Finding Inspiration In Darkness: The Exploration Of Obscurity In Romanticism Through The Works Of Lord Byron And Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Sarah E. Seal Dec 2016

Finding Inspiration In Darkness: The Exploration Of Obscurity In Romanticism Through The Works Of Lord Byron And Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Sarah E. Seal

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Through the works of Lord Byron and Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, I explored the function of the themes of darkness and obscurity in Romanticism. There was a clear connection between the inclusion of these themes and the rejection of the Enlightenment period, which is what I focused on in this thesis. I discovered that the Romantics found inspiration and beauty in the darker, stranger aspects of the natural world, while rejecting the logical and rational beliefs of the Enlightenment.

Mesa Para Dos. La Gastronomía En La Poesía Y El Cine Españoles, Dolores Juan Moreno Nov 2016

Mesa Para Dos. La Gastronomía En La Poesía Y El Cine Españoles, Dolores Juan Moreno

Doctoral Dissertations

This doctoral dissertation examines the alliances between Gastronomy, Film and Poetry in Peninsular Spanish Culture between 2000 and 2015. The thesis that I defend in this project argues that poetry and cinema employ the same tools in their display of culinary elements. These techniques are rooted in a concept promoted by the Catalonian chef Ferran Adrià: the “extrañamiento” that comes from a process of culinary deconstruction. Because of their need to enhance multiple meanings in a limited space, poets and filmmakers turn to “extrañamiento” as a means to capture the attention of the public who, unexpectedly, is able to shed …

The Crafting Of The Self In Private Letters And The Epistolary Novel: El Hilo Que Une, Un Verano En Bornos, Ifigenia, Querido Diego, Te Abraza Quiela, And Cartas Apócrifas, Angelica A. Nelson

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The inherent flexibility of the letter form or epistolary mode of writing frees the writer within the framework of salutations and closings to use vocabulary and language to create, to omit or to invert conventional constraints imposed on women by a patriarchal society. The letter begins as a blank page but becomes the space for writing one’s personal thoughts and emotions to the absent other in a communicative effort to minimize the separation.

This dissertation examines the female narrator in actual letters written during the Spanish emigration to the New World in the sixteenth century and four epistolary novels written …

Carmen(Es) Y Lola. El Continuo Generacional De La Educación De La Mujer Desde La Novela Y El Monólogo Teatral De Cinco Horas Con Mario Hasta La Película Función De Noche, Elisabet Pallàs Nov 2016

Carmen(Es) Y Lola. El Continuo Generacional De La Educación De La Mujer Desde La Novela Y El Monólogo Teatral De Cinco Horas Con Mario Hasta La Película Función De Noche, Elisabet Pallàs

Masters Theses

Taking as a point of reference the voice and figure of Carmen Sotillo, the present study analyzes Miguel Delibes’ Cinco horas con Mario (1966), the theatrical adaptation with the same name directed by Josefina Molina, and the film Función de noche (1981), directed also by Molina. The study addresses, on the one hand, the analysis of the mentioned works, establishing a cause-consequence relationship between Carmen’s speech and the educational paradigms of the Francoist regime in regard to women. On the other hand, the study is interested, from a general perspective, in the ideological state apparatuses and the mechanisms destined to …

“The Hour Of The Furnaces: Collaborative Cinema’S Fragmentary Form”, Eunha Choi Nov 2016

“The Hour Of The Furnaces: Collaborative Cinema’S Fragmentary Form”, Eunha Choi

Dissidences

Cinematic structure remains constitutively collaborative. While critics like André Bazin have described cinema as mixed or impure, this article advances the concept of cinema as collaborative aesthetics. The conventional understanding of collaboration is that it represents aggregation, namely the gradual growth toward a total and completed whole. After all, collaborative practice generally works toward identifiable goals. Conversely, I argue here that The Hour of the Furnaces shows us how cinematic collaboration also operates by subtractions, unresolved dissonances, unfinished instances, and contradictions rather than syntheses or cohesive totality. Despite the filmmakers’ express intentions, I contend that their political documentary film lacks …

