In the 1980s, Rita Quintero, a Tarahumara from northern Mexico, was detained in a mental hospital in Larned, Kansas for twelve years because of ignorance and maltreatment from Kansas state officials and health care workers. As a result of their inability and lack of effort to understand her culture, the doctors diagnosed Rita with schizophrenia and forced her to take psychiatric medications. Rita’s case eventually caught national and international attention, especially through the work of the Mexican playwright, Victor Hugo Rascón Banda (1948-2008) who produced the theater piece La mujer que cayó del cielo (2000) to detail the actual events …

This thesis is a study of the interaction of music and politics during the social movement in Catalonia, Spain, the nova cançó. This interaction demonstrates the importance of a cultural identity, imagined communities, and cultural planning for a nation. In the case of Catalonia, the nova cançó played an immediate crucial role in the transformation of society during the last years of the extremely repressive dictatorship of Francisco Franco (1939-1975). Franco controlled Spain ideologically through censorships and power over the media in order to spread his values of a unified, homogenous, nationalist fatherland. In this way, he destroyed the …

Chinese immigration to Argentina is the fourth largest in the nation, after Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru, yet the Chinese are the largest group of non-Spanish speaking immigrants in the country. In my thesis I explore the significance of such high rates of Chinese immigration to Argentina to further understand concepts of transculturation. I want to know why these immigrants came to Argentina, how they created enclaves, and how they interact and contribute to Argentine society.
