Neoliberalism In The Gutter: Latin American Comics And Society Since The 1990s, Mauricio Espinoza
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Since the 1990s, Latin America has undergone important economic, social, political, and cultural transformations marked by the consolidation of neoliberal policies that swept through the region and helped define its contemporary societies. This essay explores comic books and cartoons produced by Latin American artists during this period, interrogating the various ways in which the graphic narrative medium has both reflected and reacted against neoliberalism’s impact throughout the continent. Through the use of political cartooning, superhero comics, and graphic novels that employ supernatural themes, the artists analyzed here have engaged with the big, contentious issues of contemporary Latin America, including foreign …

Where The Wild Things Go: Tourism And Ethnic Longing In The Theatre Of Rodolfo Santana , Vicky Unruh
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Tapping into the performative intricacies of tourist activity and showcasing the negotiations of performed ethnicity in the implicit contrasts between tourists and the people they travel to see, Latin American and U.S. Latino theatre artists use the tourist character or theme to investigate the cultural negotiations marking contemporary social life. This work parallels critical theory that investigates the tourist as an improvisatory player in trans-regional interactions and unpacks the tourist-“native” binary to revise conceptions of people and cultures that travel. As exemplified in two plays by Rodolfo Santana (Venezuela), artists deploy the tourist theme to critique culturalism, that is, to …
From The Atlantic To The Pacific: Maruja Mallo In Exile , Shirley Mangini
From The Atlantic To The Pacific: Maruja Mallo In Exile , Shirley Mangini
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Maruja Mallo's life (1902-1995) and art represent one woman's odyssey from the European vanguards to political commitment during the Spanish Republic (1931-1939) and finally to a unique transcendent art form after her wrenching exile from Spain and her residence in Latin America from 1937 to 1965. In her early career she was a leader among the avant-garde painters when few Spanish women were recognized as creative artists. In Latin America, her work diverged radically from European avant-garde trends and from her ideologically oriented subject matter of the 1930s; Mallo not only reflects the impact of her discovery of the Pacific …
