A Survey To Highlight Areas Of Focus For Patient Care In Settings Utilizing Medical Interpretation, Azayzel Deregis
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis recounts my personal experience working as a volunteer medical interpreter for the Language and Culture Resource Center at East Tennessee State University. The result of my time spent volunteering as a medical interpreter, shadowing professional medical interpreters, and witnessing patient-provider interactions during interpreted sessions was an inspiration to study medical interpretation further and delve into the challenges faced by patients who require medical interpreters. The Stories Of Junot Díaz: Genre And Narrative In Drown And This Is How You Lose Her, Luis Fernando Marin
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how Junot Díaz creates and constructs his literary alter-ego and narrator, Yunior de las Casas, and examines the Social and cultural aspects, such as race, ethnicity, and gender, that condition or influence Yunior’s construction. My analysis includes narratological and generic readings of Drown and This Is How You Lose Her, with a brief look at The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, paying particular attention to Yunior as …

Inadequate Translations: Spanish/English Discrepancies In The Translated Sonnets Of Garcilaso De La Vega, Jessica V. Palmer
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The intimate relationship one develops with his or her native language is an experience which cannot be replicated through any amount of education. Diction, vocabulary, intonation and the connotations which accompany the many facets of language all develop along with us as we progress through life's experiences. Because of this deeply ingrained personal understanding, each individual's perspective towards a work of art, namely poetry, is completely unique to his or her experiences with the language in which it is written. Therefore, no amount of diligent translation can make a poem inhabit the same sentiment and effect in any language other …

Medical Interpretation In Cache Valley Clinics, Blain Chaise Housley, Brandon Kay Shumway
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Interpretation by properly trained employees in a medical setting is an important part of ensuring quality care to Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients. This study used surveys to assess the effective use of language resources in medical clinics in the Cache Valley area. The survey measured the number of interpreters and bilingual employees and the training that they have received as well as the perceived efforts of each clinic towards certain language service standards. The survey revealed a significant need for improvement and gave insight as to which activities future training efforts should be directed. Improvement in these areas will …
