activity System, Bryn Jones, Winston Wing Hong To, Darwin Semotiuk
The Funding Structure Of The Norwegian Sport And Physical Activity System, Bryn Jones, Winston Wing Hong To, Darwin Semotiuk
Winston Wing Hong To
Norway is a country that has simultaneously developed a successful high performance and elite sport (HPS) program, as well as a physical activity program designed for all of its citizens. Limited resources make it challenging for most countries to balance a “sport for all” and “high performance or elite sport development” policy. Norway is generally held to be one of few countries in the world that has been able to achieve such a balance despite having a small population (4.5 million) and having limited financial resources (1.5 Billion Norwegian Krone (kr)) (Semotiuk, 2009). Though Norwegian sport policy is highly regarded …

The Sports Policy Factors Leading to International Sporting Success (SPLISS), a comparative high performance and elite sport (HPS) model, has identified nine distinct pillars that contribute to the success of a country’s HPS system. The study was originally conducted in 2003 with seven nations from Europe and North America. Beginning in 2009, the study was repeated and expanded to include 17 nations from North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. While the SPLISS study was designed to examine and compare countries’ HPS systems, the aim of this research is to compare the intra-country results of Canadian athletes, coaches, and …

Extending The Project Management Skillset To Encompass Change Implementation, Lynn Crawford
Extending The Project Management Skillset To Encompass Change Implementation, Lynn Crawford
Lynn Crawford
Project management standards address change control but are largely silent on change implementation. As the majority of projects involve some degree of organizational or behavioural change, and as project management is now applied to implementation of organisational changes as a specific project type, extension of coverage to recognise specific activities and competencies involved in effective change implementation should be considered in review of project management standards. As input to such a review, this paper presents results of research investigating the project and change implementation practices used, in practice, on projects requiring varying degrees of organizational and behavioural change.
Comparing Apples With Apples: Aligning Project Management Capability With Corporate Strategy, Lynn Crawford
Comparing Apples With Apples: Aligning Project Management Capability With Corporate Strategy, Lynn Crawford
Lynn Crawford
It makes little sense for an organization to invest in project management systems that are not directly suited to the nature of their business yet they need some form of guidance to tell them what good looks like. Generic project management maturity models can be a useful starting point but they take no account of differences in context and using them is like comparing apples with oranges. This paper presents results of research that investigates differences in strategic drivers and associated project management practices and outcomes between industries. Results of this research provide input to development of more compelling and …
A Vision For A Longer-Term Future: From Project Managers To “Synthesists”?, Alan Stretton, Lynn Crawford
A Vision For A Longer-Term Future: From Project Managers To “Synthesists”?, Alan Stretton, Lynn Crawford
Lynn Crawford
This paper first gives a snapshot of how some articulate contributors to a broader future-oriented non-management literature perceive the growth of specialization of avocations/ professions. A primary drawback is seen to be a resultant lack of people who are fluent in the language of many different disciplines, and who have the ability to expertly integrate them to achieve broader societal goals – i.e. “synthesists”.Project managers essentially integrate the contributions of many varied disciplines to achieve beneficial outcomes. Therefore project management appears to be extremely well placed to broaden its perspectives, and to develop and consolidate a role as “synthesists” in …
Dispersed Leadership: Exploring The Impact Of Antecedent Forms Of Power Using A Communicative Framework, Ray Gordon
Dispersed Leadership: Exploring The Impact Of Antecedent Forms Of Power Using A Communicative Framework, Ray Gordon
Ray Gordon
This article presents an account of a police organization's attempt to implement what senior officers described as a dispersed leadership initiative. A communicative framework is used to show how a particular historically constituted discourse is embedded in the communicative actions of those officers who participated in the study. Analysis of the effects of this discourse reveals how the organization's dispersion of leadership, although on the surface representing a new and successful endeavor, is rendered problematic by what the article terms antecedent forms of power.
Multi-Perspective Performance Reporting Systems, Continuous Improvement Systems And Organisational Performance, Errol Iselin, John Sands, Lokman Mia
Multi-Perspective Performance Reporting Systems, Continuous Improvement Systems And Organisational Performance, Errol Iselin, John Sands, Lokman Mia
Errol Iselin
The use of multi-perspective performance reporting systems (MPRS) such as the balanced scorecard (BSC), is widespread. This study’s motivation comes from the importance of these systems and the lack of knowledge about them. Continuous improvement systems (CIS) are another management innovation. CIS constantly look for ways to improve performance and are used in conjunction with performance reporting systems. The research objectives were to study MPRS users and discover whether the use of CIS improved organisational performance. It was found that the use of CIS by MPRS users was positively associated with performance. The implications of these findings for managers were …

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to review - from the perspective of nascent academic practitioners - the promise and challenges of service-learning as an instructional methodology. The paper is contextualized in terms of preparing students of business and management with the requisite skills for coping and thriving in the unknowns of the unscripted future. Design/methodology/approach - The approach is a review of the context of the unscripted future and the considerations involved in determining the viability and appropriateness of service-learning from the perspective of faculty who have not previously used this approach. Findings - Although there are …
Classification Of Clients Of Financial Firms: From Comparative Law Perspective, Christopher Chao-Hung Chen
Classification Of Clients Of Financial Firms: From Comparative Law Perspective, Christopher Chao-Hung Chen
Christopher Chao-hung Chen
The purpose of this article is to examine current regulations under Taiwan law with regard to classification of clients of financial firms in Taiwan from the perspective of comparative law. After comparing with relevant laws in the EU, UK, USA, Hong Kong, and Singapore, this article argues that there are certain points worth further consideration and revision under Taiwan law: first, the level of current regulation in Taiwan and its scope are rather limited compared with foreign laws; secondly, it is necessary to introduce other standards than mere ‘total assets’ in order to determine a ‘large’ enterprise; and thirdly, current …

The Application Of Social/Political Theories To The Spliss (Sport Policy Factors Leading To International Sporting Success) Model, Winston Wing Hong To, Bryn Jones, Juliann Desjardins, Darwin Semotiuk
Winston Wing Hong To
This research focuses if a sociocultural theory such as the stakeholder theory or social value theory can be applicable to enhance the theoretical explanation of the SPLISS (Sport Policy Factors Leading to International Sporting Success) model. The SPLISS model is a comparative high performance sport (HPS) model which was created by researchers from Belgium, United Kingdom, and Netherlands in 2002 with the purpose of seeking which factors will lead countries to international sporting success (e.g. Olympics, Paralympics, World Championships) (Legg & DeBosscher, nd). A comparative HPS model is a research model that has a set of ingredients composed by academic …
An Investigation Of The Prevalence Of Quantitative Research Studies Within The Sociocultural Area Of Sport, Winston Wing Hong To
An Investigation Of The Prevalence Of Quantitative Research Studies Within The Sociocultural Area Of Sport, Winston Wing Hong To
Winston Wing Hong To
This research study is to investigate if there is a prevalence of academic quantitative research studies within the sociocultural area of sport. Sociocultural of sport is defined by Harris (1989) in two levels, which were: "Suited Up Level": expressive meanings that sports have for people who encounter them, "Stripped Down Level": social structures within and beyond sport. Sociocultural of sport from her definition needs to encompass both levels when analyzing the cultural and social underpinnings of sport.
The research study looks to answer how much have sport sociologists used quantitative research methodology within their academic work within the sociocultural area …