Espacio, Movimiento Y Afecto En Lumpérica Y Vaca Sagrada, De Diamela Eltit, Alberto Lopez Martin Oct 2016

Espacio, Movimiento Y Afecto En Lumpérica Y Vaca Sagrada, De Diamela Eltit, Alberto Lopez Martin

Dissidences

Confluencias Interartísticas Entre La Pintura Y La Literatura, Jimena Zambrano

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This research analyzes the dialogue between literature and painting; specifically the convergence of aesthetic practices generated through ekphrasis. This study addresses the question of the role of ekphrasis in Hispanic literature, emphasizing the features and significance of the pictorial record in each fictional work. The research starts by delving into the theoretical discussion that has arisen around ekphrasis, in order to propose a definition that fits the needs of the investigation. It analyzes Las siete cabritas by Elena Poniatowska; specifically the narratives addressed to Frida Kahlo, Maria Izquierdo and Nahui Olin. The objective of this article is to examine the …

Figuras De Carlos En Missing (Una Investigación), De Alberto Fuguet: Nuevas Declinaciones De La Novela Latinoamericana, María-José Furió Sancho

Dissidences

Cervantes' "Ocho Comedias Y Ocho Entremeses Nuevos, Nunca Representados": A Theater Of Tradition And Innovation, Michael K. Predmore Sep 2016

Cervantes' "Ocho Comedias Y Ocho Entremeses Nuevos, Nunca Representados": A Theater Of Tradition And Innovation, Michael K. Predmore

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study closely examines the eight interludes and eight full-length plays that Cervantes published in a collection on the thirteenth of September, 1615. Although these theatrical works were published together, the collection has seldom been examined in its entirety as a coherent unit. The purpose of this study, therefore, will be to re-cast a critical focus upon these theatrical works as a whole, in order to provide insight into Cervantes as both a playwright and as an inquisitive and unconventional thinker of his day. Typically, Cervantes was seen as a fairly conventional dramatist until around 1950, when a significant number …

Masculinidades En Crisis Y Prácticas De Resistencia Feminista En La Literatura Y El Cine Españoles De Autoría Femenina, Carmen Sanchis-Sinisterra Sep 2016

Masculinidades En Crisis Y Prácticas De Resistencia Feminista En La Literatura Y El Cine Españoles De Autoría Femenina, Carmen Sanchis-Sinisterra

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the representation of masculinity in crisis in films and novels by contemporary female authors of Spain. The films are El último viaje de Robert Rylands by Gracia Querejeta, Te doy mis ojos by Iciar Bollaín and La vida sin mí by Isabel Coixet. The novels are Amado amo by Rosa Montero, Los aires difíciles by Almudena Grandes and La conquista del aire by Belén Gopegui. The question this dissertation asks is if by introducing male characters that lack power, control and success the works promote practices of feminist resistance. The answer is that they do but, as …

Con Cuydadosos Descuydos Descubiertos: Una Aproximación A La Obra De José Camerino En El Marco De La Novela Del Siglo Xvii, Beatriz G. Acrich Cohen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

When Cervantes publishes his collection of Novelas Ejemplares in 1613, he introduces a type of composition that lacked academic prestige and was not in any way regulated. Although Italian and Spanish writers had already dabbled with brief narrative fictions, it is the author of El Quijote who pushes the new genre in which he skillfully articulates the literary traditions. The success of his collection is immediate; numerous editions of his novellas in various Spanish cities are testimony of the bases which the author was setting, and he rapidly begins to be imitated. The readers enthusiastically receive and consume the short …

Science Fiction In The Spanish University: The Boundaries That Need To Be Broken, Sara Martín Sep 2016

Science Fiction In The Spanish University: The Boundaries That Need To Be Broken, Sara Martín

Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía

The aim of this article is to trace what Rosi Braidotti calls an ‘accurate cartography’ as regards the limited space that science-fiction occupies in the Spanish university. SF has not yet overcome in Spain what Brian Baker has called its ‘crisis of legitimation’. Teaching this genre and doing research on it is, hence, still conditioned within our national borders by boundaries broken in the Anglo-American university many decades ago. Here I examine these boundaries, paying special attention to the institutional limitations preventing scholars from introducing innovations in teaching and research. Another main barrier, as I argue here, is the lack …

A Nest For The Soul: The Trope Of Solitude In Three Early Modern Discalced Carmelite Nun-Poets, Stacey Schlau Aug 2016

A Nest For The Soul: The Trope Of Solitude In Three Early Modern Discalced Carmelite Nun-Poets, Stacey Schlau

Stacey Schlau

For early modern Discalced Carmelite nun-poets, solitude remains tied to the paradoxical equation of life to death and death to life so famously parsed by St. Teresa. This essay examines poems by María de San Alberto (1568-1640), Ana de la Trinidad (1577-1613), and Gregoria Francisca de Santa Teresa (1653-1736) exploring the possibilities of creating and maintaining solitude while embarked on a quest for mystical union. Outstanding practitioners of the Teresian poetic tradition, the Founding Mother’s religious and literary example allowed them the freedom to communicate with their religious sisters and subsequent readers, and thereby establish religious community through writing.

Folkloric Structure And Narrative Voice In Bècquer's Leyendas, Linda M. Willem Jul 2016

Folkloric Structure And Narrative Voice In Bècquer's Leyendas, Linda M. Willem

Linda M. Willem

The bulk of the critical study of Gustavo Bècquer's leyendas has dealt with the thematics, stylistics, or the folkloric motifs and origins of the individual works. Surprisingly little attention has been given to the structure or the narrative techniques used in the leyendas as a whole. The purpose of this study is to examine these structural and narrative aspects from a folkloric perspective in order to better appreciate Bècquer's blending of popular and literary art forms.

Narrative Voice, Point Of View, And Characterization In Graciliano Ramos's Vidas Sêcas, Linda M. Willem Jul 2016

Narrative Voice, Point Of View, And Characterization In Graciliano Ramos's Vidas Sêcas, Linda M. Willem

Linda M. Willem

Virtually all criticism concerning Vidas Sêcas includes a discussion of its multiple point of view format and its use of free indirect style. It is generally agreed that the shifting points of view provide a multifaceted view of reality, and that the free indirect style technique is a verisimilar method of presenting the thoughts of the inarticulate protagonists, as well as being a means of combining third person objectivity with first person subjectivity. These observations, however, show a tendency to treat narrative voice and point of view as a single phenomenon, thereby blurring the distinction between the two. Yet the …

Breve Acercamiento A La Cuestión Morisca En La Temprana Edad Moderna En España, Farah Dih Jul 2016

Breve Acercamiento A La Cuestión Morisca En La Temprana Edad Moderna En España, Farah Dih

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this thesis is to provide a brief historical overview of the Morisco issue in Early Modern Spain, as well as to analyze some of the most prominent literary production related to it. This study is organized into four chapters that explore the topic from the perspective of three different disciplines: history, historiography and literature. The first chapter establishes a historical framework for the foundation of the Spanish Inquisition, and highlights the ideas of Américo Castro about the coexistence of the three Spanish “castas” (the Christian, the Muslim and the Jewish). The second chapter reviews Francisco Márquez Villanueva’s …

Acercamiento Al Pensamiento Mágico Y La Superstición En El Discurso Literario De La Primera Modernidad Española: Miguel De Cervantes Y María De Zayas, Miguel Magdaleno Santamaria Jul 2016

Acercamiento Al Pensamiento Mágico Y La Superstición En El Discurso Literario De La Primera Modernidad Española: Miguel De Cervantes Y María De Zayas, Miguel Magdaleno Santamaria

