The origins of the synagog are lost in the obscurity of the past. There seem to be adequate reasons for believing that this religious institution did not exist in pre-Exilic times. Whether, however, the synagog came into being during the dark years of the Babylonian Captivity, or whether it dates back only to the early centuries after the return of the Jews to Palestine, is a matter of uncertainty.
