Theological Education In Ecumenical Perspective, John H. Tietjen

How The Gospel Works, Richard R. Caemmerer Sr.
How The Gospel Works, Richard R. Caemmerer Sr.
Concordia Theological Monthly
In the long plan of God we can imagine one good issue emerging from this debate. That is that the meaning of the Gospel becomes clearer and its preaching to the church and the world more apt and timely.
“The Log In Your Own Eye.", Paul G. Bretscher
“The Log In Your Own Eye.", Paul G. Bretscher
Concordia Theological Monthly
It is painful for me to write what I am about to write-about the log in the eye of my own church. I am not blind to some of the specks or even logs which concern many of my brothers. Every confusion and diffusion and diminution of the Gospel deeply disturbs me. But our first concern has to be the log in the eye of those among us who assume they are qualified to do eye surgery on their brothers. The Lord's judgment has a strange way of beginning at Jerusalem.
The Task Of The Theological Professor, Arthur C. Repp
The Task Of The Theological Professor, Arthur C. Repp
Concordia Theological Monthly
This paper is a revision of a statement on the nature and purpose of the theological seminary that Dr. Repp read, to the Fact Finding Committee appointed by Dr. Jacob A. 0. Preus, President of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, to investigate the Biblical teaching of the faculty of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.

Sic Et Non: Are We So Sure Of Matthean Dependence On Mark?, H. P. Hamann
Sic Et Non: Are We So Sure Of Matthean Dependence On Mark?, H. P. Hamann
Concordia Theological Monthly
Let’s take another look at the view that Matthew depends on Mark, especially at the way in which G. M. Styler has recently defended it. The author then examines the pros and cons of the arguments and concludes that the case for Markan priority is not as open and shut as some would argue.
Situationism And Law In Christian Ethics, Paul Jersild
Situationism And Law In Christian Ethics, Paul Jersild
Concordia Theological Monthly
Our purpose in these pages is to focus on the question of law in Christian ethics and consider in what sense we can speak of the "law of God." This question is raised in a quite critical manner in situation ethics, and for that reason we shall discuss the subject in relation to this approach, and particularly in relation to the work of Joseph Fletcher. Our concern is to present a theological basis for the law-a basis that is notably lacking in situation ethics - and seek to clarify the relationship between love and law in the Christian understanding.
The Mission On Which We Are Sent, Paul E. Jacobs
The Mission On Which We Are Sent, Paul E. Jacobs
Concordia Theological Monthly
The Affirmations on the Mission of the Church which The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod adopted at the Detroit convention in 1965 are part of the evidence of the ongoing struggle of one part of the church to understand what and why the church is in the world. The struggle has not been easy nor has it been without conflict. The affirmations call us to see the church's mission in terms of people rather than church structures. They compel us to wrestle with the standards of comfort and convenience by which we continually serve ourselves. They plead with us to …
The Particularity Of The Gospel: Good News For Changing Times, John H. Elliott
The Particularity Of The Gospel: Good News For Changing Times, John H. Elliott
Concordia Theological Monthly
Change and decay in all around I see; O Thou, who changest not, abide with me." In this transitional period of modern history when change and change by revolution are the order of the day, the plaintive plea of the popular hymn seems to assume an ever more urgent note. But the question is this: How effectively, if at all, can the notion of the unchangeableness of God expressed in this hymn aid an atomic age society in coping with population explosions, sexual, racial, and campus revolutions, and the threat of worldwide nuclear annihilation? Can men of our time indeed …
The Gospel And The Ecumenical Movement, Robert P. Scharlemann
The Gospel And The Ecumenical Movement, Robert P. Scharlemann
Concordia Theological Monthly
The first conference on "Life and Work," held in Stockholm in 1925, appealed to Christians to repent the divisions among them and to make the gospel the decisive power in all areas of life. This conference - the "Nicea of ethics," as it came to be called-was not summoned to discuss the theological or dogmatic questions which divide the churches; it was called to address the churches' task of working together in the public life. The invitation declared the world situation to be so serious that Christians could not afford to await the reunion of churches before setting "hearts and …
The Authority Of Scripture, Kent S. Knutson
The Authority Of Scripture, Kent S. Knutson
Concordia Theological Monthly
We in the American Lutheran Church hope and pray that The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in Denver will take that step which is necessary for full altar and pulpit fellowship with the American Lutheran Church. As we understand it, you have already decided in convention assembled that the basis for such fellowship exists, but you must take this one more step. We are all acquainted with the complexities of American Lutheranism in the last hundred years, and we all know some of the misunderstandings and some of the real disagreements which have been among us in the decades of the past. …
