Entextualización Del Discurso Político En Colombia. Análisis Glotopolítico Del Proceso De Escritura De La Constitución De 1991, Jorge Luis Alvis-Castro

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Although constitutions are part of the canon of disciplinary writings, along with grammar books and etiquette manuals, and are also central texts in the processes of formation and consolidation of Latin American nation-states, to date, they have not been sufficiently explored in their social and linguistic processes of discursive elaboration. With a glottopolitical approach, this research examines the social, communicative and ideological components involved in the writing process of the Colombian Constitution of 1991, developed in a context of State crisis and violence aggravated by narco-terrorist attacks. Using the concept of entextualization, which refers to the process of extracting discourse …

“Investment In Inertia”: Language Ideologies Of Instructors And Students Of Spanish As A Heritage Language, Michael E. Rolland

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

When the Spanish-language skills of heritage Spanish learners are disparaged in an academic environment, these learners are at high risk of abandoning further study of Spanish and shifting entirely to English. This dissertation uses mixed qualitative and quantitative research methods, including thematic and discourse analysis, to investigate the language ideologies of instructors and students of Spanish as a heritage language (SHL) and the effects of those ideologies on students’ experiences in SHL college courses. It builds on earlier research on language ideologies in the post-secondary heritage language context (e.g., Carreira, 2011; Loza, 2017; Valdés et al., 2003). I find that …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study examines the linguistic construction of social personae (voice) of the Chilean working class during the process of nation-state formation in the late 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Specifically, it considers the mediation of writing in processes of identity formation and emerging political stances in a historical context characterized by the intense socioeconomic, linguistic and cultural transformations that took place in Chile during a period of capitalist development and national modernization. The corpus is made up of a set of seventy familiar letters written by soldiers, miners and women who experienced the territorial expansion brought …

Discursos Institucionales Y Manuales De Texto De La American Association Of Teachers Of Spanish (1912–1944): Un Estudio De La Historia Política De La Enseñanza Del Español En Estados Unidos, Inés Vañó García

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study focuses on the political history of the teaching of Spanish in the United States during the first half of 20th century. Drawing from the history of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish – AATS (1926) as a normative agent, along with key linguistic instruments created by its well-known members, this research examines its role in the creation and shaping of a new academic field in which two ideological processes were key in the configuration of this disciplinary space: hispanism and panamericanism. By identifying a collection of teaching materials, this project explores the normative model and methodologies that …

A Computational Study In The Detection Of English–Spanish Code-Switches, Yohamy C. Polanco Feb 2021

A Computational Study In The Detection Of English–Spanish Code-Switches, Yohamy C. Polanco

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Code-switching is the linguistic phenomenon where a multilingual person alternates between two or more languages in a conversation, whether that be spoken or written. This thesis studies the automatic detection of code-switching occurring specifically between English and Spanish in two corpora.

Twitter and other social media sites have provided an abundance of linguistic data that is available to researchers to perform countless experiments. Collecting the data is fairly easy if a study is on monolingual text, but if a study requires code-switched data, this becomes a complication as APIs only accept one language as a parameter. This thesis focuses on …

The Grammatical Systems Of Attentionworthiness: Positional Signals And Invariant Meanings In Spanish Word Order, Eduardo Ho-Fernández Sep 2020

The Grammatical Systems Of Attentionworthiness: Positional Signals And Invariant Meanings In Spanish Word Order, Eduardo Ho-Fernández

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation presents a Columbia School analysis of word order phenomena in Spanish. The data was sourced from a corpus of manually collected utterances extracted from six volumes of Latin American short stories written in the twentieth century. The study employs various qualitative and quantitative techniques in order to test the various hypotheses offered as explanations of the distributional problems selected for the study. The observations roughly correspond to word orders that the grammatical tradition describes as having to do with either verbs with one argument (SV, VS, OV, VO) or verbs with two arguments (SVO, OVS, VSO, VOS, SOV, …

Afro-Americano: The Transracialization Of The African-American Spanish Speaker, John M. Flanagan Jun 2020

Afro-Americano: The Transracialization Of The African-American Spanish Speaker, John M. Flanagan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Transracialization is not a biological term connoting the change of one’s skin tone to become a member of a different race. Its definition has its roots in racialization—the ideological process that describes how one assembles ideas about groups based on their race and decides, for example, what a ‘Black’ person is and how ‘Black’ people speak. Thus, transracialization is a linguistic term that describes the political and sociocultural act of recontextualizing one’s phenotype with the use of language, and in so doing, upending the observers’ stereotypical expectations of who one is (Alim 2016). This dissertation deals with how Spanish influences …

Glotopolítica De La Desigualdad: Ideologías Del Mapudungun Y El Español En Chile (2009–2019), Gabriel E. Alvarado Pavez

