Latter-Day Saint Scandinavian Migration Through Hull, England, 1852-1894, Fred E. Woods, Nicholas J. Evans Oct 2002

Latter-Day Saint Scandinavian Migration Through Hull, England, 1852-1894, Fred E. Woods, Nicholas J. Evans

BYU Studies Quarterly

Nearly one hundred thousand Latter-day Saints made the journey across the Atlantic during the nineteenth century. Both contemporary commentators and Mormon historians alike have described these ocean crossings extensively. Yet the journey from Liverpool to America was but one segment in the much longer gathering process for over twenty-four thousand Scandinavian Mormons who migrated to Utah during this period. Scandinavians represented the second-largest ethnic group of Saints gathering to Zion between 1852 and 1894. During these years, nearly two hundred vessels carrying Latter-day Saints (fig. 1) left Scandinavia bound for Hull, an important port on the east coast of England. …

As Church membership grew to nearly three million in the early 1970s, the Church faced the challenges of extending contact between General Authorities in Utah and many members who lived far from Church headquarters. While some members in the western United States could tune in to radio or television broadcasts of general conference, hundreds of thousands of Church members worldwide did not have access to the broadcasts.

The Cultural Impact Of Mormon Missionaries On Taiwan, Richard B. Stamps

BYU Studies Quarterly

I grew up in a multi-ethnic neighborhood in the San Francisco Bay Area, so from a very early age I was aware of China and things Chinese. In 1961 at Modesto Junior College, I met two international students from Hong Kong and was fascinated by their culture. When I heard a young man from our stake speak about his mission in Hong Kong, I said to myself, "That's where I would like to go!" When I applied for a mission, I was interviewed by a General Authority, who asked, "Would you be willing to serve overseas and learn a foreign …

Imparting One To Another: The Role Of Humility, Charity, And Consecration Within An Artistic Community, Tanya Rizzuti

BYU Studies Quarterly

A few weeks ago, there was a yard sale down the street from my mother's house. I struck up a conversation with the woman running the sale and discovered she was an artist, so I asked to see her work. The two pieces she showed me, both paintings on stone, were of great beauty. The artist spoke of her work and her creation process with a confidence that made me take a second look at her, a talented person who like millions of others around the world will probably never be widely known. She is a barmaid. When the woman …

And ye shall build it on the place where you have contemplated building it, for that is the spot which I have chosen for you to build it. If ye labor with all your might, I will consecrate that spot that it shall be made holy.

Photographs Of Joseph F. Smith And The Laie Plantation, Hawaii, 1899, Brian William Sokolowsky

BYU Studies Quarterly

On January 7, 1899, Joseph F. Smith, then a Counselor to Church President Lorenzo Snow, left Salt Lake City to visit the Church's plantation in Laie, Hawaii. The main purpose for this trip to Hawaii was to benefit the health of President Smith's wife Sarah Ellen Richards Smith, who had just passed through a "very severe illness." They were accompanied by two of his daughters, Minerva and Alice. President Smith's "loyal friend and former missionary companion" Albert W. Davis and Edna Davis, Albert Davis's daughter, were also on the trip. They first went by train to San Francisco and on …

“Behold The Condescension Of God” A Scriptural Perspective On Three Nativity Scenes, Doris R. Dant, Richard G. Oman Jul 2002

“Behold The Condescension Of God” A Scriptural Perspective On Three Nativity Scenes, Doris R. Dant, Richard G. Oman

BYU Studies Quarterly

In the midst of the Christmas season's commercialization, frenzied preparations, and parties, families worldwide set aside time to arrange a nativity scene on a mantelpiece or table. More than any other traditional Christmas object, these nativity sets bid us heed the message of Christ's birth. What the nativities specifically say differs with the endless variations played out by their creators and those who arrange the scenes, but certain scriptural themes are common. To show how some of these themes are presented by nativity scenes, this article will analyze three world-class nativities created by Latter-day Saint Gerd Sjökvist, Harrison Begay Jr., …

