The Divine Comedy: A Work Of Medieval Mythology, Jamie Alexander May 2024

The Divine Comedy: A Work Of Medieval Mythology, Jamie Alexander

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Prior to The Divine Comedy (1308-1321), ideas about Purgatory were in the early stages of development. Purgatory had loose rituals surrounding its existence and it lacked depiction in written works. Yet in the following centuries, the fear of Purgatory and the practices of penance and indulgences reached a fever pitch, ultimately leading to the Protestant Reformation. Purgatory as a celestial location, and not just the “purgatorial fires” of the Bible, only began to develop in the twelfth century, but its fearful description and imagery in The Divine Comedy not only solidified previously nebulous understandings of Purgatory, but also increased anxiety …

Catholicism And Politics In A Fallen World: Understanding Human Imperfection As Relates To Political Institutions, George J. Doyle Jan 2020

Catholicism And Politics In A Fallen World: Understanding Human Imperfection As Relates To Political Institutions, George J. Doyle

CSB and SJU Distinguished Thesis

This thesis is composed of two primary parts, each involving discussion of Catholicism and political life. Part I critiques Thomas Aquinas’ theory of government in light of his theory of nature, with an emphasis on original sin as a defining attribute of the human person. The section concludes with an argument in favor of democracy rooted in Aquinas’s theory of human nature, as well as an understanding of the role of the Catholic Church in light of the claims made in this part of the thesis. Part II contains a political science study assessing factors that contribute to party identification …

Dealing With The Fragmentation Of Knowledge: The Complex Grounds For Faith In Newman, Adorno, And Later, Colby Dickinson Nov 2018

Dealing With The Fragmentation Of Knowledge: The Complex Grounds For Faith In Newman, Adorno, And Later, Colby Dickinson

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This book blends historical, theological, and philosophical inquiries into what “modernity” means with the aim of showing how Newman can analyze, critique, and explain fruitful ways forward within a diverse range of subjects. First, it surveys historical and theological topics such as how Newman understood “modernity,” the sensus fidelium, the role of doubt and modern views of reason; Newman’s university ideal; and a return to the saint for much-needed anthropological insights. Second, the volume shows how Newman’s thought can be insightfully applied to key issues within church and society: the need to redefine “American” Catholicism, the challenge of secularization, the …

The Power Of Virtual Space, Katherine G. Schmidt Ph.D., Derek C. Hatch Jan 2016

The Power Of Virtual Space, Katherine G. Schmidt Ph.D., Derek C. Hatch

Faculty Works: TRS (2010-2022)

The following essay emerges from the consultation of Evangelical Catholics and Catholic Evangelicals at the 2016 convention of the College Theology Society, which brings together Catholica and Protestant voices concerning a shared topic. In 2016, the theme of liturgy and contemporary social and communications media was in focus. As panelists, we offered complementary papers that have become two sections of this essay. In the first section, Katherine Schmidt provides a theological account of media from a Catholic perspective. Through reflections on the mediatory character of the incarnation, she argues that para-liturgical or extra-liturgical spaces are integral to the Eucharistic assembly …

Suspicious Minds: The Spirituality Of The Postmodern Nones, Michael Murphy Feb 2014

Suspicious Minds: The Spirituality Of The Postmodern Nones, Michael Murphy

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Much has been made about the “nones” and the current demographics of belief in the United States, especially those of young people. The term nones rose to prominence when a Pew Research Center poll in 2012 called “Nones on the Rise” discovered that nearly 20 percent of Americans claim no religious affiliation—a number that has been steadily climbing since 2007. Last January, National Public Radio aired a weeklong series titled “Losing Our Religion: The Growth of the nones.” In the spring of 2013, a poll conducted by Michael Hout of the University of California, Berkeley, and Mark A. Chaves of …

The Scandal Of Our Tradition, Katherine G. Schmidt Ph.D. Jan 2012

The Scandal Of Our Tradition, Katherine G. Schmidt Ph.D.

Faculty Works: TRS (2010-2022)

I began college with visions of protests dancing in my head. Cautionary tales from high school teachers about the evils of liberal higher education— tales that, incidentally, only whetted my growing appetite to challenge unjust systems—created my image of college as a place of activism and revolution. But instead, I found complacent teenagers at a small, liberal arts Catholic college in the mountains, seemingly unaware of American wars being fought on dubious premises and annoyed by talk of current events. Although some students shared my concern for the injustices happening in the off-campus world, I struggled to find a place …

Everyman, A Modern Adaptation (Or, Number's Down), Merrick Robison May 2011

Everyman, A Modern Adaptation (Or, Number's Down), Merrick Robison

Honors Program Projects

Everyman is the most well known morality play that came out of the turn of the 16th century. Innumerable amounts of people have seen it in performance, both in the 1500s and modern day, since its revivals at the turn of the 20th century. It is a common choice of performance both on the professional and college level, and offers many opportunities for adaptation and modernization. The purpose for the project is to research the production and literary history of Everyman in order to write, produce, direct and perform in a modern adaptation of the morality play so it may …

Second-Grade Children Speak: Artistic Expression Of Sin And Forgiveness In The Sacrament Of Reconciliation, Jennifer Beste Apr 2010

Second-Grade Children Speak: Artistic Expression Of Sin And Forgiveness In The Sacrament Of Reconciliation, Jennifer Beste

Theology Faculty Publications

Despite a long-standing historical debate in Catholicism about whether second grade is an age-appropriate time to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, there has been a virtual absence of Catholic children's own voices and perspectives about this sacrament and its spiritual and moral effects. Joining a growing number of religious scholars who stress the need to engage in child-centered research, I conducted a qualitative study interviewing Catholic second graders about the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The purpose of this article is to analyze their drawings of this religious ritual. According to many psychologists and art therapists, children can best capture how they …

The Religious Other As Neighbor, Lawrence Frizzell May 2009

The Religious Other As Neighbor, Lawrence Frizzell

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

Many stories are told about antagonism between Christians and Jews, especially in countries with a large Jewish minority. The history of persecution should be told along with the lessons learned for our time. A brief review of examples whose participants were neighbors, either in reality or in principle, may be instructive. This paper will move through the centuries in a rapid survey, recalling friendly contacts or benign exchanges between Christians and Jews.
