Participants in the United Nations Global Compact (UN Global Compact or GC) have the option to join Global Compact Local Networks (GCLNs), which are formed voluntarily by participants to promote the GC and its principles at the local level and to deepen their learning experience in the area of corporate social responsibility (CSR) by facilitating collaboration and collective action, grounded in local cultures and communities. While the effect of technological innovations (TI) on firm performance is established, performance contributions of management innovations (MI) is as yet undetermined. Theoretical discourse on the motivation for the adoption of MIs questions their performance outcome, and an integration of empirical research of the MI-performance relationship is lacking. This study thus examines three questions: (1) is the adoption of MI beneficial to organizations; (2) is the impact of MI on performance at par with that of TI; and (3) what are the potential sources of inconsistency in the MI-performance relationship? Until now, the full story has lain buried in archival documents, newspaper articles, and the memories of those who experienced it firsthand. After a brief flurry of monographs on business and organizational aspects of GIS in the 1990s, little attention has been paid to a systematic approach in support of GIS Program management. Most existing efforts in both public and private enterprises are based on anecdotal evidence. This chapter outlines a range of research questions and the beginning efforts to study modern GIS management practices and help develop a body of knowledge that can be used for the accreditation of GIS Programs and the certification of GIS Program managers.
