Icarus In The Boardroom, Introduction, David A. Skeel Jr. Dec 2004

Icarus In The Boardroom, Introduction, David A. Skeel Jr.

All Faculty Scholarship

Americans have always loved risk takers. Like the Icarus of ancient Greek lore, however, even the most talented entrepreneurs can overstep their bounds. All too often, the very qualities that make Icaran executives special - self-confidence, visionary insight, and extreme competitiveness - spur them to take misguided and even illegal chances. The Icaran failure of an ordinary entrepreneur isn't headline news. But put Icarus in the corporate boardroom and - as this book vividly demonstrates - the ripple effects can be profound. Ever since the first large-scale corporations emerged in the nineteenth century, their ability to tap huge amounts of …

The Acculturation Of Middle Income Hispanic Households, Cecilia Maria Alvarez Nov 2004

The Acculturation Of Middle Income Hispanic Households, Cecilia Maria Alvarez

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research on the consumer behavior of the Hispanic population has recently attracted the attention of marketing practitioners as well as researchers. This study's purpose was to develop a model and scales to examine the acculturation process of Hispanic consumers with income levels of $35,000 and above, and its effects on their consumer behavior. The proposed model defined acculturation as a bilinear and multidimensional change process, measuring consumers' selective change process in four dimensions: language preference, Hispanic identification, American identification, and familism. A national sample of 653 consumers was analyzed. The scales developed for testing the model showed good to high …

Entrepreneurial Orientation As A Basis For Classification Within A Service Industry: The Case Of Retail Pharmacy Industry, Thanigavelan Jambulingam, Ravi Kathuria, William R. Doucette Nov 2004

Entrepreneurial Orientation As A Basis For Classification Within A Service Industry: The Case Of Retail Pharmacy Industry, Thanigavelan Jambulingam, Ravi Kathuria, William R. Doucette

Business Faculty Articles and Research

To date, service classification research has primarily taken a macro view, creating service typologies or taxonomies by using dimensions such as customer contact or degree of labor intensity. Such classification schemes, though helpful in deciphering critical management issues and positioning strategies between service industries, tend to treat an entire industry, such as airlines, as a single homogenous entity. However, organizations in the same industry often use intangible resources, such as entrepreneurial orientation processes, to compete with one another. Resource-advantage theory suggests that organizations utilize intangible resources to build long-term strategies and a sustainable competitive advantage leading to superior performance. We …

Comparative Cost Analysis Of Crrt In Icu/Ccu Patients Undergoing Cardiovascular Surgery Vs. Other Procedures At A Texas Hospital, Tejaswi Belavadi, Alberto Coustasse, Douglas Mains, Antonio A. Rene

Management Faculty Research

The purpose of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of hospital costs incurred by patients undergoing Cardiovascular Surgery (CVS) and patients undergoing other medical procedures who received Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) in a teaching hospital. A total of 117 patients were identified through review of medical charts for the period of January 1999 to August 2002. Twenty one percent of them were identified having CVS. Eighty-eight percent of the CVS patients admitted to the ICU for CRRT died compared to 67% for non-CVS patients (p=0.047). Average actual costs of hospitalization were $47,225 for CVS patients and $51,724 …

Third Extrusion Project: Project Analysis, Ingrid Suarez

Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects

This paper uses a case study approach to analyze the Third Extrusion Project (TEP) in Cerro Matoso S.A (CMSA). The TEP was chosen to be analyzed because of the importance to the company, the quality of the project management, and the impact in CMSA’s business. The analysis was focused on the managerial and organizational aspects, rather than on technical topics. It was based on the Strategic Project Leadership framework proposed by Dr. Aaron Shedar.

BHP Billiton, the parent organization of CMSA, is one of the world’s premier mining companies. Its project management office aims to ensure that the project management …

Designing And Implementing A Blended Learning Approach To Executive Scm Education: A Case Study From Ireland, John Mee, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

The National Institute for Transport and Logistics (NITL) is Ireland’s centre of excellence for supply chain management (SCM). As part of its mission to promote the development of supply chain expertise in Irish business, it designs and delivers executive modular learning programmes. In 2004, as part of a drive to create more flexible learning opportunities for course participants, NITL designed and implemented an eLearning programme, which involved converting traditionally tutored modules to online modules. This paper describes the rationale behind this initiative and the significance of technology as an enabling tool for executive education, as well as detailing the design …

Punishment: Benefits, Risks, And Alternatives In A Business Setting, Chris Vaden Oct 2004

Punishment: Benefits, Risks, And Alternatives In A Business Setting, Chris Vaden

Senior Honors Theses

Punishment is utilized in many settings in the world today, but it is continually getting more negative responses for its use in the workplace. Punishment's main use is to decrease the occurrence of a behavior that is undesirable. In a business setting, this would most likely be a behavior that is a violation of policy or unsatisfactory work performance. A comparison of the positive aspects of punishment with its negative features, by utilizing information provided by scholarly journals and websites along with a survey of 31 employees, has yielded the results that there may be a better alternative to punishment.