New Testament Studies, Past And Present, Edgar Krentz
New Testament Studies, Past And Present, Edgar Krentz
Concordia Theological Monthly
The pastor who picks up a recent New Testament introduction or theology, a study of the Synoptic Gospels or Acts, or a history of New Testament times may well feel that for him the study of the New Testament has become an arcane and esoteric discipline. The questions asked about the Redaktionsgeschichte of a Gospel, the surprising frequency with which the term gnosis or Gnosticism appears in current literature, or the discussion in many circles of "incipient catholicism" may well lead him to suspect that the whole discipline has now changed.
The Continuing Significance Of Luther's Prefaces To The New Testament, Werner Georg Kuemmel
The Continuing Significance Of Luther's Prefaces To The New Testament, Werner Georg Kuemmel
Concordia Theological Monthly
When Martin Luther published his first translation of the New Testament into the German language in 1522, he did not publish the Biblical texts alone. He provided his readers with some help by prefaces to the whole New Testament and to the individual books. These prefaces were reprinted in all the following editions of the New Testament and of the whole Bible until the 17th century, but Luther took one of them out and changed the text of a few of them in later editions.
The Relationship Between Dogmatics And Ethics In The Thought Of Elert, Barth, And Troeltsch, Edward H. Schroeder
The Relationship Between Dogmatics And Ethics In The Thought Of Elert, Barth, And Troeltsch, Edward H. Schroeder
Concordia Theological Monthly
A concern for dogmatics and a concern for ethics do not always go together. The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, for example, has always had a strong dogmatic tradition, but has in general been uninterested in what is commonly called ethics. But this is the opposite of the situation in many other American denominations. To put the problem into a broader perspective, what is the relationship between dogmatics and ethics? A helpful approach is to study the distinctive answers given by Werner Elert, Karl Barth, and Ernst Troeltsch, which prove to be distinctive not only because their personal theological convictions …
Sacra Scriptura And ''Verbum Dei" In The Lutheran Confessions, Fred Kramer
Sacra Scriptura And ''Verbum Dei" In The Lutheran Confessions, Fred Kramer
Concordia Theological Monthly
To understand the Lutheran Reformation of the sixteenth century correctly one must know and bear in mind the fact that it was begun by a man who amid fearful troubles of conscience and after a long and bitter struggle for the certainty of his salvation had rediscovered the Gospel and who in turn desired to share its blessings with others.
The Proper Distinction Between Law And Gospel And The Terminology Visible And Invisible Church, F. E. Mayer
The Proper Distinction Between Law And Gospel And The Terminology Visible And Invisible Church, F. E. Mayer
Concordia Theological Monthly
Ecclesiastical, or dogmatical, terminology has proved to be a convenient tool to convey Scriptural truths succinctly and precisely and to reject erroneous views. However, ecclesiastical terminology may also become a barrier to a common understanding and may actually be the cause that two partners in a conversation talk past each other. The usus loquendi also in ecclesiastical terminology is never constant. The terminology adopted in the Chalcedonian Creed is a case in point. The English theologian unfamiliar with Greek thought patterns may encounter some difficulty in understanding the terms after they have been transferred from Greek to Latin, thence to …
We Conquer Death, Eduard Ellwein
We Conquer Death, Eduard Ellwein
Concordia Theological Monthly
When the golden sun emerges out of the ocean, he casts a shaft of his glorious light across the expanse of the water. The glorious reflection of an unspeakably greater light rests upon the Gospel of St. John: the certainty of our victory over death, the believer's assurance that he has conquered death and possesses eternal life as a present reality. To believe on the Son means to have eternal life.

Christ became a curse for us.
Why do you not jump up quivering from this electric shock?
Christ, the Only-begotten of the Father, in the bosom of the Father from eternity, in the glory of the Father-this majestic Christ became a curse for us.
A startling statement! What is it all about?
The Modernistic Christ, Theo Graebner
The Modernistic Christ, Theo Graebner
Concordia Theological Monthly
The reader of modern theological literature sometimes happens upon a title which possesses significance, not on account of any intrinsic worth as a product of scholarship, but as a typical instance of modern thought regarding the nature of Christianity. From this point of view, Tittle's Jesus after Nineteen Centuries is worthy of more than passing comment. What a subject- the meaning of Jesus and the manifestation of His power in the world to-day! Proceeding from the glorious truth "Jesus the same yesterday and to-day and forever," what cannot be said of the power of the Gospel as manifested in the …
