Accounting Undergraduate Honors Theses
In the summer of 2019, I, along with 8 other students from the University of Arkansas departed the United States for the Central American country of Belize. Despite our limited knowledge of what Belize held in store for us, we were enthusiastic about the coming months. While we had different projects, we all set out with the same universal question in mind. How can we use the knowledge we have gained through education to make a positive impact on the lives of people living in an impoverished town? Some of the members of our team worked alongside local businesses to …

There is gender inequality at the equity partner level in public accounting firms. The number of female partners is much lower than male partners. This paper examines the three main reasons for this discrepancy. The reasons are the difficulty in finding an appropriate work-life balance, good formal and informal mentors, and the extra financial risk associated with being an equity partner. Next, comparisons to law firms and educators are made examining the reasons for any gender inequality in those industries. Finally, proposed solutions to the three main reasons for the gender inequality in public accounting are explored.
Perceptions On The Advancement Of Women To Public Accounting Leadership Roles, Mylane Bella-Smuts
Perceptions On The Advancement Of Women To Public Accounting Leadership Roles, Mylane Bella-Smuts
Senior Honors Projects
For more than 21 years, women have joined the accounting profession in equal numbers to men, yet women represent just 19% of the U.S. public accounting partner population (Bennett, 2013). This research project looks at the current environment for women in leadership positions in public accounting firms by analyzing perceptions on the work environment for women, work-life balance, and implementation effectiveness of firm initiatives related to the advancement of women. Results from one-on-one interviews and surveys suggest that the perception of the work environment for women in the public accounting profession is positive, but women’s commitment to achieving partnership status …

Look Before You Leap: 4 Questions Every Woman Should Ask While Job Searching, Hannah Y. Olvera
Look Before You Leap: 4 Questions Every Woman Should Ask While Job Searching, Hannah Y. Olvera
Marriott Student Review
Despite women’s preparation and effort during the job searching process, women are disproportionately dissatisfied with their employers. According to a Crain’s Report conducted in 2016, 42 percent of women left because they “didn’t feel recognized and didn’t see opportunities for advancement,” 43.6 percent believe their compensation is less compared to their male peers, and only 50.4 percent believe their companies have a fair family leave policy. To overcome these challenges, women must ask various questions to lead them to their ideal career from an equal opportunity employer. As women become more assertive in their job searching, they will create a …
Gender Inequity Within Public Accounting, Paige Petersen
Gender Inequity Within Public Accounting, Paige Petersen
Honors Thesis
Traditionally a male-dominated field, the public accounting industry has seen recent progress in the presence and advancement of women in the profession. Today, women comprise half of accounting students, Certified Public Accountant test-takers, and employees at public accounting firms. However, women in public accounting face an invisible barrier when it comes to reaching the level of partner, where they represent only nineteen percent of partners. Uneven distribution of female representation should be of concern to public accounting firms seeking to maximize the potential of their talent pool and gain the benefits of diverse leadership. Traditional viewpoints on this issue promote …
A Commentary On Women In The Workforce: Has The Issue Of Gender Discrimination Pierced Through To The Accounting Profession?, Jennifer A. Roman
A Commentary On Women In The Workforce: Has The Issue Of Gender Discrimination Pierced Through To The Accounting Profession?, Jennifer A. Roman
Accounting
The following is intended to be a theoretical commentary on the issue of gender discrimination against women in the modern professional workforce. The content is designed to discuss the issue at hand and explain its pertinence within modern society. The relevant discussion will suggest that there seems to be a sufficient quantity of anecdotal evidence in order to suggest that this issue may have penetrated the accounting profession. This raises the concern that women may be experiencing discrimination within the accounting profession, in terms of leadership roles, monetary earnings, and employer-provided benefits. Ultimately, this discussion will raise questions to be …

Minorities And Women In Accounting, Alyssa K. Lee
Honors Scholar Theses
Traditionally, the field of public accounting has been dominated by white males. Today, minorities and women have been steadily penetrating the profession. As these diverse groups work together, conflicts in culture and awareness often arise. In this paper, I will discuss some of the origins of these conflicts and their effects on the people involved.
Accounting By Women: Fear, Favour And The Path To Professional Recognition For Australian Women Accountants, K. Cooper
Faculty of Business - Accounting & Finance Working Papers
This paper traces the campaign by women in Australia to gain admission to accounting bodies. The opposition to female membership of accounting bodies is set within the context of views of the abilities and place of women at the time. In general, women had neither the nature nor the intelligence for the commercial world. Even if women were mentally equipped for commercial work, this was contrary to nature because women should be companions to men not competitors. However, two crises saw the beginning of the acceptance of women as members of accounting bodies. One such crisis was the monetary impact …

Mary Addison Hamilton, Australia’S First Lady Of Numbers, K. Cooper, A Kurtovic
Faculty of Business - Accounting & Finance Working Papers
In the early 20th century, the restriction of women entering the accounting as well as other professions was common, yet Australia’s first lady of numbers, Mary Addison Hamilton (Addie) has also been Australia’s forgotten pioneer. Addie became the first woman admitted to membership of a recognised professional accounting body in the British Commonwealth during a time when women’s admission to the accounting arena was strongly discouraged. This paper will attempt to explain why it is that Addie’s outstanding achievement has gone unnoticed by the modern day accounting profession rating no mention in Australian accounting history literature. Was it a case …
