Robotic Process Automation (“RPA”) is a recently emergent technology that has exploded in popularity as firms seek to capitalize upon the marketing promise of cost reduction and improved efficiency. Yet, with this expansion of RPA, very little is known about the firms’ initial drivers, perceptions during implementation, and how outcomes align with initial expectations. RPA could displace and dramatically change the workforce, but it is unclear how employees will respond to the continuing spread of RPA. This study considered challenges confronting Louisiana Certified Public Accountants, relating to technological changes to accounting information systems, which necessitated the use of advanced analytical tools. The research emphasized the problem of accountants’ lack of preparedness to use big data analytics in accounting work. The project focused on practicing accountants in Louisiana, to gain their perspectives about big data analytics in accounting, the competitive impact technology shifts have on accounting practice, and preparedness to use accounting analytics in accounting work. Small and medium sized-enterprise managers are unable to effectively manage employees’ knowledgeability and innovation systems successfully, which results in negative firm performance. Managers who do not consider employee knowledge management and the benefits related to innovation systems experience financial hardships within the organization. Grounded in the unified model of dynamic organizational knowledge creation theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between knowledge management, innovation systems, and firm performance. In order to fully appreciate the potential impact accounting information systems have on the accounting profession, an understanding of what accounting encompasses is necessary. Over the years, accounting has evolved from what many would call a “checks and balance” system to a much more complex system involving complicated activities such as calculating taxes and garnishments, auditing financial statements and processing payroll to name a few. It would be reasonable to think that advanced technology such as accounting information systems would only enhance the production of these activities.
