The compassion for, and understanding of, The Other, without bias, is the most revealing attribute of this paper. Given that immigration, and undocumented people constantly coming to the US, has become a national issue, it is inspiring to see that there still are ways of evaluating the problematic--with objectivity--yet with admiration. This writer is capable of seeing with the inner eyes, perceiving the colloquialisms of the Spanish language, the traits of the culture, and the emotion of both narratives that he is comparing. At the end of the day, film and art remain as the bridge between cultures.

Addressing Diversity And Difference In Contemporary Spanish Lesbian Literature: Reading Illy Nes’S El Lago Rosa And Cristina Cuesta’S “Zoe Y Haydee”, Megan Sheldon

Illy Nes’s novel El lago rosa (The Pink Lake, 2004) and Cristina Cuesta’s short story “Zoe y Haydee” (Zoe and Haydee, 2007) depict travel and cross-cultural queer relationships that call attention to racial and class differences as well as ethnic and cultural divides. Both narratives raise questions concerning the representation of queer women of color in Spanish fiction of the new millennium. En “El criollo y la esclavitud en Cecilia Valdés o la Loma del Ángel: potencia, resistencia y empoderamiento” analizo las concepciones de lo criollo, principalmente desde el mestizaje en Cecilia Valdés (1882) de Cirilo Villaverde. Propongo una lectura diferenciada de lo criollo, teniendo en consideración que la exégesis de lo criollo desde los predios de lo caribeño presenta algunas divergencias con relación al concepto de lo criollo manejado para la masa continental.