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Glottopolitics of Inequality: Ideologies on Mapudungun and Spanish in Chile (2009-2019) by Gabriel Alvarado Pavez Advisor: José del Valle This dissertation is an attempt to analyze contemporary discourses on Mapudungun and Spanish and their development within the political and economic context of Chile between 2009 and 2019. The object of analysis is the diverse array of linguistic ideologies displayed on both the hegemonic press (newspapers of nationwide circulation) and on Facebook, which helps provide a sociolinguistic profile of Chile from a glottopolitical perspective. This entails a point of view focused on power structures and their modes of (re)production and perpetuation, …

Perspectives From The Streets And The Classrooms In The Same 'Hood: Linguistic Landscapes Of Sunset Park, Brooklyn, Luis Guzman Valerio May 2018

Perspectives From The Streets And The Classrooms In The Same 'Hood: Linguistic Landscapes Of Sunset Park, Brooklyn, Luis Guzman Valerio

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation studies the linguistic landscape of the neighborhood of Sunset Park, in Brooklyn, New York by taking into account both a main commercial avenue and a public school with a dual language bilingual program in English and Spanish. Sunset Park is a multi-ethnic and immigrant neighborhood (Hum, 2014). While research has been done into the linguistic landscape of streets, cities, and communities, on the one hand, and about the linguistic landscape in education, on the other, the co-existence of these two in the same context has barely been studied (cf. Maldonado, 2015). This dissertation makes a contribution to the …

El Español De Canarias Y La Canariedad En La España Autonómica: Un Estudio Glotopolítico, Pablo Guerra

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this dissertation I intend to analyze the abundance of discourses about the Spanish from the Canary Islands from the 1980’s to present day. I have identified two key processes that are part of the consolidation of an autonomous field of reflection on language in the Canary Islands: the development of descriptive studies of the Spanish spoken in the Canary Islands carried out in the Department of Spanish Language at the Universidad de La Laguna (Tenerife) during the first twenty five years of democracy in Spain, as well as the creation of the Canarian Academy of Language in the year …

Continuidad Y Cambio En Los Condicionantes Lingüísticos Y Socio-Demográficos Del Uso Del Pronombre Sujeto En El Español De La Primera Generación En Nueva York, Lorena García-Barroso Sep 2017

Continuidad Y Cambio En Los Condicionantes Lingüísticos Y Socio-Demográficos Del Uso Del Pronombre Sujeto En El Español De La Primera Generación En Nueva York, Lorena García-Barroso

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In situations of bilingualism in the United States, it has been shown that speakers who alter their grammar (syntax or morphology) are mostly second generation, that is, Latinos born in the United States (Flores-Ferrán 2004; Montrul 2004 ; Silva-Corvalán, 1994). Research about Spanish in the US shows that second generation speakers have different features from those of the first generation who are Latinos born in Latin America. However, is it possible that all the speakers of the first generation behave grammatically in the same way due to the fact of being born in Latin America regardless of the amount of …

Lengua Y Violencias En Colombia: Discursos Sobre Patrimonio Lingüístico (1991-2010), Carolina Chaves-O'Flynn Feb 2017

Lengua Y Violencias En Colombia: Discursos Sobre Patrimonio Lingüístico (1991-2010), Carolina Chaves-O'Flynn

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study explores the forms of invisible violence that inhabit contemporary representations of the Spanish language in Colombia and which, under institutional protection, manage to intervene in its social order. The general hypothesis proposed in this work is that, language representations in Colombia are discursively naturalized and reproduce categories oriented towards the nation’s social, political and cultural order. Once normalized in that sense, these beliefs produce invisible forms of violence that tend to be reproduced through language discourses in which the main ideological power lies in their apparently apolitical nature. These discourses are thus not read critically, but they are …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The North American Academy of the Spanish Language (henceforth ANLE, from the Spanish Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española), and more specifically, the discourses about Spanish in the US that emerge in certain moments of this institution’s history, will constitute the object of this study. ANLE was founded in 1973 and in 1980, after some controversial episodes, was finally accepted into the network of academies known as Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española (henceforth ASALE), led by the main normative institution for Spanish, the Spanish Royal Academy (henceforth RAE, from the Spanish Real Academia Española). Through an …

Motivaciones Comunicativas Para La Expresión De Sujeto En Secuencias Clausales Correferenciales En Español, Berenice Darwich Feb 2016

Motivaciones Comunicativas Para La Expresión De Sujeto En Secuencias Clausales Correferenciales En Español, Berenice Darwich

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines subject expression in co-referential clauses in Spanish from a functional and discourse perspective. The purpose of this quantitative and qualitative investigation is to provide a strategy of communication that accounts for the presence or absence of subject expression in the second clause of a co-referential clausal sequence. Specifically, it is proposed that that subject expression, in this environment, is a discourse strategy for the use of the meanings of the personal pronouns and nominal phrases available for the speaker’s communicative purposes, and that this discourse strategy forestalls the competition for the status of discourse theme in the …