Katharine Smith Salisbury's Recollections Of Joseph's Meetings With Moroni, Kyle R. Walker Jul 2002

Katharine Smith Salisbury's Recollections Of Joseph's Meetings With Moroni, Kyle R. Walker

BYU Studies Quarterly

Katharine Smith Salisbury was the last surviving member of the Joseph Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith family and the only member of that family to witness the dawning of a new century. Because she was a member of the first family of the Restoration, Katharine, like her mother, was frequently sought out by converts, missionaries, and reporters for her recollections of these early events. Such visitors reported that she was a willing and able conversationalist on matters pertaining to her family and was quick to share her testimony of the truth of the work they helped to establish. Her early …

Which Are The Most Important Mormon Books?, Arnold K. Garr Jul 2002

Which Are The Most Important Mormon Books?, Arnold K. Garr

BYU Studies Quarterly

The very abundance of books in our days—a stupefying and terrifying abundance—has made it more important to know how to choose," observed historian James Bryce. "The first piece of advice I will venture to give you is this," he added. "Read only the best books.... Let not an hour... be wasted on third-rate or second-rate stuff if first-rate stuff can be had." This wise counsel is in harmony with the scriptural injunction "seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom" (D&C 88:118). This marvelous passage of scripture is exhilarating but leaves one to wonder, which are the best …

A Mysterious Image: Brigham Young With An Unknown Wife, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel, Robert F. Schwartz Jul 2002

A Mysterious Image: Brigham Young With An Unknown Wife, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel, Robert F. Schwartz

BYU Studies Quarterly

Of the hundreds of images of Brigham Young, until recently only two were known that show Brigham posing with one of his wives. While rumors of a third such images have existed for some time, no one could find a copy of it until this year. What we found was a photograph of the original daguerreotype (fig. 1); the original itself, printed on a small coper plate, is still missing. This rumored image was mysterious not only because it had disappeared but also because the wife's face on the daguerreotype had been completely obliterated. Unanswered questions regarding its damage make …

The Seduction Of Our Gifts, Pat Debenham Jul 2002

The Seduction Of Our Gifts, Pat Debenham

BYU Studies Quarterly

Some time ago, I and other faculty members of the BYU Dance Department discussed our concern about the future of our students, particularly those in music dance theatre. These are highly skilled young people who can and should, by virtue of their technical and spiritual training, be lights unto the world. Many succeed professionally or semiprofessionally. We are excited for them. Many, however, far too many, do not fare as well spiritually. They are seduced—drawn away from things that are essential—not only by the world, but by the very gifts that take them into the world, the artistic gifts that …

Latter-Day Saint Writings On Christ And The New Testament—2002 Supplement, Byu Studies Jul 2002

Latter-Day Saint Writings On Christ And The New Testament—2002 Supplement, Byu Studies

BYU Studies Quarterly

In the longstanding tradition of bibliographic publications generated by BYU Studies, the following bibliography lists the books and articles on the New Testament and early Christianity published by Latter-day Saint authors or in Latter-day Saint publications, mainly from 1994 to 2002. This compilation was assembled by Nicolas W. Thompson and Victoria F. Johnson under the mentoring of John W. Welch, assisted by Anastasia M. Sutherland, Aaron C. Cummings, Maurianne Dunn, and Kelli Skinner. This 2002 supplement follows guidelines similar to those set forth in the preface of the previous New Testament bibliography published by Welch and Daniel B. McKinlay …

Accommodating The Saints At General Conference, Paul H. Peterson Apr 2002

Accommodating The Saints At General Conference, Paul H. Peterson

BYU Studies Quarterly

"Our buildings are very commodious," Elder Joseph W. McMurrin of the Quorum of Seventy told assembled Saints at an outdoor general conference meeting, "but entirely too small to accommodate the people who desire to hear the word of God. Even in this overflow meeting," he added, "notwithstanding the chilliness of the weather this morning, the people are anxious to come and hearken to the counsels that may be imparted."
