"Terrorism" is a term that cannot be given a stable defintion. Or rather, it can, but to do so forstalls any attempt to examine the major feature of its relation to television in the contemporary world. As the central public arena for organising ways of picturing and talking about social and political life, TV plays a pivotal role in the contest between competing defintions, accounts and explanations of terrorism. Which term is used in any particular context is inextricably tied to judgemements about the legitimacy of the action in question and of the political system against which it is directed. …

Bathsheba's actions in 2 Sam. 11.2-4 identify crucial aspects of her character. Past commentators interpret these words in connection with menstrual purification, stressing the certain paternity of David's adulterine child. This article demonstrates that the participles rōheset and mitqaddesšet and the noun mittum'ātāh do not denote menstrual cleansing. Bathsheba's washing is an innocent bath. She is the only individual human to self-sanctify, placing her in the company of the Israelite deity. The syntax of the verse necessitates that her action of self-sanctifying occurs simultaneously as David lies with her. The three focal terms highlight the important legitimacy of Bathsheba before …

Prophets, Priests, And Kings: John Milton And The Reformation Of Rights And Liberties In England, John Witte Jr.

In this Article, I focus on the development of rights talk in the pre-Enlightenment Protestant tradition. More particularly, I show how early modem Calvinists-those Protestants inspired by the teachings of Genevan reformer John Calvin (1509-1564)-developed a theory of fundamental rights as part and product of a broader constitutional theory of resistance and military revolt against tyranny. With unlimited space, I would document how various Calvinist groups from 1550 to 1700 helped to define and defend each and every one of the rights that would later appear in the American Bill of Rights and how these Calvinists condoned armed revolution to …

Dhimmitude And Disarmament, David B. Kopel
David B Kopel
Under shari'a law, non-Muslims, known as dhimmi, have been forbidden to possess arms, and to defend themselves from attacks by Muslims. The disarmament is one aspect of the pervasive civil inferiority of non-Muslims, a status known as dhimmitude. This Essay examines the historical effects of the shari'a disarmament, based on three books by Bat Ye'or, the world's leading scholar of dhimmitude. As Ye'or details, the disarmament had catastrophic consequences, extending far beyond the direct loss of the dhimmi's ability to defend themselves. The essay concludes by observing how pretend gun-free zones on college campuses turn the adults there into 21st …

The 1919 Bible Conference And Its Significance For Seventh-Day Adventist History And Theology, Michael W. Campbell
The 1919 Bible Conference And Its Significance For Seventh-Day Adventist History And Theology, Michael W. Campbell
Dissertations
The Topic
The 1919 Bible Conference was held immediately after World War I during a heightened interest in the apocalyptic and soon after the death of Ellen White. Patterned after the Fundamentalist prophetic conferences of 1918 and 1919, it was arguably the first “scholarly” conference held by Seventh-day Adventists. During a theologically turbulent time, Adventists found the emerging Fundamentalist movement attractive for its biblicist theology, its opposition to modernism and evolution, and the apparent popular appeal of its prophetic conferences.
The Purpose
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the significance of the 1919 Bible Conference for Seventh-day Adventist …

Vincentian Education: A Survey Of Its History, John E. Rybolt
Vincentian Education: A Survey Of Its History, John E. Rybolt
John E Rybolt
St. Vincent de Paul did not specifically include works of education among the purposes of the Congregation of the Mission. Nevertheless he worked in many ways to foster the education of people and priests. His confreres continued this commitment to seminaries and other schools, particularly in overseas missions. Their quality was highly regarded. A review of Vincentian universities follows, together with an assessment of changes after the Second Vatican Council. These helped the Congregation to focus on St. Vincent's goal of service of the poor.

Two Unpublished Texts Concerning The Distribution Of The Vincentian Common Rules, 1658, John E. Rybolt
John E Rybolt
St. Vincent de Paul distributed the Common Rules for the Congregation of the Mission in 1658: in Latin for the priests, and in French for the others. Two brief unpublished texts, one in Italian and the other in Spanish, are from eyewitnesses to these events. These texts are transcribed, translated, and explained.

The Primitive Common Rules Of The Congregation Of The Mission, John E. Rybolt
John E Rybolt
The earliest Common Rules of the Congregation of the Mission, written by St. Vincent de Paul, have long been unrecognized. They are here published for the first time, in French and English, together with an explanation. These primitive rules are compared with the published rules of 1658.
