Joseph Smith And The Book Of Mormon
Joseph Smith And The Book Of Mormon
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Increasingly, questions are being asked about how the Book of Mormon came to be. Few of these questions are new, for each generation must confront the challenging presence of the Book of Mormon for itself, the same as have the generations before us. In this light, it may be of interest for us to reread the five-part series from the 1959 Improvement Era written by Hugh Nibley, entitled "Mixed Voices." For the first time, these five articles are now available as a set.

This long popular book examines the Book of Mormon in light of the discoveries at Qumran, Nag-Hammadi, and throughout the ancient world. Enoch The Prophet
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
A major event last month was the publication of Hugh Nibley's Enoch the Prophet. Enoch's importance in the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha is certainly equaled or surpassed by his central role in the Book of Moses in the Pearl of Great Price. He is "the colossus that bestrides the Apocrypha as no other," writes Professor Nibley.

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
F.A.R.M.S. has frequently been asked to recommend books that people might read to learn more about the world of Lehi, the ancient source of much of the Book of Mormon. Beside the classic works by Hugh Nibley, Lehi in the Desert, An Approach to the Book of Mormon, and Since Cumorah, a very valuable book is by Father Roland de Vaux, Ancient Israel, in two volumes (McGraw Hill). Although slightly dated, the book remains extremely insightful, generally readable and reliable, and conveniently available in paperback.

Colophons In The Book Of Mormon
Colophons In The Book Of Mormon
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
At the start of 1 Nephi a heading, not marked with verse numbers, begins, "An account of Lehi and his wife Sariah, and his four sons" and ends, "I, Nephi, wrote this record." Dozens of these editorial entries or colophons (a form well known in nonscriptural documents from antiquity, as Nibley pointed out years ago) are found in the Book of Mormon. Together they instruct us about how the volume as we have it was assembled. The fact that these colophons have been handled differently in modem translations and printings obscures their nature.

The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal" (1 Corinthians 13:1). Since then, the terms "tinkling cymbals" and "sounding brass" have often been used to signify words of emptiness and confusion, an apt description of most writings critical of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. In Tinkling Cymbals and Sounding Brass: The Art of Telling Tales about Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, volume 11 of the Collected Works of Hugh Nibley, Brother Nibley brings his …
