It was the first sizeable gathering of such a nature since the recent restructuring of the Lutheran World Federation at its Evian Assembly in 1970. That it was held in Asia was also noteworthy.

From June 6 to 12, 1971, the LWF Executive meeting occurred in Oslo. It was also the first enlarged meeting (more than 100 participants) of the top governing body of …

The Meaning Of Advent: Implications For Preaching, Frank C. Senn Nov 1971

The Meaning Of Advent: Implications For Preaching, Frank C. Senn

Concordia Theological Monthly

If we confess that the Holy Spirit, at work in the church at all times and in all places, in some sense inspired the development of a liturgical calendar and a pericopal system for the expansion of the Mystery, the edification of the faithful, and the amplification of preaching possibilities, then we must also confess that the Spirit could effect changes in the meaning of the various feasts and liturgical seasons with the passage of time and with shifts in the expression of piety. The Holy Spirit did not retire in the fourth century any more than he did after …

Thinking And Feeling In Education, Robert L. Conrad Jul 1971

Thinking And Feeling In Education, Robert L. Conrad

Concordia Theological Monthly

One of the troubles with teachers in the church and in public education is that they are adults. They do not think and imagine like children, but they take the results of adult thought and expect children to handle them. At the same time, their own education has led them to be suspicious of feelings and imagination, so that they ignore the feelings of children or try to get them to control their feelings and imagination with rational thought. Both of these tendencies have been challenged by recent studies.

Mission: Life, John S. Damm Jul 1971

Mission: Life, John S. Damm

Concordia Theological Monthly

It has become almost a truism to say that we are currently living in a time of crisis. The word "crisis" is now rather easily applied to a wide range of social, economic, political, educational, environmental, and technological phenomena that make up much of the context of contemporary life. This pervasive sense of crisis certainly has not left untouched the realm of Christian education.

Theology-Philosophy-Poetry: Toward A Synopsis, Erwin L. Lueker Jul 1971

Theology-Philosophy-Poetry: Toward A Synopsis, Erwin L. Lueker

Concordia Theological Monthly

From his background as professor of systematic theology, as well as that of his deep interest in philosophy and poetry and his writing in these fields over many years, the author sketches his impressions of the nature of the relationship between theology, philosophy, and poetry and indicates the current tendency toward a synopsis. The relationship between literature (especially poetry) and philosophy and theology is receiving increasing attention from scholars in all three areas. It is the author's conviction that the sensitivity of poets often makes them pioneers in recognizing new situations and impending changes and that some of the outstanding …

Psalm 130 serves as the basis for this exhortation to the church to edify one another in the hope of the Gospel, whose word of promise alone establishes our election, our eschatology, and our ethos. The author places liberal theology and form criticism into proper historical perspective and suggests ways for the church, especially his own synod, to turn contemporary turmoil into blessing.
