Prophecy And Porneia In Shenoute's Letters: The Rhetoric Of Sexuality In A Late Antique Egyptian Monastery, Caroline T. Schroeder

The writer examines the apparently ubiquitous sexual references in the first surviving letters of Shenoute. Shenoute's references to sexuality constitute one aspect of his self-representation as his community's prophet. His textual performance as a prophet in these texts indicates that his sexual rhetoric served not only to condemn sexual activity among ascetics but also to help construct a relationship between God and the monastic community that is based on the relationship between God and the people in the Christian Old Testament. Although relatively few readers today may have heard of Sir Thomas Browne (1605–1682), the works of this essayist, doctor, and amateur scientist cast long literary shadows. Among those influenced or inspired by Browne are Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Herman Melville, Virginia Woolf, Jorge Luis Borges, and W. G. Sebald. The admiration of later generations has to do in part with Browne’s style, for he is widely regarded as one of the finest prose writers in the English language. Rabbi Frank was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1932 and grew up in Houston, Texas. He graduated from San Jacinto Senior High in 1951 and from Brandeis University in 1955. He attended Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio, a reformed seminary, and was ordained a rabbi in 1960. In 1985, he earned a Doctor of Hebrew Letters.

Rabbi Frank first came to La Salle in 1964 or 1965 to instruct a course in Judaism. At the time, he was a pulpit rabbi at Beth Or. He remained at La Salle until 1982. He helped …