B2b E-Marketplace In The Procurement Supply Chain Of Airlines: A Strategic Direction For The Future?, Claudia-Maria Wagner, Austin Smyth, Edward Sweeney Sep 2004

B2b E-Marketplace In The Procurement Supply Chain Of Airlines: A Strategic Direction For The Future?, Claudia-Maria Wagner, Austin Smyth, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

With the airline industry experiencing a global economic downturn, B2B e-Business is
becoming more and more the focus of airlines’ strategies. More recently, airlines have studied
intensively the potential of joint-procurement possibilities and have taken measures in creating
consortia-led B2B e-Marketplaces as mediators for aggregating demand and to facilitate transactions.
In academic literature, limited academic research has been undertaken in exploring the value creation of B2B e-Marketplace models in the aviation industry. The aim is to conduct a theoretical analysis to explore whether or not e-Marketplaces have the potential to add value to procurement in the aviation industry. The research …

The Role Of Supply Chain Management In Irish Enterprise Strategy Development: A Three-Dimensional Approach, Ciaran Finn, Edward Sweeney Sep 2004

The Role Of Supply Chain Management In Irish Enterprise Strategy Development: A Three-Dimensional Approach, Ciaran Finn, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

The Irish economy has grown strongly in recent years. This, combined with other factors in the
international trading environment, has sharpened the focus on the need for innovative strategies at a
national level which can contribute positively from an enterprise strategy development perspective. As
traditional manufacturing activity has migrated to lower labour cost economies questions have been
raised concerning the role of supply chain management (SCM) in the evolving Irish business
environment. This paper describes some of the main drivers in terms of both SCM and the changing economic and business environment. It goes on to propose a three-dimensional approach …

Towards A Conceptual Framework Of Electronic Purchasing Consortia, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth Sep 2004

Towards A Conceptual Framework Of Electronic Purchasing Consortia, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth

Conference papers

In supply chain management literature, there has been little empirical research on consortium
purchasing focusing on a detailed analysis of information and communication (ICT) based
procurement strategies. Based on the exploration of academic literature and two surveys among
purchasing organisations as well as e-Marketplaces / procurement service providers (PSPs) in the
automotive and electronics industry sectors, the research methodology assesses the overall
statement: ‘Effective participation in electronic purchasing consortia (EPC) has the potential to
enhance competitive advantage. Implementation requires a clear and detailed understanding of the
major process structures and drivers, based upon the technology-organisation-environment
framework’. Key factors and structures …

From 3lsp (Third Party Logistics Service Provider) To 4lsp (Fourth Party Logistics Service Provider). A Case Study From Ireland, John Mee, Edward Sweeney Sep 2004

From 3lsp (Third Party Logistics Service Provider) To 4lsp (Fourth Party Logistics Service Provider). A Case Study From Ireland, John Mee, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

Increased competition, geographically expanded marketplaces, technology replication and an
ever discerning consumer base, are reasons why companies need to regularly reappraise
their competencies in terms of activities and functions they perform themselves. Where viable
alternatives exist, companies should consider outsourcing of non-core activities and functions.
Within SCM (Supply Chain Management) it could be preferable if a “one stop shop” existed
for companies seeking to outsource functions identified as non-core. “Traditionally” structured
LSP’s who have concentrated their service offer around providing warehousing and transport
activities are potentially at a crossroads – clients and potential clients requiring “new” services
which could increase …

When And How Trustworthiness Matters: Knowledge Transfer And The Moderating Effect Of Causal Ambiguity, Robert J. Jensen, Gabriel Szulanski, Rossella Cappetta Sep 2004

When And How Trustworthiness Matters: Knowledge Transfer And The Moderating Effect Of Causal Ambiguity, Robert J. Jensen, Gabriel Szulanski, Rossella Cappetta

Faculty Publications

The recognition that better use of existing internal knowledge could enhance survival chances or organizations has spawned substantial interest in the transferability of routinized, experiential learning to additional settings within the organization Previous research has established that trustworthiness of the source enhances such knowledge transfer. More recent work, however, suggests that this may not always be the case. Yet, little systematic attention has been paid to moderating conditions. The major purpose of this paper is to identify a moderator, causal ambiguity, which delineates the conditions as to when and how a recipient's perception of the trustworthiness of a source affects …

A Social Exchange Model Of Subordinate's Trust In Supervisors, Wei Hua Sep 2004

A Social Exchange Model Of Subordinate's Trust In Supervisors, Wei Hua

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study demonstrates how the subordinate’s defensiveness predicts perception of managerial behaviors, which in turn leads to trust in supervisors. From a social information processing perspective, defensiveness, the affective reaction to uncertainty and vulnerability, serves as the frame subordinates use to decode and evaluate managerial behaviors. Trust in supervisors is anchored in this perception. A two-group analysis in Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is used to test this model by a Chinese and a US sample
