More than 3,000 microfinancing institutions (MFIs) in developing countries provide financial assistance to the needy poor who are denied access to institutional credit from other sources. This study’s motivation comes from the importance of MFIs and the lack of knowledge about them. Adopting the balanced scorecard (BSC) model, this exploratory study investigates the critical performance measures that MFIs need to emphasize in their performance reporting to drive high performance. The study first argues that four dimensions (sustainability, increasing the outreach, depth of outreach, and portfolio at risk) are needed to measure the performance of MFIs, and then analyzes the impact …

Corporate Social Responsibility: Why Bother?, Lars Isaksson, Timothy Kiessling, Michael Harvey
Lars Isaksson
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is not a new concept, but unfortunately has been defined in so many ways, it is often misinterpreted. In fact it has had 40 years to evolve from a somewhat infant concept to a successful managerial tool to build a company's reputation in the global market arena. Corporate social responsibility has become corporate strategic responsibility - an imperative element of corporate global business strategies. Many leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, executives and politicians now recognize CSR's potential for differentiation and positioning in the global marketplace. In the 21st century, we find CSR to have a remarkable acceptance among …
Transnational Diaspora Entrepreneurship In Emerging Markets: Bridging Institutional Divides, Liesl Riddle, George Hrivnak, Tjai Nielsen
Transnational Diaspora Entrepreneurship In Emerging Markets: Bridging Institutional Divides, Liesl Riddle, George Hrivnak, Tjai Nielsen
George Hrivnak
Transnational diasporan entrepreneurs are migrants and their descendants who establish entrepreneurial activities that span the national business environments of their countries of origin and countries of residence. We explore how business incubators contribute to the economic development of emerging markets by organizing their programs to bridge the institutional divides that transnational diaspora entrepreneurs face when establishing their multi-territorial ventures in these markets. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork conducted in the Netherlands during 2007, we present the case study of IntEnt, an incubator providing services exclusively to transnational diasporan entrepreneurs. We apply Bergek and Norrman's (2008) assessment framework to this case, examining …

We show here that adventure tourism leads to transfer of tacit knowledge between international visitors and local residents in developing destinations; and that motivations for the locals include money and employment, social capital, and individual enjoyment. Over the past half century, adventure tourism has grown from decentralised domestic outdoor recreation, to a large international commercial industry. Many tours bring urban clients from developed nations to rural areas in developing nations, where there are icon sites for specific adventure activities (Buckley, 2010).

Purpose – The purpose of the development of the paper was due to the seemingly endless searching for deans to replace the former dean of three to four years. Design/methodology/approach – The paper was developed around the present relevant secondary data. Findings – The key findings of the paper were that deans were being replaced due to the difference in expectation of the various constituents (e.g. students, faculty, administration, parents) in the performance of the SBA. Research limitations/implications – Limitations of the study were not providing primary data to support the theory based hypotheses of the study. Practical implications – …

This paper argues that business school scholarship can be seen as the example par excellence of what we are calling extreme neo-liberalism. By extreme neo-liberalism we mean the coexistence in the same sphere of extreme externalization of costs and extreme regulation of the sources of value. We argue that this condition is most obvious in the research audits conducted in Britain, and spreading globally, audits that record both the extreme externalization in business scholarship of all the sources of the wealth expropriated by business, and at the same time, regulate the very labour that produces this extreme self-regulation. Although this …

Through The Lens Of The Other: Implementing Liberal Management Education, Stephen Matthias Harney, Howard Thomas, Thomas Gene Estad
Stephen Matthias Harney
The purpose of this paper is to explore the prerequisite conditions for implementing a liberal management education and for fostering ethical students using examples from the core curriculum at Singapore Management University (SMU).
Beginning with a reading of the Carnegie Foundation's Rethinking Undergraduate Business Education: liberal learning for the professions (2011), the paper examines the contribution and limits of the findings and recommendations before discussing the place of the liberal arts in the modern university and describing a case study of liberal management education in process at SMU. It concludes with a reading of the work of Emmanuel Levinas and …
Rethinking Risk-Based Information Security, Herbert Mattord
Rethinking Risk-Based Information Security, Herbert Mattord
Herbert J. Mattord
The information security discipline has a common body of knowledge comprised of many facts, techniques, and ways for its practitioners to accomplish the objectives of securing the information assets of the companies by which they are employed. Sometimes these practitioners simply do things the way they have always been done. Perhaps some of the practices need to be reexamined. One that needs attention is the way that risk-based decision making is applied in places that it may not improve the outcomes of the problems being addressed.

Improving Bid Efficiency For Humanitarian Food Aid Procurement, Aniruddha Bagchi, Jomon Aliyas Paul, Michael J. Maloni
Improving Bid Efficiency For Humanitarian Food Aid Procurement, Aniruddha Bagchi, Jomon Aliyas Paul, Michael J. Maloni
Jomon A. Paul
The competitive bid process used by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to procure food supplies and transportation services for humanitarian food aid is subject to bidder gaming that can increase prices and deter competition. Additionally, suppliers and carriers are matched after bid submission, preventing synergies from coordinated planning. Given these concerns, we determine the optimal auction mechanism to minimize gaming then justify pre-bid planning between suppliers and carriers using properties of the cost distribution functions. We operationalize these changes with a uniform price auction. The improved mechanism should deter gaming, enhance bid participation, and increase delivered food aid volumes.
Accountability And Stewardship Of Family Business Entities, Keith Duncan, Ken Moores
Accountability And Stewardship Of Family Business Entities, Keith Duncan, Ken Moores
Keith Duncan
This chapter explores whether current accounting technology fulfils the stewardship and accountability information needs of family business owners. As the influences on contemporary accounting are both conceptual and contextual we frame our discussion in terms of both the knowledge foundations of accounting, as informed by various conceptions of the firm, and stakeholder theory. We posit that if prevailing conceptions of the firm impact the knowledge foundations of accounting, and subsequently the nature and form of accounting practice, then it is the conceptions of influential stakeholders that can define the accounting change agenda and affect contemporary accounting practice. We use extant …
A Contingency Theory Of Collective Action In Market Formation, Brandon Lee, Jeroen Struben
A Contingency Theory Of Collective Action In Market Formation, Brandon Lee, Jeroen Struben
Brandon Lee
We develop a novel analytical framework to study the role of collective action in the formation of new markets. Using supply and demand uncertainty as two central dimensions underlying all market formation efforts, we theorize under what conditions collective action is necessary for the successful formation of a market and examine the role and form of coordination. To do this, we identify tactics utilized by actors seeking to form a new market and three important contingency factors that impact formation success: returns to contributions, substitutability of contributions, and interest heterogeneity. Our findings have implications for organization theory, economic sociology, and …

Theories For Competitive Advantage, Hui-Ling Wang
Theories For Competitive Advantage, Hui-Ling Wang
Hui-Ling Wang
Introduction Competitive advantage is obtained when an organisation develops or acquires a set of attributes (or executes actions) that allow it to outperform its competitors. The development of theories that help explain competitive advantage has occupied the attention of the management community for the better part of half a century. This chapter aims to provide an overview of the key theories in this space. The overview will span a long timeline, starting from the 1960s to formulations that were introduced in mid-2013. In the early period, there were two dominant theories of competitive advantage: the Market-Based View (MBV) and the …