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this thesis is to serve as a first approach to magical thinking and superstition in the literary discourse of Early Modern Spain, by examining these topics in Miguel de Cervantes’ first Quijote (1605) and María de Zayas’ Novelas Amorosas y Ejemplares (1637). The methodology followed in this thesis fundamentally includes the points of view of four fields of study. These are: anthropology, history, literature and historical linguistics. Accordingly, this study is thematically divided into four big sections: first, a discussion around the concept of ‘magical thinking’ in relation to religion (from an anthropological point of view); second, …

Escritos Para Desocupados (2013) De Vivian Abenshushan: De Contraensayos, Libros Aumentados Y Vanguardias De Liberación, Gloria M. Robayo Trujillo

Dissertations and Theses

The present study focuses on Escritos para desocupados (Writings for the Unoccupied), a 2013 work by Mexican author Vivian Abenshushan, as a multifaceted book that poses challenges for literary studies, book studies, and the reader in general. From a textual perspective, Escritos para desocupados is a shape-shifter. That is, depending on how the reader accesses its content, it can be a blog-book, a web-book, a printed book or a digital PDF-book. Using a term coined by the author, the "augmented book," I seek to encompass a phenomenon that is no longer unusual, the publication of a text in different media. …

Origén E Influencia De La Figura De Simón Bolívar En Los Escritores Modernistas Hispanoamericanos, Wilson Anaya

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The purpose of my thesis is to examine the various ways in which the writers of Latin America’s Modernist movement were influenced by Simon Bolivar’s ideology. At the same time, I will illustrate how these authors utilized throughout their literary discourse the image of the most important and iconic historical figure of South America’s independence wars against Spain. Throughout this thesis I will evaluate several literary works of modernist Latin-American authors such as the Cuban José Martí, the Venezuelans Rufino Blanco Fombona, Manuel Diaz Rodriguez, César Zumeta, the Colombians José Asunción Silva, Guillermo Valencia and José María Rivas Groot, the …

José Tamayo In Spanish America, 1949-1951, Carey Kasten

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

“José Tamayo in Spanish America, 1949-1951” relies on previously overlooked archival material from Spain and Spanish America to reconstruct the performance schedule and study the financial management and critical reception of the Lope de Vega Company in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Colombia. In doing so, it sheds new light on Tamayo’s administration of the artistic agenda and fiscal needs of his company’s international tour, helping us to understand how Tamayo built and cultivated his growing fame, at home and abroad, in the early part of his career. The performance calendar featured in the article’s appendix provides a previously unavailable comprehensive …

La Censura Católica Literaria Durante La Posguerra Española: Traspasando Las Fronteras De La Ideología Franquista., Ángela Pérez Del Puerto

Doctoral Dissertations

My research studies the literary censorship carried out by the Catholic Action Association through the Secretary of Bibliographic Orientation (SBO) in Spain during the 1940s. This secular institution paralleled, and in certain moments questioned, some Francoist values by judging and banning publications that had previously passed the official censorship. In particular, the censorship of the SBO focused, on the one hand, on Modernist Spanish authors who were accused of preaching strong anti-religious ideas and, on the other hand, on new texts published in that period that failed to reproduce the Catholic discourse. Through the analysis of this censorship activity, my …

Borges Y El “Criollismo”: Alegoría, Sátira Y Parodias, Jeffrey D. Tamucci May 2016

Borges Y El “Criollismo”: Alegoría, Sátira Y Parodias, Jeffrey D. Tamucci

Honors Scholar Theses

Jorge Luis Borges famously quipped, “Not granting me the Nobel prize has become a Scandinavian tradition; since I was born, they have not been granting it to me.” While made tongue-in-cheek, this quote serves as a nice introduction to Borges's sly (often petty) wit, and also to the genuine lack of recognition he received during his productive years. He was snubbed out of awards repeatedly, even from his own country. In 1942, Borges lost the Argentinian National Literature Competition to Eduardo Diaz, a Uruguayan author of gauchesque literature. Critics praised the work of Diaz as indisputably Argentinian, yet considered the …
