Austin Farrer, the hundredth anniversary of whose birth is celebrated this year, has been described as the greatest Anglican thinker of his generation. He was a philosophical theologian and biblical scholar, as well as a noted preacher and pastoral writer. He published extensively in all these areas. This review article provides a systematic introduction to the theology of Farrer's published sermons, focusing on his anthropology, Christology, ecclesiology, and eschatology. Reframing The Fields, Robert Masson Mar 2004

Reframing The Fields, Robert Masson

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The conception of metaphoric process elaborated by Mary Gerhart and Allan Russell illuminates a key mechanism often involved in the most significant advances in science and religion. Attention to this conceptual device provides a productive way to reframe the relationships and dialogues between the fields. The theory has compelling implications for reframing the understanding of theology and its task.

The Metaphysics Of The Sublime: Old Wine, New Wineskin?, Philip J. Rossi Jan 2004

The Metaphysics Of The Sublime: Old Wine, New Wineskin?, Philip J. Rossi

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

John Milbank’s and Phillip Blond’s narratives of modernity’s descent to nihilism identify the “metaphysics of the sublime” as a feature of modernity, assimilated from Kant’s critical project, that is particularly problematic for the robust post-modern Christian theology proposed in Radical Orthodoxy. This essay argues that the sublime is not the concept most fundamental to their account of Kant’s role in modernity. Far more important is the “phenomenon/noumenon” distinction, which Milbank and Blond read as a “two-world” distinction—an understanding that, despite a long history in Kant interpretation, is not Kant’s. It is less important, however, that constructive dialogue between Radical Orthodoxy …

Celestial Choirmaster: The Liturgical Role Of Enoch-Metatron In 2 Enoch And Merkabah Tradition, Andrei Orlov Jan 2004

Celestial Choirmaster: The Liturgical Role Of Enoch-Metatron In 2 Enoch And Merkabah Tradition, Andrei Orlov

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

This article investigates the roots of Enoch-Metatron’s liturgical office of celestial choirmaster which plays a prominent role in the Merkabah tradition. Although references to this office of the exalted patriarch are absent in 1 Enoch, Jubilees, Genesis Apocryphon, and the Book of Giants, this article argues that the roots of Enoch-Metatron’s liturgical imagery can be traced to the Second Temple Enochic lore, namely to 2 Enoch, the Jewish apocalypse, apparently written in the first century CE. This article investigates a tradition found in 2 Enoch 18 where the translated patriarch encourages the celestial Watchers to …
