Contributions Of The Confessions To A Lutheran Philosophy Of Education, John Mager Jun 1960

Contributions Of The Confessions To A Lutheran Philosophy Of Education, John Mager

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Because of the central place which the Confessions give to the doctrine of justification we feel that we can do nothing less than make this doctrine the unifying principle in this thesis. We do so for this reason that the unifying principle or a Lutheran philosophy of education cannot be much diverse from the material principle of its theology. If theology is the basis or the foundation upon which the superstructure of a Lutheran philosophy of education can be built up, then the two and their unifying principles are more closely related than we might assume.

Preaching For The Church (Review), Arthur C. Repp, George W. Hoyer Feb 1960

Preaching For The Church (Review), Arthur C. Repp, George W. Hoyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In spite of their preoccupation with preaching most pastors are not particularly interested in books about preaching. Sermon books are more promising. They can offer valuable ideas, give a few practical hints now and then, present a stimulating model, and not infrequently suggest an outline to the harried pastor. But a book on homiletics at best seems to promise a review of those principles which every seminary graduate ought to know. If he no longer remembers them, they probably were not very helpful anyway. After all, one learns to preach by preaching.

Some Representative Contemporary Concepts Of The Manifestation Of God In History And Creation, Herman Otten Jun 1958

Some Representative Contemporary Concepts Of The Manifestation Of God In History And Creation, Herman Otten

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis does not pretend to be an exhaustive study of the entire issue of God’s manifestations and natural theo1ogy. Few Missouri Synod Lutherans have concerned themselves with the problem. Jaroslav Pelikan refers to the “problem of natural theology" in his From Luther to Kierkegaard. He believes that Kant has rendered a great service to Lutheran theology by ridding it of Aristotelianism.

Vespers, Its History And Theology, Thomas N. Green Jun 1957

Vespers, Its History And Theology, Thomas N. Green

Bachelor of Divinity

When the Church of Christ worships it is inevitable that the worshipers use Forms, or Rites, or Orders, for only in this way does the worship become meaningful to all. One of the Orders which the Church Catholic has used for centuries is Vespers. This Order is being used more and more in the Lutheran Church today, and hence it is necessary to make a careful study of the Form.

The thesis which follows takes up just these problems, namely, the history and theology or the Order or Vespers.

Pastoral Psychology, C. A. Behnke Apr 1948

Pastoral Psychology, C. A. Behnke

Concordia Theological Monthly

Writers on pastoral theology, such as our own Dr. Walther, regarded such ability as vital. He describes it, however, not only as "a God-given, practical aptitude of the soul," but also as one that is "acquired by certain means." (Fritz, Pastoral Theology, p. 1.) He, therefore, suggests that a theological student visit hospitals, in order to become better acquainted with the inner life of the sick and to master innate revulsion against disagreeable smells and sights.

The Lord's Prayer, The Pastor's Prayer, G. H. Smukal Jul 1945

The Lord's Prayer, The Pastor's Prayer, G. H. Smukal

Concordia Theological Monthly

The pastor prays to the Father: "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven." His privilege and duty is to understand the meaning of this petition and to convey it to his congregation. If he fails in this, he is incompetent; if he is incompetent, he should either acquire knowledge or return the shepherd's staff to Jesus. The knowledge of God's will is indispensable to faith and life. To attain this sufficiency, the faithful pastor strives earnestly to ascertain the meaning of this petition. That pastor was the devil's servant who said to an afflicted parishioner: "Don't …

The Principium Cognoscendi In Theology, W. H. Dau Aug 1942

The Principium Cognoscendi In Theology, W. H. Dau

Concordia Theological Monthly

The subject submitted for our consideration this morning presents a somewhat forbidding aspect. "The Principium Cognoscendi in Theology" - that sounds like a rather abstruse, metaphysical proposition. I hasten, therefore to assure you that this subject has a definite practical bearing on every part of the work which we are doing and preparing to do as preachers, ministers, pastors, missionaries in the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is to enable us to determine, in regard to ourselves and others, when a person is really a theologian in the estimation of Lutherans and when he is turning out genuinely …

The Import And Content Of Luther's Exegetical Lectures On The Epistle To The Hebrews, Walter E. Buzin Feb 1938

The Import And Content Of Luther's Exegetical Lectures On The Epistle To The Hebrews, Walter E. Buzin

Concordia Theological Monthly

It has been abundantly proved that, when Luther nailed the famous Ninety-five Theses to the door of the Castle Church In Wittenberg, he had no thought of disrupting the Church. The tenor of the theses shows very clearly that he had in mind only to uphold the honor and the integrity of the Church he loved and to keep his fellow human beings from being defrauded financially as well as spiritually. His theses likewise show that he wanted to be and remain a faithful subject of the Pontiff at Rome. He took for granted that the Pope would heartily disapprove …

The Shifting Sands Of Science, Th. Engelder Jul 1932

The Shifting Sands Of Science, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

Men are colling upon the Christian Church with increasing insistence that it adjust its teachings to the findings of science. The Western Christian Advocate of December 22, 1027, declared: "New discoveries have necessitated new statements of our faith. Our views of the Bible, our ideas as to God's relationship to the world, have got to be reconstructed. . . . The heterodoxies of one day have become the orthodoxies of the next." w. K. Wright, in A. Student’s Philosophy of Religion, demands that he, the student, draw no conclusions in conflict with the dicta of present-day mental and physical science. …

The Nature and Constitution of Sacred Theology.

Theology and Academic Freedom.

Modern rationalistic theology demands that the official teachers of the Church, both in the pulpit and in the lecture chair, should be invested with full academic freedom. That is to say, they should be allowed to assert their subjective opinions without any restrictions whatsoever; oven Holy Scripture must not be forced upon them as the only source and standard of the faith which they are to inculcate.

The Nature and Constitution of Sacred Theology.

The Purpose of Christian Theology

In the performance of his sacred functions the Christian theologian must at all times conscientiously keep in mind the true objective of his theological activity. The purpose of sacred theology, so far as it regards lost and perishing mankind, is not the spread of culture nor the establishment of civic righteousness on earth nor the satisfaction of the intellectual craving of the human mind nor the enrichment of human knowledge, but the eternal salvation of sinners.
