A Sacramental Viewing Of 'Atonement': The Movie, Vaughan S. Roberts May 2008

A Sacramental Viewing Of 'Atonement': The Movie, Vaughan S. Roberts

Vaughan S Roberts

The movie version of Ian McEwan’s novel Atonement, directed by Joe Wright, raises interesting questions about implicit sacraments in films. This presentation explores how the film of Atonement develops and introduces Christian themes into the storyline and the way in which this might reflect more widely upon the place of Christianity in a secular world. A version was written up for the journal Implicit Religion and can be found here https://www.equinoxpub.com/journals/index.php/IR/article/view/6300

Ethnic Democracy And Its Ambiguities: The Case Of The Needle Trade Unions, Gerd Korman May 2008

Ethnic Democracy And Its Ambiguities: The Case Of The Needle Trade Unions, Gerd Korman

Gerd Korman

[Excerpt] During the years between World War I and World War II the conduct among well-known Jewish labor leaders seems to have foreshadowed events in the history of America’s nationality following the tumult of the 1960’s. In the 1920’s and 1930’s America’s elected or appointed officials still used a pecking order based on assumed inequalities of race, ethnicity, and gender in making policy decisions. They presumed that their private interests, those of the “insiders,” the “leading groups,” or “controlling minorities,” were the only appropriate ones for determining public policy. It was then, especially in the Depression years, when the New …

Silence In America Textbooks, Gerd Korman

Gerd Korman

[Excerpt] Although more than two decades separate us from the time when the Allied forces revealed the depth and dimensions of the Nazi horror, America’s textbook-writing historians still do not understand the demands the death camps place on each of them as scholar and as educator of the young in our public schools and universities. They continue to write in the tradition that prepared no one for the catastrophe, a tradition that still prevents us from attempting to assess and understand what happened; for with precious few exceptions they write of the years before 1945 as if the 1930’s and …

Bottom-Up Organizing In The Trades: An Interview With Mike Lucas, Ibew Director Of Organizing, Jeff Grabelsky

Jeffrey Grabelsky

[Excerpt] Like the bottom-up organizers who built the IBEW 100 years ago by traveling from city to city, working at their trade and preaching the union creed, Lucas has been around the block. From Florida to Oklahoma, Indiana to Tennessee, he worked from 1954 to 1959 as a member of the Laborers and Teamsters unions. He began his organizing career in the utility construction industry, and first volunteered his talents to the IBEW in 1960 by organizing the manufacturing workers at a new Studebaker plant in Bloomington, Indiana, which he had recently helped build as a union electrician. He served …

Dispelling The Myths Of Machine Translation, Uwe Muegge Jan 2008

Dispelling The Myths Of Machine Translation, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

It is not surprising that myths, half-truths, and misunderstandings abound regarding machine translation: It seems as if the experience most players in the translation field have with this technology does not go beyond toying a little with one of the free online translation tools. Almost every week, I come across an article informing its readers either that machine translation is and always will be a complete waste of time or that machine translation, while being a waste of time today, might actually be useful some time in the distant future. In the hope of setting the record straight, here is …

The Genesis Creation Sequence: The Principles Of Social Choice Theory Impossibility-Resolution, David Randall Jenkins

David Randall Jenkins

The Genesis Creation Sequence is not about the creation of the physical world, per se. Rather, it is about the resolution of conflict in the philosophy of the human condition.

Political Liberalism And Public Reason, Mario Šilar Jan 2008

Political Liberalism And Public Reason, Mario Šilar

Mario Šilar

The paper explores John Rawls´s idea of public reason, as reflected in Political Liberalism and The Idea of Public Reason Revisited. In Rawls’s later works, public reason acquires fundamental significance as a criterion by which the principles to be assumed from the outset in a theory of political justice may be determined. The starting-point for Rawls´s theory -the idea of citizens as free and equal reveals- that this abstraction falls short of an authentic conception of human beings as social by nature. A brief study of key issues concerning marriage and the family shows the difficulties that underlie this question. …

Recycling Copyright: Survival And Growth In The Remix Age, Michael Katz Dec 2007

Recycling Copyright: Survival And Growth In The Remix Age, Michael Katz

Michael Katz

Current copyright law, both as written and as applied, is stifling the development of new content, limiting the use of creative work, and prohibiting uses which are reasonable and fair given the state of current technology. Copyright law should be amended to recognize profound change in publishing and editing created by the advent and growth of digital technology, and should allow for reference to and creative reuse and recycling of all digital media. If done correctly, the original goals of copyright - to encourage and reward the development of creative works for the betterment of society - will be served …

The Search For Identity: Emergent Catholicity In The Modern Business School, Brian Schmisek, Dale Fodness, Robert Walsh Dec 2007

The Search For Identity: Emergent Catholicity In The Modern Business School, Brian Schmisek, Dale Fodness, Robert Walsh

Brian Schmisek

For the Catholic University that is not affiliated with a religious order or congregation, the Catholic identity within the business school may not be well defined. Therefore, the school is not able to answer the basic question of how the mission as Catholic per se is manifest. It leaves open important questions in regard to its curriculum, faculty and student composition, and enrollment management. For example, even with Ex Corde Ecclesiae it is difficult to answer: what is a “Catholic” business school, what precisely (other than the number of Catholics on the faculty) differentiates a Catholic business school from any …
