After growing up in a city where I was privileged to observe a combination of cultures, I felt especially drawn to how children grow up in these environments, especially as it pertains to education. With this in mind, my thesis easily became a place for me to write and illustrate a bilingual children’s picture book. The generation of '98 is a name given to certain individuals united in their literary efforts to better Spain politically, socially and culturally. The date of the group is significant since it symbolizes the transformation of Spanish life as a result of Spain's war with the United States. This group of young non-conformists consisted mainly of Valle Inclan, Azorin, Benavente, Maeztu, Baroja and Unamuno. All were characterized by their protest against Spain's immediate past, demanding new precedents to be set for future action and tradition.
